Default The Dartmoor Jolly Boys Outing....

Hi there , i have organised a meet , starting on Sunday 13th May - Thursday 17th May at a secret Dartmoor location ,final details for those that don't know will be dealt with by way of PM , the numbers are limited to 10 , and i have already got 7 confirmed , so there are 3 spaces left if anyone wants to join in.

Its a beautiful site , with a fresh water river running alongside , mixed hard and softwood plantation , with plenty of space to hang or ground dwell , fantastic scenery beautiful walks etc .

We have organised transport to the site ,as it is a little way off the beaten track .

So i will list those planning on coming ,and remaining places are on a first come first served basis , there will be no charge , but as usual we will all chip in to a kitty as regards group meals etc (usally a fiver a head )

    Ivan...
    Savagebushcraft
    Paul Webster
    Skate (TBC)
    Bucephalas
    Redandshane (TBC)
    Dave53

Any questions please ask . I am of course aware of dates , affecting peoples particpation , work commitments etc , part of the reason for limited numbers. It is just something that was sucessful last year .

    Sorry Ivan,
I will have to miss this one as I am away in the Brecon Beacons walking/hammoking for a few days and then a Regimental reunion fo a few beers.
Hope you all have a great time and see you soon.

    Can't come cos I'm working.
I have to grind my way through three weeks* full-time** work*** everyyear and it clashes with this Jolly Outing!

    * well, it's almost 3 weeks apart form the Bank holiday
** it's almost full-time, except when I finish early of course
*** I'll be invigilating university exams, that's almost work, isn't it?

but, be fair, it is every year.

Hi everyone , so as not to clog the thread up with individaul replies (from me that is !) in response to those who have commented (sensible or not !)

I understand that , not giving enough warning of gatherings, that it is difficult for people to organise time out to attend some of the meets ,what with busy work and family commitments etc, but rest assured i am planning this to be the summer of our content ! So after much groundwork , i will be frequently posting meets etc, of varying sizes at different locations and hopefully some dates will suit , for all of the poor souls that have taken part before and new victims alike !

Just keep an eye on the South West Headings , for regular get togethers , because although i am biased they are always good fun (feel free to comment , if you have been along to one and found it dissapointing ) it's the only way i can get them right !

Anyone that has dates in mind , or wants me to sort something out for them , please contact me by PM , i will try my best to sort something out for you .

PM's inbound regards this meet .

    Ivan...

Unfortunately, the wives and work thing have mean't that two of our finest campers have had to decline, so there are currently 5 spaces available aboard the Dartmoor Express , so if any of you are at a loose end , show an interest on here first , and the rest will be sorted , as they say .

My dear Mr Newman , i know you live in the dark ages, but don't for one minute think distance is safety, thanks to wonderful 21st century technology ,you are much closer than you think ! So please be careful what you wish for , or i may well be forced to change your whole wardrobe to yellow! Now you didn't think everest was going to do that today , did you ?

Yellow is for when I'm relegated to car-park duty! Tabard is still in my boot.

Rick , you are a very naughty boy , you promised that you wouldn't do this , now get the nurse to wheel you back in to your room! and if the sister catches you on the Holby computer again you will be for it .

    I won't tell you again " Go to bed !! "

Can't make this one as doing post-op caring duty for my mum. (Deep sigh of despondancy and disappointment).

Rick - good to see you haven't lost your sense of humour, I will be round with a nurses uniform should you need assistance!

Have a lovely time guys, watch out for werewolves.

Should be okay for the next one, and can we at least have vertical rain and not horizontal next time please!

I'm having many problems with stiffness and swelling Nurse Lucy. When I wake up with swelling I find that rubbing the affected area helps the swelling go down. Do you think you could visit my bedside too, in your uniform, and help me with it?

    I'm over 50.

You will find a bucket of cold water does the trick! Shall I come and administer? Shame on you sir! And you too Dave! Behave yourselves! Our poor Rick is suffering and you think only of yourselves, where is your bushcraft friendship and compassion? You should be offering to go round and nurse him yourselves - but no...that isn't a pretty image.

So back to the sensible stuff. I still need a definitive list of best hammock kit at a reasonable price. really must make the shift after messing up my knee crawling into the tent at the weekend, and then I will need lots of help in my first session of setting it up!!

I don't know how cold water will help my swollen knees. What did you think I meant?! Shame on you!!

Dave understood as he also has problem knees and it is also why he is a tree dweller.

I have just ordered a full swinging system from DD Hammocks - £124 the lot. Crawling in and out of a tent is making my joints creak.

So to answer your serious question: The concensus of opinion seems to be for DD Hammocks. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks Al. You may end up teaching me and Lucy how to swing together.

Also my apologies I just cant get the time off work at the moment for the jolly boys outing but I am going to Chepstow for the weekend
nobody mention Tinky Malinkus its too dangerous

Another vote for DD hammock from me Lucy. I don't have experience of other makes but I can see the prices though!
I've got the traveller and the frontline and I prefer the traveller. That may change in the warmer months if condensation becomes a problem but so far it hasn't.
If you don't make the leap before our next meeting then I'll bring one along for you to try for a night or three. Lots of pockets to hide your toothbrush from you-know-who too.

I'm swinging tonight in Chepstow and thinking of taking a chainsaw to whittle you that little something you've been after ;-)
If I can find a log big enough!

Hammocking! tis the work of the Devil, it don't matter who makes the dam things ,they are evil , i have tried several makes , daytime /nightime/sober/drunk and there is an entry in the Guiness book of records for me of 4 hours ! I hate you all ! there is nothing more i would love than to be normal and swing with the rest of you ,but something says no ! Strange really as a young man i could sleep stood up in a phonebox, and even now i find some funny old places to get my head down, ditches etc , but i am afraid the hammocky way is not for me.

To rub salt into the wound, even the werewolf , a confirmed ground dweller has been converted , it is never right !

Anyway good luck in your new ventures you two , still more places to slide under when too lazy to set up !

I will say no more on the matter...
