South west Devon areas for bushcraft.

Hi all,
Any of you from around the south west of Devon at all? Was wondering where abouts you go to camp out the night and brush up n a few skills. Seems to be a real shortage of woodland relatively near by that is, A, open to the public, and B, legal to spend the night.
I realise there's the whole of dartmoor, but it's fairly barron, and not really the same as camping in woodland.
