Default How do you get around it??

Hi guys, firstly, let me point ou this isnt a thread for sympathy lol, its genuine question as to how you get around a problem like mine!!

3 weeks ago I had an operation to have an abcess removed on my lower back (top of the butt crack lol)
They have to leave it an open wound so that it granulates, which means daily trips to the nurse and the district nurse (bless them) at the weekends coming to my house!!

Its starting to drive me very slowly mad being stuck indoors off of work, all I seem to be doing is day dreaming of being outside and constantly looking kit, I am in the midst of planning a trip with Teepee to Scotland which is gonna be excellent ( I must be driving him mad with all my questions lol) so that keeps me amused for a while each day!!

Its tough cause at the m I cant really walk too far, even though the hole thats left is only a centimeter deep, its still very sore!!

Tele helps, but as you can imagine not much, Im lucky that my kids keep me amused but even then I cant do a lt for them!! Ruddy useless lol!!

So how do you guys satsfy your urge to be out there in the wilds, or camping or climbing mountains etc when you physically are not able??

Iv had troubles like this before when I had major open surgery on my abdomin, but for some reason I didnt have the massive urge just get a pack on and get out!!

So come on chaps and chapesses, how do you get around it??

    All the best

Know how you feel mate. I had an accident 9 years ago and have how developed issues that mean getting out walking a decent distance is a no no.

How do I get round it? Well apart from occasionally pushing myself to hard and ending up back on crutches, I take myself off to a bit of woodland, find myself a comfy spot and do something. Be it hang a hammock and sit and wittle. Practise a bit of firelighting or foraging, or jut sit and let nature come back to me. I'm lucky I've got a lot on my door step and a great bushcraft group local to me to go and hang out with. I'm fortunate that I'm useless at most things, but am also very stubborn. So practicing the same thing time and time again isn't a problem. Also I've got friends who keep helping me out by being so much better at things than me.

Not much help, but step back from where you are, look at what you like to do and find the compromise. Look at another aspect of what you like and learn/study that.

I no exactly how you feel, thankfully mine is temporary but bad enough!!
I would love to get out but round where I live there really is no woodland at all!! Especially within walking distance and not being able drive makes it impossable!!

Garden bushcrafting is the way forward lol

Sounds very interesting indeed John, does it have anything to do with leather work in it?
Where would I find this book mate??

I get out far less than I'd like. Like Decorum says, making stuff is a great way to feel in touch even if you're not. Currently, I struggle to find the time for even that!.

But if you give making stuff a try I'm sure you'll be knocking out pouches and sheaths in no time. If you want some leather and thread to have a go, drop me a PM.

Nothing wrong with garden bushcrafting ~ have you tried to ID each plant in your garden? How about trying to ID the different grasses in a lawn?

Most of us start out making stuff that their own grannies would have difficulty praising ~ and many won't admit to making complete botches in their early days (and sometimes latter days too :0 ).

That did make me look twice too, thinking, an ewing machine? You and I live so close jacko, I know what ya mean about the lack of woodland...

What about thinking along simplier lines! Tarp ties with elastic sections, make your own fatwood with pine and candle wax, hobo stove, billy can hanger. Not earth shaking but may scrach the itch?

Back yard bushcraft is a great thing to do. Once you are into something, your surroundings become less important. Having said that, I use to live in the middle of a city, and the garden would still be full of life, as are local parks.

My back yard has given me charcoal, the start of a try stick, several spoons (and a lot of kindling), hobo wood burning stove, Monkeyboy stove, crampball fires, birch bark fires, cotton wool and Vaseline fires, well the list oes on.

Whatever you do don't look at paracordist stuff on YouTube or you'll end up with shares in paracord.

not read any other posts but sounds like a pilonidal synus? iv had 4 operations for this in the past 2 years and been bedbound for most of that time and had just about all the drugs and surgeons you could get. the last op they cut out enough flesh you could fit two fists in the wound its nasty stuff so beleive me i know how you feel!

just got to adjust and find something to occupy your mind so you dont go crazy. iv spent 2 years mostly reading and the last year learning leatherwork (most of which i do in bed when i cant walk haha)

if you want to discuss anything about it with my experience just fire me a PM. feel like a damn expert on this after all this time

    The old Jeeps disease.

I had that too Hamish, hope its sorted it out this time. I know what its like.

They told me I need another op 2 years ago and gave me another load of horse tablet sized antibiotics to get it under control. On a trip out a few weeks later, I felt it starting to come back with a little soreness and sprayed it with Savlon Povidone Iodine spray.

It cured it overnight, so I carried on with 2 more sprays and then didn't even bother going back to the docs! 2 more minor recurrencies have also been sorted with it and I havent had it come back now at all for over a year If I'm out on a long trip, I now use it to prevent it in the first place. I don't know if this will help you or anybody else, but I assume it can't do much harm(unless you can't take iodine) as I believe its what the hospital uses.

Hey Steve, how about some sit-ups to pass the time?

(joke, dont do it mate and you can punch me for that one)

That's where we all start from. Nobody is born good at making stuff, you just keep trying until the stuff you make doesn't suck anymore.

I've been on a short rein lately for various reasons and making stuff or just pimping bits of kit has been keeping me sane.

I agree, don't get started o para cord stuff. I have para cord bracelets coming out of my ears. My dog has a glow in the dark paracord collar and a lead. All my rifles have paracord slings and my girlfriend has several different belt designs. It's a terrible affliction! :S

    I daydream a lot.....

Or (re)read my books about outdoorsubjects...
    Or rewatch my Attenborough-collection....
Or tinker around on little things or started small projects...

And if nothing else helps I still got householdchores to do and kids to keep off each others throats...

Hope you get well soon, sounds nasty. You too Hamish.

Watch documentaries/tutorials about bushcrafty stuff on Youtube. I find that helps inspire me, I admit I'm a bit of an armchair bushcrafter.

My fingers are actually itching to have a go at more carving, in particular, a woodspirit as seen here http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/content.php?r=421-my-take-on-a-woodspirit-carving-tutorial

Was it jeeps disease? paleionidal something? If so i feel for you had it several times my self but was lucky enough to get rid before operation time.
Get into craft stuff, woodwork, bowyery, leather work, whittling etc. If its bowyery you fancy a go at let me know.
Make sure your kit is all shiney for when you do get out and get some dates inked in to look forward too.

I read the same, it was to do with the rock hard wooden seats and to compound things a complete lack of suspension.
Either way a pain in the butt literally. Not pleasant and a little embarrassing so good to know there are others out there.
Starting to sound like a mens health site this lol

Thats what put me off the opp, the fact the doctor said "well it sometimes works, i would say about 6 out of 10"

If any of you two want to start bowyery get in touch.
