The problem is that because of the near incomprehensible time scales involved and the relative youth of the human race, we're still moaning about coming out of the last ice age. :?:

Yes things are getting warmer and warmer... but they have been since everything stopped getting colder and colder.

The burning of fossil fuels... well, yes it's fairly polluting and yes, the ozone layer is starting to look like Swiss cheese... but these were also the perfect conditions for creating life on this planet... lots of heat and lots of water not trapped in the poles.

I'm not an optimist by any means, I think we'll (us humans) will stuff ourselves somehow in the next 10,000 or so years but this is the way of things.

So, cheer up, the earth could be a big lifeless block of dead raw material, and rain makes the world smell new and everything clean. Sometimes I'm the only one walking home after work grinning in the pouring rain.

curiously enough floating ice (like most of the stuff on the map) when it melts doesnt take up any more space in the sea than it did as ice

a floating body displaces its own weight of liquid, if that makes sense

    as for fossil fuels.........

i can only say that all the coal oil and gas now being mined originally came out of the atmosphere from co2 gas
plants converted it to sugars and cellulose which then changed into fossil fuels

all we are doing by burning it is returning it to the atmosphere

but of course the politicians wont tell ya that

the problem is that we are releasing it in a fraction of the time that it took to put it there

The big problem we have is the desalination of the gulf stream - no one knows how much or how long but once it stops - and it will - we had all best put on our thermals!

Have a read of the book - the coming global superstorm - the authors predict this weather, and thus far they seem to be spot on in their predictions.

And you can bet your plums that next year the water companies will say that the Artesian wells are dry and enforce a hosepipe ban!

Despite this being the wettest August since records began...

on a geological timescale we have little or no record of things like ozone layers and ice caps

sure we can look at stuff and make theories

but really put it in perspective

humans have been able to observe the ozone layer for mere decades and ice caps perhaps a century?

heck we didnt even know america was there till 400 years ago

between me and my dad we have 120 ish years

    2 things here

1 I can not really change this situation (tho i have emailed george bush to ask him to turn lights off behind him)
2 Until it happens (whatever it may be) it is all unproven theory anyway

whizz kids like einstein and stephen hawking have revised their theories over the years, very few theories turn out to be 100% bullet proof, even newtons apple

i think the important thing is not to panic
    be prepared yes

bit longer then that ...... plus, at the Roslyn Chapel near Edinburgh ....... completed before Columbus set sail ... there is the peculiar appearance of carved Maize and Aloe Vera plants in the carvings .. suggesting the Poor Knights of the Temple of Solomon may have gone further than Columbus ever did

    lol ok my history sux

yeah seen the carvings at roslyn it is not far from me here

but i think my point is still valid, we have geological evidence of ice ages and dry spells, sea beds turned into mountain ranges etc etc with only theory to explain what actually happened

I'm also thinking of a picture of the thames in london where the ice was so thick the people lit bonfires on the ice and had a fair

yeah if ya want the doom and gloom theories, mother nature is overloaded with homo sapiens and as usual mother nature will find a way to redress the balance

those who know some bushcraft and survival may be better able to survive @ la charles darwin

    who can tell?

Although we all like to rant on at the water companies, they arent entirely wrong. Sadly, all the water that we have barely has a chance to reach the aquifers etc as it just ends up as run off thanks to a variety of factors including building on flood plains and not allowing the natural flow of water that has occurred since time began (when did time begin by the way??? or was it always there........).

However, the water companies cant get off lightly though as they do need to make sure that their infrastructures doesnt leak like a sieve!

Or that every time it rains a bit, the drains can handle it and they don't have to pumps tons of raw sewage in to the Thames to stop people's homes filling up with :***:
