I picked up half a dozen old files for £1 at the bootsale this morning, I'll bring them along. I'm sure we could beat and bend them into something interesting.
Just got my self one of these

As i have no fire kit or anything yet this gives me a little stove a pot i can stick in the fire and a little fire lighting kit![]()
would really like a old school flint and steel with an actual peace of flint but i think they would be hard to use
so any ways like a kid in a candy store at the moment
I'll be using my Swedish Trangia I got free!
Good luck with the wire saw - I didn't have good results with the one I was given...
my dad has got one it fits around hes wrists it obv bigger than this one but that seems to work really well
i got a outdoor meat clever thats what i call it anyways lol
its like a wood chopper just cleaned and sharpened it up gunna use that till i get an axe i may get and axe before i come dont know yet
a free Trangia nice man
yeah i got one with my new stove was 10.95 it work in the wood stove i ordered so gives me a backup just incase i can get any wood sorted or its wet
been looking at this axe
http://wildstoves.co.uk/hatchets-kni...ting/hand-axe/
its about the size i want but is expensive thats why im thinking it over hehe
any ideas on a good cheaper one ?
You'd be better off waiting & trying out a few axes at the meet to see what suits. A knife is more useful or have you already got one?
going to get a mora clipper they seem to have good reviews and are nice and cheap for a first knife that i will prob only brake or abuse
i have a very nice knife that was made custom for me but its for fishing really and prob wont take something beating on the back of it
do people use different style of axes to suit them ?
Clippers are good for starters & some people never "upgrade"
Yes, people use different axes for carving, felling, splitting etc.
ok cool what sort of cords do you guys use ? and where can i get some for hanging my tarp ect
think im set of a dd travel hammock as i can use it as a little 1 man biviy on the floor if needs be
I use utility cord from the pound shop. You can buy drums of starter cord cheap from eBay or just buy paracord
I've heard you can get condensation problems in that hammock as the base is so waterproof - think that's what jackcbr uses
ah yeah paracord thats it
hmm yeah maybe the front line then tbh i got a bivy bag ex army so if i want to go to the floor ill just use that on a mat
Wasn't someone lending you a hammock? I'd take them up on their offer as you might hate sleeping in it & save yourself the money
Good man. Is anyone else going to bring a forge or have a go at making one?Just done 2 charcoal burns in my bin and we now have a sack for forging

Usual for you Robin being short of air.
Hugo.
How big is the hole that the air is fed in? I can make another PC Fan & 9v battery thing, like I used last time. I have all the bits so can knock one up pretty quick if needed.I'm planning on bringing one but unsure how to pump the air into it

It's about 50mm - thinking about it, I've got a spare fan lying around - do you just run them straight from the 9V battery or is there circuitry involved?
It's the Travel and not the Frontline that suffers with condensation. I've a pedal powered 12v "genny" will we need it?
Statistically, 6 out of 7 dwarves are not Happy.
Might be selling my Travel soon if anyone wants one, just need to see if one of the two boys wants it first, if not it will get listed in the Classifieds here
You just need an on/off switch & you are good to go. You need a tube that goes from the fan to the forge which will get hot, so its best made of metal as plastic will melt. Mount the fan on a bit of wood connected to the tube or you can prop it at the end of the tube like I did last time. I will bring a couple of fans along anyway, so we should be covered. It's about 50mm - thinking about it, I've got a spare fan lying around - do you just run them straight from the 9V battery or is there circuitry involved?

SpareX if I can make the April meet I will show you how to use a flint with a steel striker. I will bring my fire box over so you can have a go at loads of different methods. The Forge Wood season has started so I'm not sure what meets I can make yet.

SpareX, if you get to the meet im bringing some steel down for use with the forge, so you can make you own striker from that if you like, i shouldnt have a shortage of metal for you to use either, barring that i can bring some of my existing flints & steels with me and you can have a play with those with all sorts of different tinders from natural to man made, i'll more than likely also have bow drill kits, hand drill sets, fire pistons, ferro rods etc as well, all depends on how much kit the boys and i decide to bring between us, i'll also see about bringing a bag of flint as well, got more than i know what to do with.

I have acquired an old piece of steel recently that looks interesting about 1/2 inch square and 3 feet long, I shall cut a few bits off and bring some with me.
Looking forward to seeing you guys, and your tasty nibbles.
Hugo.
Might head back up there on Wednesday mate and see if we can get a bit more of that steel ?
Hey Kepis, any chance of having a go at the bow drill. Never managed it by myself. Got a couple of bits of poplar drying in the LR to use for a hearth and a possible have rod for the drill.
