Lannyman, what do you mean when you talk about 'buffing up' grass?
    Not polishing it, surely?

I suppose you could you a small bundle of wood shavings, even cattail down and in the middle of the bundle use a small sheet of char cloth.

What is a good combination for an ember as delicate as a hand drill one ?
    Many thanks
    Hog.
The ember shouldn't really be any more fragile than a char cloth one so this might be of some help:

Might not as well mind you!

errrrrrrm, was that a real question????not sure because of the smiley, if it was its easy, just grab some grass in your hands grabbing the ends of the stalks, kind or push and rub them together at the same time, it does not really matter how you do it really, but what your after is breaking the strands of the stalks up so they are thinner and more "fluffy" to catch a spark or ember, the "fluffy" fibers hold more air are finer so burn more easily, the friction also causes heat which helps get rid of any moisture, this again makes it easyer to light....

Okay, some Birch bark and some jute twine teased out a bit of cotton wool mostly to keep everything together.

Yes Lanny, it was a genuine question, and many thank for the patient reply!
The smiley was an 'embarrassed' one, cos I thought it was kind of a daft question...
