I know these smocks are very popular with many people here. My question is what degree of water repellency can they offer?

To protect yourself, you must protect everything that is not yourself.
as they come, bugger all. I have waxed mine now and its still not 100% due to the wide weave
is your the head over one or full button, the head over one has a loose weave i find though ive had okay success with one ive waxed, but i do find the full button ones although lighter material do have a tighter weave ive been out in snow/sleet with my waxed one of these with a swanni and t-shirt underneath and came back to find t-shirt still dry.
It is a snow smock. It is not supposed to have any water repellency.

I had go with some Nikwax on mine and its improved it from stock but not that much. When I did the Nikwax I just line dried it as didn't have a tumble dryer at the time and I have heard that can make a bit of difference so going to try it again.

i have worn mine out in the rain for several hours without any treatment and been bone dry underneath. next step will be getting some greenland wax on it for a re-test
I bought a couple of these due to what I'd heard about them, and for very little money they were worth it! I dyed mine (not very well) green but they are tough and work well as a bushcrafting jacket. They have big bellows pockets that can hold an awful lot of stuff. Hood is large and protects from the elements. My only gripe was the cuffs being a very tight fit which is strange in comparison to the rest of the loose fit.
Now... It is not fully waterproof, HOWEVER... As it gets wet in a shower, the threads expand limiting further ingress of water giving more protection. So you will get damp to start with but it also becomes more windproof and therefore holds in the warmth from your body.
My top had a real test a few weeks back in the heavy rain... I was on a bushcraft course with my students for a few days. It was all I wore (in comfort) as a tip, with a regatta base-layer fleece underneath. No waterproofing was used... That will be my next move to see what difference that may make. To be honest it was great just the way it was (except for the cuffs which may soon be modded).
Hope this mini-review helps???
