    Default DIY Snow shoes

After a tip from a swedish outdoor forum I have made me a couple of simple and cheap snow shoes.

All material comes from a low cost warehouse, www.biltema.se

-Car snow mats, in plastic, 60x23cm.
    99SEK/2 mats.

-VP-tubes 20 mm. Used for electrical installations.
For a short pair of shoes made of 2 mats you will need 2 meters.
For long shoes made of 2x2 mats you will need 2x2 meters.
    14,90SEK/2m.

    -VP-tubebends 90 degrees 20mm, 4/shoe. 24,90SEK/3 pieces.

    -Cable ties, 140mm. 29,90SEK/100 pieces.

    -Lashing bands, 2/shoe pair, 25 mm x ca 1,5 meter. 34,90SEK/2st.

The cost for short shoes sums up to the equivalent of less than 20GBP, and the long ones less than 30GBP.

For short shoes use 1 mat/shoe.
For long shoes use 2 mats/shoe, put them one over one another ca 20cm. Tie them tohether with min 4 cable ties.

Heat the mat in the front with boiling water and bend to desired angle.
The VP-tubes are cut in 4 pieces/shoe, 2 long and 2 short. The length on the long ones depends on the length of the shoe, the short ones should be ca 80mm for these mats.
Heat the long tubes in one end with boiling water and bend them to the samt angle as the mats with a "tube bender feather".
Connect the 4 tubes with 4 tubebends.
If you make the tube frame a 'bit to big' for the mat, it will compress with the cable ties and everything will be tight as we like it.
Attach the tube frame on the mat with cable ties.

Measure out the lashing straps and cut them if too long, I make them ca 1,5 meters.
Attach the straps just in front of the gravity center.

    DONE!

The short ones measure ca 58x23cm and the long ones ca 93x23cm.

Our youngest daughter will have the short ones, thanks dad!

The short ones, they weigh ca 480 gram/shoe.

The long ones, ca 770 gram/shoe.

This is how I attach the straps.

    How effective are they then?
This is how they work in almost 1 meter of powder...

And this is how deep I, almost 90 kg of pure muscles, sink in the same 1 meter of powder snow.
