Thread: What a good site this is.

Default What a good site this is.

I am a member of three forums, this one plus a knife one and a deerstalking one which I hardly go on any more.

It is very noticable how positive everything is on here compared to the others.

I just tried to buy a £300 knife on one of the others only to be told, despite being a member for four years, that I'm not well known enough! True, I don't post much on there but I was always taught that if you don't have something useful to say then say nothing!

I think the whole forum thing is interesting and would make a great subject for phsycology or sociology Phd!

I suppose its a bit like pubs, you get to know the ones you like and make you feel welcome. I do not really consider myself a bushcrafter despite working outdoors all my life and having undertaken quite a bit of interesting stuff along the way but i think I will make this site my 'local'.

    Best wishes,
    Glyn.

Pull up a log around the virtual campfire
The kettle's on, and there's a pack of chocolate digestives passing around.

What were you trying to buy ? £300 buys a *lot* of knife.

For that sort of cash you could design your own and have a unique on-off made for you by one of the Makers here or on BB.

I agree, the forums are long overdue for Anthroplogy to research

    cheers,

Same sentiments with me. Best forum I think I've ever been on, and i've been on a few. Moderators always on hand but not heavy handed in their role. VERY generous people always offering advice and even items simply because they want to offer a helping hand to another.

Yeah good website this. So glad I found it. Restores my faith in human nature... until I get queue jumped at the local supermarket by someone with a trolley full of shopping and I have two items in my hand. Does make me seethe that too.

I have a rack full of good knives and have recently started making (well, putting handles on!) a few of my own. The £300 was for an Alan Wood that I fancied rather than needed! At least my girlfriend won't be able to moan about my impulse spending (until the next interesting thing comes along!!) Glyn.

Definitely a good forum. I came over from a more mainstream outdoors forum after a period of watching people at each others' throats online. Well that is how I took it. I came to the conclusion that I have never seen an online spat on this site. It is almost like the Stepford wives flipped on its head with the Stepford husbands (well it is mostly men on here I think). Everyone pleasant to each other but still up for a bit of cheerful banter.

BTW welcome to the fire and the biccies, there's also most likely to be a pass-around of a distinctly more alcoholic nature. Sloe gin? Malt? Absinthe? Or other home brew product designed to have you sober to drunk in a few rounds of the campfire!! You really must get to a meet sometime. If you think people are nice and helpful on here then wait til you meet them on a meet sometime. Went to one recently (missed the main event on the Friday night but have seen the photos and met those with more stamina who stayed on for the quieter Saturday night) and was made most welcome. Cue a bit of gear show and tell plus plenty of gear talk. I reckon that would be interesting on its own to an anthropologist.

You're dead right; this place is a great resource.

People will gladly offer advice and share their experiences.

I started a thread a while back about interesting user names; now that would make a great psychology thesis!

This is my electronic home, where all my cyber friends dwell....
I have met a fair few of them under the trees as well....and most of them are just as nice in the real world too
A generous bunch with their time, booze, expertise, booze, food, booze and friendly abuse....

Yep - I startedalmost three years ago with virtually no knowledge (never been in the scouts orforces). For example the first time I set up my hammock and tarp (in the back garden) it took me about 5 hours. And then when I used it that night I had to pack up half way through because Ihad set the tarp too low as condensation on the underside was making me wet.

I have found thepeople on this site really helpful and generous with their knowledge – even moreso when you go to a meet of some kind.

It all goes tomake it great fun learning new stuff.
One day I might grow up - but I hope not

There are not many ways that I would say that the internet have changed my life but this forum is one of them.

It has introduced me to a community of friends and kindred spirits and presented me with opportunities that I would never have dreamt of.

I have always enjoyed being out in the wilderness but it is great to find you are not alone at times.

i to can only echo people words, i love this place, and the people on here, have spoken to, and met some great people of here, very kind people the mods are very fair, and reasonable, and easy to approach if you need some info.
out of all the sites i have been on, this is my favorite, they slowly dwindled one by one, until i only really use here and BB now, all the info and great people i need are on these to sites.

There has been weird stuff happen on forums. How about

"A German gamer has been arrested near Frankfurt on suspicion of involvement in the death of a British student, Matthew Pyke.

The unnamed suspect is believed to have had a disagreement with Pyke on Wars Central - a forum for fans of the Advance Wars series that Pyke moderated.

Police allege that the 21 year old man traveled to Nottingham, UK, and gained entry to Pyke's flat where he stabbed the 20 year old student to death. Pyke's body was discovered last Friday by his girlfriend, also a site moderator.

weird indeed. I reckon the easiest way to go about things is to imagine you are talking to someone face to face. Less virtual arguments that way.

Although I did once go on a US Marine forum thing, pretty pi$$ed it must be said, and suggest that US Marines are largely gay! Ooooh, the abuse that came back

I've only been here for a couple of weeks, and it feels really nice, non-threatening and very welcoming. Many thanks to the good burghers of this forum.
