    Default Going commando....

....socks. I'm a massive fan of HJ Commando socks - has anyone any contenders for longevity/comfort/cost?

Issue socks irritate me, so I went for some by perilla, won't buy anything else now.

expensive = maybe, comfortable = absolutely(and like nothing else I have worn), hardwearing = very.

I've used ThorLo for years, very comfy and very hard wearing (the cushioned hiking ones).

i use Harkilla socks for normal three season trecking as they are fantatically comfortable. For winter the old Woolpower merino arctic socks come out to play.

1000 mile socks. Hugely popular with the participants of the Nijmegen marches. http://www.survivalaids.com/order1.php?pg=638

For bang for the buck, I don't think Aldi's trekking socks can be beaten.

They do 2 good kinds; a right and left pair with ergonomic pads and some Tactel lined(same as 1000 mile socks) socks which are my main users now. The Bridgedales, Trek-lites and various other expensive socks get left at home for the £2.50/pair Aldi specials

I like Smartwool, Bridgedale and the rest for hiking, but for workaday boot socks I've been getting these Dutch ones from Endicotts for a while - I like them a lot, much better than the standard 'combat' type (e.g. HL) ones I was buying there previously - a bit more expensive, but the sizing is better, and I find them more comfortable and they last longer - after some wear and washing they almost start to felt up. If you like 'combat'-type socks (with all they entail), I'd recommend trying out a pair:

Many thanks for all the recommendations. There's nothing worse than taking your socks off at the end of the day and finding most of the sock fibres stuck around your toes. My mate calls it 'toe fudge', something I never get with HJ's.

Same here, new ones in the winter, older ones that have thinned down a bit in the summer. I also wear Falke socks which are very good. Glyn

Looked at Aldi today but they only had fishing socks. Lidl didn't have any trangia rip offs either. Dissappointing tour of the quality shops of Morecambe!

I am lucky...I love the issue sock. I think they're brilliant and work better in a hot environment than the issue hot weather sock. I have spent a bit of money on socks over the years but always returned to the issue one.

I must be a bit of an odd one, the issue ribbed socks never seem to work that well for me. I find they are either too hot and sweaty in summer, or just not warm enough for winter use. Plus the artificial fibres seemed to rub the heel raw when combined with the heel counter of issue boots - not a problem anymore though.

Many thanks for putting me on to these. I ordered a couple of pairs and have worn them extensively ever since. They are superbly comfortable and will now move up to the No.1 slot in the preferred sock chart. Brilliant.
