    Default Army Surplus Jacket Advice

I am looking for an army surplus jacket to make into a field coat, just lower cartridge pockets and no hood, no shoulder tabs etc, very much like a barbour type style, but camo and cotton!

    Two questions,

First, which jacket would be a mid/heavy weight cotton, the rip stop one seems abit light! the style however would be perfect

Second, I am a medium, how does the sizing work out, I bought a 180/96 rip stop and it was huge, could have had a party in it!!

Plus I am hoping to get a fleabay deal under £20 so I dont want a over priced branded job! as much as I would like one, I cant afford it!

    Thanks in advance folks

The 95 pattern (ripstop) is very light, but very hard wearing. The latest one has a hood and is also light, but not ripstop.

Reading your required specs, a 90 pattern or 68 patt would suit. They will all have epilettes but these could be removed. Most surplus stores will stock them, though they are getting harder to find.

In terms of sizing, the first number is height, second the chest both in cm so you need to measure yourself up in cm and try for a close match. All smocks have draw chords so can be pulled in a bit if needs be.
Have a look at the para smock too, knitted cuffs, collar, pop stud pockets and heavyweight cotton.

Teaching should be about carrot and stick. That way, If the carrot isn't reward enough you still have a big stick....

This is the thing, I am 180/96 and the jacket is massive!! I was surprised by how mig it actually is!!

Is the para smock hood detachable?

Mod sizing can vary from item to item. The 95 field jacket was designed to be worn over the t-shirt, lightweight jacket ( shirt), fleece and gore-tex liner so will fit a person of 180/96 wearing all of the items mentioned. You may need to ask the seller for the actual garment sizes, then measure them up against an item that fits you well.

Para smocks can take the combat hood but don't have them fitted as standard.

If you can wait until MTP replaces all dpm, all the surplus stores will be flooded with buckshee jackets and kit no longer in use. Am a xl, keeping one smock yet donating the other to a fellow outdoor person. The trousers will get dyed for work. Not too far away if you can wait a week for a free jacket.
