So I like gadgets. There, I said it. They are not essential to my enjoyment of being out doors, but can record and document my adventures. Offer guidance, safety and a means for SWMBO to nag me whilst out.

But my biggest issue is keeping the damn things powered. I've tried battery packs, windup chargers and solar chargers, but nothing has ever really done it for me. But having a hunt round on the interweb today and found this. Maybe the answer to my problems, maybe not (at that price), but thought I'd share with you fellow gadget head bushcrafters.

Looks interesting but far too expensive for me.

A very ingenious design but pricey. It's seems to be an item that is definately fit for purpose though.

I have been using one of these for a while http://www.amazon.co.uk/MiLi-Power-E.../dp/B003L056C8 and have found them to be quite good (no affiliation etc...)

The problem i find with the iphone in general, same as all smart phones, is they tend to suck power at an alarming rate.

Although it makes things a bit more long winded i tend to turn of thing like wifi, 3G and bluetooth so they dont constantly search for a connection and any other apps or programs running in the background and just turn them on when i need them.

I suppose it comes down to what your using the phone for whilst your out but as with most things videos, web browsing, games etc... will all run the phone down a lot quicker than it just being there waiting to make or receive a call and the odd photo.

    Cheers, Hamster
I dont understand your concern, we are in the woods with fire, an axe and a book to identify mushrooms ... what could possibly go wrong?

Very Gucci bit of kit. The only thing I don't like is the fact I'd need to pay for refills. 4 watt hours is less than 2 hours charge time. At 3 quid a puck it's gonna burn cash. Nice find though

If you really need it, why not just buy a spare battery and make sure both are fully charged before venturing out...?

2 batteries wouldnt be enough for me so some sort of backup is needed. My phone is my phone, map, entertainment system, book, reference library etc etc so i get through lots of power. Plus you cant change the battery on an iphone.

I could buy 6 spare batteries for my fully waterproof and shockproof android phone for the cost of the spare iphone battery linked by the OP... Sorry, didn't mean to divert the thread onto the usual Iphone/Android perpetual argument!

mm the fuel cell is fairly big ie battery size think once you set it going thats it burns till its done so you can charge and use while this is happening and it will store probably another fill in its 1500mAh internal battery.
But it dosnt read like you can turn the Fuel cell on and off once you get it going

then you have a spent cell that needs proper disposal

looks to be a large unit to carry

I would look for a Small solar unit that can take rechargeable std batteries and power a USB then carry a few extra sets of the battery's charged to use when the solar cant keep up then recharge then when you get home.

I bet its smaller lighter and cheaper than the Hydrogen fuel cell

Hey.. Nice bit of kit that, but as said, quite pricey for what you get.
I have been using the powertraveller extreme for a year and find it perfect for me. 9000mah battery, with a solar panel that charges the battery and any 5v device. Its weather proof, and keeps its charge for many months.

There is also the Biolite camp stove http://www.biolitestove.com/and cracking bit of kit, (looks) that just uses wood to create power for your devices, plus with the added benefit of being able to cook your food also. I will probably get one when when they are available.
