Thread: Swedish Snow Smock

    Default Swedish Snow Smock

I know these smocks are very popular with many people here. My question is what degree of water repellency can they offer?

as they come, bugger all. I have waxed mine now and its still not 100% due to the wide weave

It is a snow smock. It is not supposed to have any water repellency.

I know that (see title of OP). I asked the question because I remember reading on here that they do offer some water resistance. I think Hamish (Dreadhead) was impressed with his even without wax.

I had go with some Nikwax on mine and its improved it from stock but not that much. When I did the Nikwax I just line dried it as didn't have a tumble dryer at the time and I have heard that can make a bit of difference so going to try it again.

I bought a couple of these due to what I'd heard about them, and for very little money they were worth it! I dyed mine (not very well) green but they are tough and work well as a bushcrafting jacket. They have big bellows pockets that can hold an awful lot of stuff. Hood is large and protects from the elements. My only gripe was the cuffs being a very tight fit which is strange in comparison to the rest of the loose fit.
Now... It is not fully waterproof, HOWEVER... As it gets wet in a shower, the threads expand limiting further ingress of water giving more protection. So you will get damp to start with but it also becomes more windproof and therefore holds in the warmth from your body.
My top had a real test a few weeks back in the heavy rain... I was on a bushcraft course with my students for a few days. It was all I wore (in comfort) as a tip, with a regatta base-layer fleece underneath. No waterproofing was used... That will be my next move to see what difference that may make. To be honest it was great just the way it was (except for the cuffs which may soon be modded).
    Hope this mini-review helps???
