    Default Pine firedrill and board?

Is pine any use for a fire drill or board?
If not has anyone got a list of woods they prefer to use most to least descending order. :chill:

Pine is not the best wood, especially if it's got any resin in it. As the resin heats, it melts, drips down and produces some sort of a varnish that reduces friction and makes horrible squeeking noises... So loud it could be used as a signaling device LOL

Anyways I did get an ember with pine, but it's hard. You have to choose the highest part of a dead branch, so the resin content is as low as possible. Friction fire with fat wood is impossible... at least to me

More than just a wood, you might want to check for good combos. For example, a hazel drill and a vine root board (hard to find dry...). That works great. Otherwise, not too hard woods with long, supple fibers work best : ash is a good one. Willow is good, Hazel is great. You might also consider Mullein skeletons. Cut short, the big ones are sturdy enough to be usable as a fire drill (with the bow). The thin ones are best used with the hand drill method.

The harder the wood, the more you have to downsize everything.

    Hope this helps !

    Cheers,

    David
