Thread: Irish meet MK2 july?

    Default Irish meet MK2 july?

ok, as there have been a few mentions of meets for us irish types lately i thought i would drag another "meet" thread out into the light to see how it looks. (*argh!!the light! it burns!*)
as has been mentioned in this othe thread http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30946
it looks like there will be a meet in october in Co.Down (all going well). sounds great to me.

if anyone is interested in something sooner i could probably organise something in Gort, Co.Galway for a weekend in July sometime. woodland with permission to do our thing, bunk houses for those too soft to kip outside. shower house for toiletry needs.

if i get a show of hands on this one, accompanied by a vote of which weekends of july you would prefer (and which you cannot make) i will try get the ball rolling on this one.
    what say you folk?

Sounds like an excellent idea, but, for me anyhow, July isn't a good month. Have to take the family to France for 2 weeks, then live on bread and water for the rest of the month to pay it off.

I would be up for that too. 25th-27th probably best for me.

I forgot to say that the only wkd. that I can't do in July is 4th-6th. Keep up the good work trying to set this meet up.

I would be interested to taking part but I'm away till the 6th of August.
I should be alright to make the october meet though.

I am not sure if people here are aware but there is talk of forming a bushcraft club in wicklow with insurance and everything on boards.ie.

ok, all seems good to go for a meet in Gort from the 18th-20th of july. this date was chosen primerily because the next weekend is galway races, and that is a pain in the **** time to be trying to get into galway area.attending will be myself and my friends, many of whome have no bushcrafty experiance at all, so it will. be a friendly introduction to hanging out in the woods.
cost = free, technically. i have not discussed money with Flor or Marian (landowners) and i am naturally not looking for money myself, but bringing gifts (financial or otherwise) for Flor and Marian to help them keep their beautiful woodland and excelent facilities would be appreciated.
insurance = not a chance. we wont leave you to die if you stab yourself though there will be capable first aiders an site.
food = bring your own. bring all sorts of stuff. i am sure food will be traded and exchanged. if anyone has anything interesting. cooking will be over a campfire and / or camp stoves.
equipment = bring what you can. i will bring what ever spare kit i can. tents, foam mats, tarps etc. but the more potentially self sufficiant you can be, the better. if you are short on a bit of kit, PM me and i will see if i can hunt you up something.
activities = its really up to yourself. play with fire, build natural shelters, do a bit of archery (if you have a bow. leftys can borrow mine), make your spoons, try out peoples kit, paddle on the nearby lake (if you have a canoe) play music. any further things you would like to try, just add say and we will see if its feasable.
so far, there are about 6 confirmed to be there. i would really like to make it an even dozen at least, so if you can, come along. hope this suits people.

    Good stuff.

You mentioned that people may need to borrow equipment in one of your posts. I have a couple of spare 2/3 man tents and misc. pots and pans that I can bring along if people need them for the wkd. Let me know if you need anything.

    Hi,

I am thinking of attending if that would be OK.
I will be driving up with our Land Rover, and I will be travelling from Belfast to Dublin to pick some people up and then over to Galway. I currently have 4 places free, if anyone is interested in travelling up with us, then please let me know. (info@wild-live.org or PM) It would be nice to have all 7 places taken.

    Kind regards,

antonio. course you are welcome. we will probably have a few people needing transport from dublin. i will let you know once we have a solid list of who is coming sorted and how they are traveling. thanks very much for the offer. so far even my transportation isn't confirmed. so if anyone has vehicle room, post up here. also anyone with no vehicle post up. personally, i have no vehicle, but should get down with Donal. hopefully lol.

so far the list is looking a little like this from bushcraftuk

    irishlostboy (+1)
    preacherman (+1?)
    loz
    nicolas(+1?)
    antonio (+2?)
(partners etc. question mark = to be confirmed)

add about five more from other places, and its looking like a good meet to me. thanks all for getting involved with this.

Are there any details about the site, any pics, map etc ?

there are pics of the wood on my blog http://irishlostboy.blogspot.com/ not very informative.
re space we have to work with. we will have a large enough mixed broadleaf woodland. some fields (for archery, tents, whatever) there is a crannog with a ger on it. (and also an amazing spring well. best water i have ever tasted) there is a bunk house with two rooms of four bunks per room, a kitchen, a wash house with 3 showers and two composting toilets. the woodland will provide space for tents/ tipis/ hamocks etc for all. as well as plenty of space for use to do our thing. i dunno the acreage. i have not actually fully explored its limits.
re; getting there. the location is five miles outside of Gort, Co. Galway. i will do up exact directions etc. the best bet would be all to meet in Gort and convoy from there. i will probably try do up a map though also.
    how does that sound?

Sounds good to me. Any idea what time you would like to meet in Gort. I would have to make sure I can get off work a bit early on that day. Its a long spin from Cork to Galway as you know.

nice one loz. ya, bring a spare hammock if you have one. there will be a few spare tarps floating around i am sure.
re; meet-up time, it will have to be late-ish, as most people have a whack of traveling to do, but not too late so wecan get our shelters set up and our bellies fed. i would say six might be the best time. but if some cant make it till later thats fine. i am hoping to be there earlier so i can get some essentials set up.

Six is good for me I'd say. I may now be travelling on my own to Gort so I would have room for 1 person (I only have 2 seats). I would be heading from east Cork, around the city and out towards Mallow. From there on to Limerick, Ennis and finally Gort. I can pick up somebody anywhere along or near that route if they need a lift. Give me a shout if anyone on this route needs a lift.

hey all; sorry been no word from me. been up to the eyeballs. all is going well. details are like this for people travelling from dublin.
Meet at the Foxhunter pub on the N4 for 12:00 on Friday 18th to fill empty seats in peoples vehicles. there are 4-5 people with no fixed ride down at the moment. from there we will head to Gort (take road to Galway, turn off for Gort at Loughrea)
Meet in Aldi in Gort at 16:00 on Friday 18th convoy out from there to the location.
    for people arriving in gort late, directions to the location are thus;
go out the N66 from gort (northeast) take the first proper turn-off on the right (its about 2-3k out the road) should be signposted "kilbeacanty" and goes north of Lough Cutra.go straight down this road about 2-3k. Crannog has a small wooden signpost on the top of their driveway (its on the left) so keep your eyes open and go slow. simple enough. any problems, please call me before you get lost. it would be a simple thing for someone to come in to gort to meet stragglers. i will try photograph the map in a little bit.

there will be a central open fire. if someone knows what they are doing they can do their own, but in general i would like to keep it to the one if possible.

food is every man for himself. there will be experianced people there to help the few novices we will have in attendance, and i am sure some food trading will happen. and if anyone feels the need to do a big dish to share, the rest of us will surely help you eat it lol

entertainment will just happen i am sure. we have a bit of an all-star cast with both Anthonio Akkermans AND Aebhric O'Kelly showing up. i can bring a lefty Bow and a few arrows. if anyone else has any stuff, bring it. there should hopefully be enough wood lying around for both fire and craftwork. i doubt boredom will be an issue though.

regards drink; (and everything else) the attitude will be; responsible for thyself. if you wanna drink, thats cool. i may bring a bit of brandy myself. we will have a very mixed demographic of people, so keeping it friendly and safe is of prime importance.
we should have about 15 people, give or take. about three quarters experianced people, one quarter total green horns wanting to give it a go.

i think thats everything. oh yea! everyone coming, please make sure you have my NUMBER; zero eight seven, 12 11 zero 11. any problems, please call. as we get nearer the friday, it will be the best way to contact me. if anyone has any more questions, shoot, or suggestions or whatever.
