These are great to don't have to worry to much about fire scares on the ground and relatively safe of not starting a forest fire with it ether and great to cook on if needed....

nice but surely its kinda hard to do if you havnt got a chainsaw thow?
pete
I split the log in quarters with axe or knife and wedge. Then embed all quarters in the ground about 3 inches deep to bring to "log shape" again. It works okSo no chainsaw required.

Like it! Like traper said, pretty hard without a chainsaw?
or are we missing something?
Hmm- I think it's quite easy to set it up without chainsaw. Although it maybe hard to do on hard ground.
They are easy enough to make with an axe. Though you have to be more critical with log selection. Get a piece with no knots or as few and small as possible if using an axe/big knife as it will split easily, then point one end a bit. With a chainsaw there are no considerations.
What's the easiest way to do this in the field? Also, what can I use if there is no bark to hand? Would paper work?
Asa.
We used saw to cut the log and axe to split it and digging stick. Don't think that there's easier way ( without chainsaw).

You can use small twigs or shavings if there is no bark.
