Default good bushcrafty location, southern scotland?

looking to get away in the next couple of weeks with the family: i fancy the pitlochry area, but the drive could well make that a no go.

so, can anyone recommend anywhere in scotland further south with nice scenery, rivers / lakes/ mountains?

Theres plenty of rivers, hills and scenery along the A7 borders route, and also some nice scenery near Dumfries and Galoway, over on the East, theres plenty of rugged coastal places from Berwick up tweed up to North Berwick im sure someone will be able to give you specific locations as ive just passed them traveling (except the east coast part where i live)
