    Default Down Sleeping Bag Care

Whenever i sleep in my down sleeping bag i wake up with what feels like gnat bites on my legs.

Im assuming that there are some unsightly's nesting in my sleeping bag, so i wanted your advice on how best to get rid of them?

Tumble dryer for a few hours? will this kill them? or do i need to get some down treatment and give it a wash and then tumble dry?

its more likely to be the down filling starting to creep though, however if you want peace of mind a place in Sheffield does down cleaning, and is recommended by Rab for all their kit.
Used them before and was very pleased with the service .

The reason behind my assumption is the bites/sores are still itchy 48hrs after using the bag, so I thought bites?

put the bag in a sealed plastic bag, and pop it in the freezer for a couple of days. that will kill off most things

Have you had these problems in down bags before? May be an allergy, particularly if the quill bits of the feather mix are poking through the lining and scratching skin..

What makes you sure you are getting them in the night? Sounds like chiggers, who's bites don't itch until after a few hours.

Sounds like chiggers to me too but it's the wrong time of year for them...

Yeah, it's a bit early, but I've had them (or something similar) in the Spring before.

Hope it aint bedbugs - chances are they'll spread to your house and they're really hard to get rid of.

I did read something along these lines. What is strange though, the sleeping bag has been in my house for 3-4 months, uncompressed and unused until recently... But niether myself or anyone else in the house suffer from anything like bites etc.

Get some other people sleeping in it to see if it affects them perhaps?

might be worth a try. I've picked up some nikwax down proofer, so i might give it a wash with some baby shampoo and then give it some down proofer and tumble dry.

If you have a johnsons cleaners near you, they clean down bags for £19 rather than the absurd prices some places want to charge... thats if you dont want to do it yourself.
I've not used mine yet, but they came recomended by a mate that has all his down stuff done with them.

Bites normally irritate within a few hours but there's some images of chiggers bites if you google to compare.

My legs were itching pretty much the morning after, I've had a look on google and they don't look too dissimilar, mine are raised, red but dont have a head as such. Still itching now 3 days afterwards.

Im gonna give the baby shampoo/ nikwax down proof and tumble dry ago, see if I get anything afterwards
