First Bow Drill Ember & Fire

No not me, ive lost count of how many ive made over the years ive been doing it, but having had my plans to go the the Sussex meet scuppered (again), the boys and i spent a bit of time out in the garden, where eldest tried to get his 1st bow drill ember, the good news he did it, not once but four times in the end and blew one to flame, not bad at 14 years old, im chuffed to bits for him.

Couple of pics of him in action, the hearth is Ivy, the Drill is Hazel, the bearing blocks used were a chunk of Ash and a drilled stone

Now all we need to do is practice and then practice some more, im over the moon for him, not easy to achieve fire by friction and to do it at 14 years old is quite an achievement and he is now part of an exclusive world wide club, i read somewhere a long while ago the percentage of the Planets population who can make fire by friction is considerably less than 5%, but that club got a new member today.

I tip my hat to him. Once you get it its a great feeling. My set was well used at the meet over the weekend. Jesus produced a bit of cord for my bow and we both were away making embers. Next is to cut a fresh set and get an ember and flame in the field, rather than a prepared set. We all like the new spot on N1, quiet and a bit over grown, yet you can still get a car close to drop stuff off. Shame there's no water on tap, but we can sort that next time.

Hugo was telling me about the new pitch today and how good it is, shame there is no stand pipe though, way i figure it is if everyone takes it in turns to go get some water from the nearest stand pipe, rather than leaving it to the normal few, who gather water, collect wood & water etc and if people take a reasonable sized water container or two with them, so we dont have to keep running backwards and forwards everytime the kettle is filled up then there is no problem

To be fair Darkhorse Dave kept us well topped up. If I can Make it, I've got a couple of very big containers that I can bring that will (hopefully) be enough to see us through the weekend. Will need a hand filling them and loading, might leave that till I get there to save on fuel. They must be 25lt barrels.
