If you're in a pine forest just boil up some pine needles in water and spray that on, when it's cooled down of course.
Apply that method for other environments - using natural plant scents.
Nothing beats staying down wind though.

I understand that a number of the scent products are the squeezins from deers' scent glands, or chemically synthysized equivalents.
