That is one fine looking Axe, I have a similar type which was gotten in a deal the Big Lebowski. Its still razor sharp Just recently cut down a tree in our back garden which had started to die. My Father in law was well impressed with the little Hatchet. Its very rare to have a compliment of him as he is very precise about every thing he does and it has to be right. Is that line just back from the edge the temper line or some form of lamination?

Yes 1080 high carbon & 1018 mild carbon, temper line a little bit like "hamon".
