    Default Sixteen and Unders Competition

I was going though my kit and working out what I do and do not use and was thinking of what to do with the kit I do not use anymore. Well I have decided to give something away, but all you adults have far to much kit and most have the money to get what you want so this is for the younger bushcrafters out there. So I have a Polish Army Tent (Lavuu) for someone to win.

    as seen here

To win the Lavuu some effort is required, below are a handful of challenges I would like to see the young bushcrafters attempt.

    Rules.
To enter you must be under 16 years old, for you parents out there feel free to get your kids to do the challenges but dont help them (if your kids do it then take photos of them doing the challenges)
    Get your parents permission
    Keep safe dont hurt yourself
Post a reply to this thread with photos of your attempts
You dont need to do all of these, do what you can
The BCUK members can judge the winner

So following Dave Canterbury The 5 C's of survivability the challenges are

    1. Cutting tool – Knifes, axes and saws are great tools, but you can still do a lot without a cutting tool, so make some kind of pot hanger without using a knife.
    2. Combustion device – Start a fire with any method you like, please do this in a safe place and show your prep, the lighting and the fire burning.
    3. Container – Boil some water in a container, non metal containers will get a bonus point.
    4. Cover – Make a 1 tree shelter, your choice of how you do it.
    5. Cordage – make atleast 3 inches of cordage

Good luck and hopefully within a 30 days we should have some challenges attempted.

    OK so I'm finished!
I thought that mabey I could kill 3 birds with 1 stone so I set about boiling water in a non metal pot over a fire I had myself hanging from a pot hanger made without using a cutting tool!
So I will start with the preparation of my non metal pot ( a 1.5 litre orange juice carton)

So I cut the top off with my knife and removed the screw top seal thing

Then I made a hole in both sides near the top and put in the screwy thing to one side, then I stole the screwy thing from another carton and put that in the other hole, now my pot had eylets

Then I went out to find some sticks to make my pot hanger/tripod from
After 5 minutes I had come across what I think was a fallen birch

It had some nice strait sticks coming off it, so I snapped them off and went home

When at home I went into the garden and unlaced my boots, this gave me some cordage to work with

Then I arranged the sticks and tied the 3 biggest together using a bootlace

I filled up my pot with some water from the water butt

Then I passed the other lace through the 2 eylets in my pot/carton

And suspended it from my tripod

That was my pot hanger DONE!

    Now to light the fire.
I chose to use my firesteel, cotton wool and some inner tube for this

    Then I chopped some kindling

Then I began to light my fire

    It was lit!
    Light a fire, DONE

then I put my pot over the top and began the long task of boiling the water

After that I raised the water a little

    Then I waited
    And waited
    And waited

But then I had to go in so I took some pictures of the water just about boiling

That was my first attempt at boiling water in a non metal container, DONE! I don't know if it will count as finished or not but I will keep trying.

So assuming I've stuck to the rules etc
    That's 1,2 and 3
    DONE :-)

I'll see if I can get my step son to have a go at this this weekend (he's only 11) and post the results.

Okay. As soon as I told my step son Josh (11) about this tonight he practically dragged me out so he could get started!

All of the effort, work and craft has been done by my step son the only guidance he has has is me watching him to make sure he doesn't hurt himself.

    Here goes his entry.

    1) we went to our local sport of woodland so he could tackle this part of the challenge. He saw a wood drift next to the river and scavenged some piece of wood.

Once he had his wood he decided to see if he could get it to sit together "like bear grylls does"

    2) next we went home and he was racking his little brain to try and figure out how to make the natural cordage. We went into the garden and noticed the creeper vines over growing our fence and wanted to use them.

Once he had cut it down he wanted to "roll" it in his own words together. I advised him to use all his skill of platting his sisters hair and this was the result.

All in all he platted about 8-10 inches which he then used to tie his tripod up.

    3) the next thing was boiling water. I admit I did have to give him some clues on this one (he's only 11 after all) but he got the idea fairly quickly. He wanted to cut down a carton to use as a pot (like Ben did) although the one he chose was metallic inside.

Once cut, he put holes in it and used some more vine to tie it onto his tripod.

    4) next was the fire. He wanted to use my fire steel so I allowed him to use my axe to cut some dry wood we had and he wanted to use tissue paper as tinder.

Then he put the tinder in the centre and took the fire steel to start trying to light the fire

    And the result

Then once he had it going we left it to see if it would boil. It started to rain and it really dampened down his fire but he did manage to get the tiny air bubbles to form in it which meant he was getting it to boiling.

    5) as for his shelter I will post what he made when we went out camping about a month or so ago. He made a simple lean to under some guidance and here it is.

I would like to add that he has really enjoyed doing this and having to use some of the things I have taught him to achieve these goals.
