    Default Archaeological sites under threat

    I've just heard that Cambridgshire council are no longer going to require developers to take into consideration any archaeological remains when applying for permission to dig up the Fens. Normally some archaological investigationis a standard part of any planning application(even if it's just somebody looking at the appllication and shrugging their shoulders). For those that don't know, the Fens has a huge amount of untouched archaeology lying beneath the ground and if it's not recorded as its ripped up then we will never know what has been lost.

    Apparently they will overturn that ridiculous decision if enough people sign a petition against it. So if you want to add your name to the campaign then please please click the linky below.

    Oh that's awful really dreadful.

    No other nation pays so little for it's cultural heritage, and I don't think any other nation insists that developers have to accept the full brunt of the costs.
    It belongs to *all* of us; it's *our* history, *our* roots. It matters to the majority, yet a few intent on making money can rip it to shreds without even recording it.

    At least with the presumption in favour of preservation in situ there was some hope that the archaeology might be conserved until funds allowed proper research, recording and interpretation.
    This just totally destroys it permanently.

    Didn't know that was in the remit of local councils to change. Will sign after checking with someone I know who is a council archaeologist. AFAIK it was the Home Office/Secretary's remit (government) as it was part of UK Laws. I hope it isn't so and join with you but I will check up. Prefer to set my mind straight before I sign up. Hope that's OK.

    Duly signed but still going to mention it to my mate when I see him. From what he says most of the Archaeologist's actions in development sites involved checking out the council's register of known archaeological sites (those dug, those not and those suspected as being in an area but not yet found). If nothing shows up as being likely they make a decision if any action is needed. They work closely with developers and rely on their cooperation which is mostly forthcoming. At least that is what I got from when he talks about his work (which is not that often). Some in his area (larger developers that is) seem ok with the current system although a few resent it he once said. The current system has been in place for some time and does work. Perhaps the councillor is thinking that he can shed an archaeologist or two from their payroll. I bet they probably only have a few anyway. They are only small departments or parts of the council employees anyway. Most of any digs or surveys get farmed out to private companies anyway for developments.

    Perhaps the system does need looking at but not scrapping. IF councils can do this then we need laws to prevent is IMHO. The whole planning system is prety ropey anyway I think. Nothing will change in the current political and economic climate anyway.
