    Default Anyone play the Concertina?

I've a longing to play the concertina - Does anyone here play, and how difficult is it to pick up?

I play guitar pretty well, keyboards and drums adequately, and can seem to get a passable tune out of most things.

Are you thinking of an English concertina (same note in and out on each button) or an Anglo (like a melodeon / mouth organ - different note on the push and pull).

Anglos are probably easier to get a rhythmical tune out of quicker than an English, but i think it depends on how your brain works.

Do you have a particular style of music you want to play? Do you want to accompany singing or other instruments or play solo?

You're also looking about £400 for a reasonable one.

Thanks for your reply Snozz - I'm leaning more towards an Anglo and I'd play shanties etc on it - I like the extra portability it affords over a guitar, and the beautiful sounds you can get from it. although the cost is definately prohibitive unless I can find a concertina player who wants access to an acoustic guitar for a while.

Theo Gibb has an Anglo for £300 which would be a good starter instrument http://www.theboxplace.co.uk/purchase/

You could also see if Hobgoblin or the Music Room shops still do monthly instrument rentals

Or - could be really cheeky and suggest a melodeon! (as I'm selling one currently for £150.. )

Aah! A Stephanelli Cajun style in D! Never got on with Cajun boxes myself. Prefer a two row but that's a decent starter box for someone wanting to try Cajun. I have an old one row four stop Hohner in C and I've never got the hang of Cajun!

I'll stick with my old Tommy! I have two Castagnaris, a Dino Baffetti and said Hohner. Sure I don't need another - yet...

Ha - nice try! That's a beautiful looking instrument, but I haven't the funds, and it hasn't the portablity I was after - better to stick with ma geetar.
