Thread: Get Together in Cornwall -- February

Default Get Together in Cornwall -- February

    Hello

I've been in conversation with a Rawshak (Justin) and Nightwalker (Ashley) with a view to arranging a get together in Cornwall in February.

Ashley has recommended a wood near to St Austell that encourages camping, doesn't mind fires, fishing (they have their own lake) and most other bushcraft-stuff.

As far as dates are concerned, how does either Sat 14th or Sat 28th Feb sound? Could include Friday as well but I have to work and couldn't get there in daylight?

Cost is £5 per night so not too bad and a good opportunity to shake some of the dust off those tarps and hammocks.

If you're interested, post here along with a preferred date and I'll contact the owners to sort something out.

    Martin

The permission to use the land hasn't been confirmed yet, but hopefully it shouldn't be a problem, im waiting on word back from the landowner.

Ok, the landowner has got back to me and given permission to have a camp/meet of say 12 people or so. I think we should have met up and discussed it a little before posting it up for everyone but hey.

The 14th of Feb is just fine for me as its the start of my holidays, however a co-worker did just point out to me that this date is Valentines day; My wife is very understanding so I'd probably be in the clear, however I know my good friend has already made plans, so its something to bear in mind and not forget men!

I can do either, but the 28th is probably better for me. Definitely up for it though

It looks like the 28th seems to be favourite. Can't wait for this to happen, what sort of things would people like to do when we're there?

I'm a hammock virgin so I want to learn how to pitch my hammock and tarp and get a decent night's sleep.

Oh, you think you're a virgin I'm used to camping with a car!

Personally, I'd be happy to just chill and swap stories.

It will be interesting to see how a larger group of normally quite independent people operate and how different skills are applied. I'll be bringing a note book.

Has anyone made a decision yet for a date as I now find I could do either day. 28th is preferred.

I don't believe that a date has been 'finally' set but my money would be on Sat 28th overnight till Sunday 29th.

Ashley is struggling a bit for time to devote to this at the moment and, if he can't get back to me by the middle of this week, I'll contact the land owner and book it for 28th.

Therefore, I could really do with an idea of numbers for the 28th so that I can let them know what they are in for. Hope this is OK for all concerned.

Seeing as I already run a page for Bushcraft events I thought I'd centralise more info for this meet:

    Meet Info: www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk/bushcraft-events#woodland-valley

There is a restriction on numbers, but I shouldn't think that'd be a problem, we'll use this thread to keep track of who is coming.

I think I remember seeing this oven the first time I visited this wood, I haven't seen the oven in a long time but I think it looked a little ropey when I saw it, semi-covered in bramble I think. I'll check it out, perhaps thats a project we could do? See if it needs restoring a little, I've never built one myself.

Right, so an update on whos coming, I'll also list this over at NaturalBushcraft too:
    • Ashley/Nightwalker/Me
      Scott
      rawshak
      Sainty
      Rhoda

      Kai (Day-visiting?)
      Angie
      Paul Lakeman
      ANDYRAF
      smarvell (Steve)
      craven
There might be 1 or 2 more to come.

    Default Sleeping and Eating

I was wondering what sleeping arrangement people will be using for the weekend. This will be my first non-summer night out without a tent and I'm trying to get a picture of what people use at this time of year. Hammock/Ground and spec of sleeping bag would be excellent. I'm trying to determine if my 3 season will be suitable.

Also, are we going to collaborate on food? I can probably get a deal on a big hunk of lamb if people want to chip in and make a monster stew.

Funnily enough, I've been having the same thoughts about sleeping bags.

I'll be taking my hammock, sleeping mat, tarp, and an old sleeping bag that has always kept me warm enough in a tent but then again, I can't remember using it in February and definitely not since I turned 40. I was thinking about layering up with clothes before bed time and hoping for the best. The forecast on Metcheck is for around freezing nighttime temperatures for the end of the month.

Still can't wait though and it will nice and warm by the fire.

    Martin
