its gonna be like an all-purpose knife if you know wot i mean :biggthump
I'm afraid that a machete wouldn't be that good for carving or other similar tasks. Chopping and splitting is the force of a machete. But a big knife, backed up by a small, is a good mix. :biggthumpOriginally Posted by willie
i get ur point but i have a small knife and was then recommended to get a machete
I see. Well, I've never tried a decent machete or golock style, so. :biggthumpOriginally Posted by willie
well good luck if u try it lol :-P
if ur skilled enough with a machete it can be used for almost anything :biggthump
If my maths is correct Willie then you cannot buy a machete (too young - sorry).
However if your parent/guardian will be buying one for you then please be more careful than a very careful thing. In the hands of a novice a parang/machete/golok is extremely dangerous.
I see your comment re a machete being used for almost anything. Haven't just been watching Mr Mears per chance? True a skilled user can do loads with one, a beginner could just as easy delimb themselves instead of their intended branch.
yea i know wot u mean but ive been using one for like 5 years when going camping wit my dad and i know how to use one and control one but thnx for looking out for me lol :-P
this is willie on my m8s comp lol never noticed lol :-P
A decent billhook will do all a machete can, along with most a knife or axe will do. A machete was designed for bushcraft in certain environments, a billhook is the all purpose bc tool for our (and to a skilled user every) environment.
Check out what woodlandorganics have to offer.

lol just realised i hav the staffordshire billhook lol

I just returned from a brief errand. I was behind a big fat SUV with a bumpersticker that read "Buy American, the job you save may be your own." With that in mind,YOU buy british, specifically a Martindale. They come in several usefull patterns, have a fair sheath and excellent file for field sharpening. American military issue machetes are to heavy. Tramontinas from Brasil are decent and cheap. They also rust and dull just looking at them. Cold Steel copies half the ethnic blades of the world and manages to forget basic design criteria in each one learned from generations of trial and error.
thanks mate thats some good advice that im going to take head to :biggthump
cheers
Just for you :wave:Originally Posted by willie

Maybe not the best but at the right price.

Anyone got a source for Martindale blades? Don't much fancy buying a crate of 72 somehow.
You can usually pick one up on e-bay but the quality of the seel is not great.Originally Posted by Lurch

Not a big fan of evil-bay!
Martindale have a rather annoying policy. They won't sell within the UK!
I wanted one of their No.4 Jungle knives, was initially told I could buy from them for £12. Then told that they couldn't sell to me in the UK. The reason given was that some nutter went mad with a machete in a school just down the road from them. Not one of their machetes, but that still isn't the sort of publicity anyone wants.
They only sell a couple models in this country. Unless you are in the army...
I eventually got the No.4 from the US, $45, heck of a lot better than the £45 they were going for here!![]()

Being lost is a state of mind, not a state of place.
If you go with a reputable dealer e.g.:Originally Posted by Lurch

you should be ok. I got one from them with no problems.

These people have an advert in the BTCV Conserver magazine and they list a Martindale Bush Knife (looks like a machete) at £16.50 with sheath and file, maybe they could get other models if you ask.
