My mate is looking into making them on his lathe. Basically a hollow tube with a plug to hold in the float, hooks etc. Would it be the sort of thing to sell - obviously depending on price and quality etc

Yes, I think they would sell. I use a commercial hand line or a crab line. A hobo would be nice.
Statistically, 6 out of 7 dwarves are not Happy.
if they were made in differend sizes that would be a big plus![]()
i'd like to see one made out of aluminum, about the size of a k&M match case.
http://www.kmmatchcase.com/
i guess i could just convert a K&M, but it would be pretty expensive.
yeah i have just got one off ebay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=110659093410
its a great little bit of kit they seem to sell really well and it has a little capsule in the end to keep a few hooks and split shot ideal for keeping in a jacket pocket when wandering by the river
''there are no such things as strangers, only friends I haven't yet met''
Have u tryed it yet Andy , i got one aswell of the same seller , looking forward to giving it a go ...
not yet mate just got it a week ago and the cars off the road till tuesday but can't wait and looking at videos on you tube using similar things i have high hopes
would be ideal up on the lochs of scotland after some wild brown trout ,you'll have to put up a report when you try it
yeah seen a few arguments online about is it/isn't it (something i don't want to argu about)and also seen posts about people on forums using them on canadian canoes in scotland
i know we should n't condone anything illegal but i have a rod liscence, pay for my fishing,
also people still go out poaching with air rifles, catapults, ferrets, dogs etc for something for the pot
these ancient laws were brought in by the rich against the poor man which in my opinion are wrong
also i bet the majority of people on here wild camp in woods without permission which in england/wales and ireland and drive over the speed limit at least once it is all illegal
sometimes rules have to be bent
but its just my opinion and counts for little![]()
yep bud ,, sometimes rules do have to be bent ... yer spot on .
Great post Andy, couldn't agree more.
Hang on people, just because you don't agree with a rule doesn't mean you're exempt from it
Rules is rules and you're talking of breaking not bending them.
Doesn't matter how you justify it, it's still illegal.
Handlines are of interest to bushcrafters from an interest point of view but please bear in mind that they cannot be used on inland water in the UK
I don't want to lock this thread out of respect for the OP, but if we have have to....
Thanks everyone
Mark
In a world whose only quarrel with instant gratification is that it takes too long, we are practitioners of a dying art: patience."
Nae worries mate ...
Just fashioned this one with my saw, axe & knife - perfectly feasible in the field. The only power tool was the drill to hollow out the middle for some kit, and the most fiddly part was the plug for said hole. Hope you like (much cheaper than anything else, and satisfying to have made). Was thinking about doing a tutorial post of anyone is interested. Just got to finnish it off with some linseed oil and get the fishing line on.
Didn't know hand lines were illeagal on inland water, thats a bit of a bummer especially as I just purchased a rod license to test this bad boy out. Will have to resort to my telescopic "pen" rod
How have you got on with the Pen Rod?
Time Is Precious. Waste It Wisely.
Haven't actually used the pen rod yet, only just got the rod license and not had it out and about when Ive been anywhere near some water for a spot of poaching, which I would of course never partake in![]()

Looks good that, A hobo has been on my to do list for a while now. I had a hobo line while traveling abroard and i caught my supper many times with one too. Also caught a lot a puffer fish lol
Cheers Treetop
I'm no fishing expert and so am a bit puzzled,
Do these hobo reels fish differently than the hand caster reels that you can get on the web. (google search for handcasters)?
It it a size / space thing?
Thanks,
They work in a similar fashion... Put pack up much, much smaller.

This is my firestick... There are many like it, but this one is mine.
Just curious, but why are these illegal in a situation where using a rod wouldn't be? Is it because they are concealable, and therefore someone has decided that they are solely the tools of a poacher?
To fish in freshwater destinations you need a rod license... Handlines (where) a loop hole that has now been closed. (if I'm correct)
