is it worth finding somewhere local to bead blast it or just give it some with a brillo pad

Take it to an alloy wheels refurbisher and as them to use the blast gun on it, the one they use to take the paint etc from old alloys.
What you need doing, taking off a top coat and getting back to the alloy, is pretty much what they do all day long.
i think the amount of port i consumed with my associate might have been an influencing factor also
