    Default Anyone need wood cutting?????

I would like to test out my new chain saw but have no place or wood to cut, so for the very small sum of a couple of litres of petrol i could pop round and do some of yours...

needs to be local ish to Dishforth North Yorks though...

any takers???? or do people know of a farmer who might like a hand for the day????

    regards.

    chris.

Begs the question why you bought it in the first place?!

I made friends with someone who has a small wood that needs coppicing. Doesn't help you as I'm down South but that might be an option for you up there

Maybe ring your local log supplier and get a few stumps delivered that way you can make yoursef some bits of furniture for the garden. I got 4 About 20 inches thick and about 4 ft tall delivered for £50. Hours of fun to be had there mate and something to show for it at the end

the wood and area i was going to use has been placed out of bounds, people are getting all shirtey and up tight about the waste wood being used, and people using their own tools, im not even supposed to change a light bulb, how stupid is that...

anyway, i was allowed now im not....

Is the Forrestry Commission nearby, they do sell permits exactly for this sort of thing. Dont walk round Catterick wearing a hockey mask, the recruits may get scared.

I was canoeing on Brecon canal this week and the forrestry commission are decimating loads of woodland. A chap pulled up along the tow path with a whell barrow and was told he could help himself.

I would give the FC a ring and see what they say.

sorry for this advise but no way will the forest commision allow you on there land with a chain saw, without the proper trianing and safty kit. I would think farmers wouldent want you near as you wouldent be coverd on the libility insurance, theres a really good reason for the safty,

No worries - let me know if you ever fancy it - the stack is generally about double this

    3) My log stack by British Red, on Flickr

It gets cut in one mahoosive effort. Be a good chance to work your saw, my saws, the pneumatic splitter etc.

Can supply PPE - even chainsaw boots if you happen to be a size 8 or so. Some instruction, log benches, mauls, grenades, all here to be used...tutorial and lunch for labour

Its a "come and go" thing mate. Once a year I put my headphones on, gear up, and cut wood. Thats me warm come what may. It would be great to have some company even for a day. It gets old after a while - but a great feeling when its done

Tip me the wink mate and I'll get the beast out, we can have a chopping session again. But I think it might be frowned upon at the moment, I know hedge work is cos the birds are nesting

About to start again ....dropped an annoying ash and elder that were shading out my gooseberries. Tree surgeon chappy promises a seven and a half tonner full of cordwood in the next couple of weeks......

I also need to drop a decent sized blackthorn that is tearing its roots out. Seems a shame to chop 4" thick blackthorn up for firewood though doesn't it? I could easily part out a 6' length of 4" trunk....but I have no idea what it would be good for??

So if you fancy a saw day in June Lannyman...just say the word

    Default 6 foot Blackthorn

    Hi Red
if it was reasonably straight you could possibly get a lovely bow out of it, and it also makes great tool handles

Its pretty straight chas, but bows (as tent pegs ) are beyond my skill. Might make a spiffy sledge hammer handle I suppose.

WOuld a bowyer prefer it seasoned or green I wonder?

thanks red thats awesome but im away again... work work work......

i did manage to get permission to cut the stuff i was going to start of with anyway, my little saw works very well, but because the bar is only small i noticed the chain dulled very quiclky, it could also be a crappey chain of course.

the one thing that i did notice is that if left to idle any amount of time it konked out, not sure if this is for safety or not though, but could be a clogged filter or some thing, not sure...

that wood red is a wonderful colour inside and is tough as nails when seasoned well...

bows are made with dry wood too....

    thanks again red.....

It dometimes seem a shame when I run the saw over beautiful clean pieces of ash, oak and other woods and then sling it in the stove Trouble is its not the sort of thing you can post. I was round at my buddy's place last night looking at a lovely straight grained oak trunk some 2' in diameter and we were debating if its worth getting a guy in with a planking jig to rip it into planks....seems a crying shame just to section and split it for the fire.

Oh - if you are going to change chains, it might be worth looking at an Oregon Power sharp. I have just invested in a new electric saw for processing firewood and put the Powersharp bar and chain on. 5 seconds to sharpen it . Not tried it yet but if it works as advertised, I'll be a convert!
