What is the most important piece of kit?
What is the most important piece of kit?
Your brain, although that is not really kit........A good knife or Axe
For bushcraft - Knowledge followed by your knife.
For life - clean underpants in case you stop a bus with your face.
I think my husband is a good bit of kit, although he does need a lot of looking after!![]()

If I had just one bit of kit? An Axe, which is a good reason why i should get round to buying my own
Success is not measured by what you have, but by what you can do without.
Without a doubt, knowledge.
Followed by a knife.
Add a good dash of sense of humour! :-D
Kit General =Knowledge/Brain
Kit Kit =Good Knife

maybe if I get a deacent edge on my credit card, it just might... :-?
Knowledge/training is the best bit of kit, followed by the edged tool of your choice that you can do the most with 8-)
Oh I nearly forgot......BEER !!! :-D
You could always leave the knife at home, drink the beer and make a knife out of the empty cans or bottles! :-D :biggthump  :uu: :ekt:

i like most equipment-wise would opt for a cutting tool but , if you loose it it's worthless to you!
you have the knowledge to find cutting implements and find ways of not having to cut stuff, millions apon millions of cavemen did and survived and adapted as they saw fit! the whole point of bushcraft is to bring back that self relient world again so we can teach others!
so yes, the brain is the kit for me!
If I had to go out my front door just now, I think I'd probably want a lighter. I know I'd be able to get enough wood by hand to have a decent fire all night, and since I haven't yet mastered fire by friction, I'd need something to get it going, of course if 1 box of matches counts as one piece of kit then I'd take that instead. Or maybe, when I think about it, maybe just a decent sleeping bag because my already built debris shelter would keep any rain/snow off.
Longer term I reckon making some sort of cutting tool would be easier to improvise from found items whilst I learned to make fire by friction so I probably would keep the lighter.
cheers
Justin
Sorry but YOUR brain does'nt count.![]()
So it has to be a knife. The knife can cut your bow drill, and wood for you shelter, cut that cordage that it took you solong to make, and fasion traps.....

"What is the most important piece of kit?"
The flashing red light that was on his bonnet.

It's Adventure In A Bowl...
1= Knowledge because without this your stuffed
2= A good knife, this will give you food, fire and shelter.
And I'll second Ray's or Gary's number on speed dial under HELP!!!!

To me, fire is the most critical part of my kit. Something to boil water in and then an edged tool.
All life is subject to the laws of Nature, or to be more precise, the laws of our CREATOR.
A First Aid Kit. :-D
There are normally edged tools in them and they also carry other essentials that can be used in a pinch, including tinder, Oxidising agents, sugar, painkillers, salts and a host of other things.
Try telling someone with a broken ankle that your knife or axe will ease his pain![]()
Hi...
If you take away knowledge, then i would go for:
1. Big knife - (not machete!)
2. Cooking pot
3. A sewing needle
These 3 things are the ones who is most difficult to make out of the materials in nature. If I should choose 3 'second class' things i'd say:
1. Firesteel
2. Cordage
3. Poncho
If only allowed one piece of kit,it would have to be an axe for me.
Mike
If a man is talking in the woods and there is no woman to hear him, is he still wrong?
Yep, I think I'll take an axe too!
Dave

I'll go for a good pair of boots as my first choice.
