Paul Baker the knife maker???

Has anyone on here heard of a knife maker by the name of Paul Baker and if so does he make a good knife?

My set is slightly different to the one in the link in that it is broken down to its basic elements, see here:



The M1 wild survivor series knife in kit form. Comprising the following.

Fully finished blade pre-drilled for bolts and lanyard tube.
Two handle scales, Oak, Spalted sycamore or Spalted beech. Others available.
Two brass loveless style bolts and lanyard tube.
Pre cut 4mm leather belt sheath ready for assembly. Includes a chicargo screw to mount the belt loop. And a length of waxed sewing thread. The
Loop can be mounted either left or right handed. And has a firesteel mount.
Instruction sheet.
The blade is 4mm 01 tool steel, differential heat treated and tempered to rc 59. 4inch blade and 22cm overall

Oh yes. Paul makes lovely knives. He specialises in Japanese swords and bushcraft style knives. His heat treatment is particularly good. I have one of his Bowies - a replica of the original P.B. Searles bowie and a fine knife it is too....

I have one of his knives (an Outback) and I'm chuffed to bits with it; I would happily compare it to the AW/Woodlore I had a while back; perhaps some very very minor differences but overall a solid well made knife. Superb finish and quality 'feel'; performs well for all tasks I've used it for; in short, excellent value for money in my opinion.

I carried a Paul Baker Bushmantz for years - a very fine knife it was too. Indeed I only parted with it for the H4H auctions over Christmas. It was a very fine knife and remains so - solid and unfussy and very capable

I have a Bushman.tz too, very nice knife, good solid feel - is my main user - can't speak for many other makers but this one is up there.

i've had a Paul Baker and Timinwales has still got his. They are top knives, but the picture you've posted does'nt look anything like the Paul Baker Knives i've seen. Not only that but i've not heard that he's started doing kit's. Did you get it direct from Paul? If not, i'd send him an e-mail and check bud. If it is a genuine one, then you've got a bargain mate. They really are very good and Paul's such a nice fella.

Many moons ago I saw an eBay knife kit for ‘P. Baker’ knife, I emailed him. He expressed disappointment that people were allowed by eBay to sell knives using his name, even though he complained, eBay did nothing about it. I doubt that much has changed since.

I've noticed that the bushman shop does not use the correct email address of Paul at the Bushman uk website, the ebay one is a 'throwaway' tiscali address paulkn@tiscali.co.uk.
Whereas Paul uses his own domain name. I‘ll email Paul and ask him.

Yeah, I've got a Paul Baker New Graduate, and it's a very nice knife. I find it better than either the WS Woodlore or the Fallkniven F1, but I suppose that might just be because I'm used to it.

I was initially a little concerned about that eBay sale, but from the looks of his feedback, it's legit. Using a throwaway address for your eBay account isn't entirely a bad idea, either...

Maybe he figured that if other people were going to eBay knives in his name, he might as well get in on the act.

Hi all.

Greg, thank you for your phone call and thanks to every one for the emails. I can confirm that the knife kits, and any knives on ebay, are definatly by myself. An easy way to check is to see my ebay shop, BUSHMANuk. all listings including auctions are shown here. The email, paulkn@tiscali.co.uk is the address used when I set up the ebay account and before I had a domain name. My website as always is seriously in need of an update, just dont seem to get the time.
I was presented with a Bear Grylls by Rob Bayley knife, as a 40th anniversary present from a fellow maker, (it hardly seems like 40 years since I made my first knife). Though a very nice well made knife, it is a little expensive at its asking price. My wild suvivor M1 model, though loosely similar, is 01 tool steel (I hate working with stainless) and has no bolsters in standard form and the grind is better suited to bushcraft use. I have started to produce a limited quantity of both this knife and my outback model in kit form as, since running down production of Japanese swords, I find more time to concentrate on bushcraft and hunters. I will be presenting both the Bushcraft and suvival magazine and the UK knife show, an anniversary M1 model for prizes in thier competitions/raffle. I will be in attendence at the UK knife show in May and should have a good selection on show.

I'll be sure to keep you all in the picture, I have a couple of other knives to do at the moment though hence the thread for my new sheaths.
I think I have gone over the brink especially since I have started new projects in John's workshop!

I too have a couple of projects on the go at the mo. A few knives and an interesting project intended for a 'Help for heroes' auction, a charity close to both our hearts. After that i an embarking on a very special pair of knives that i intend to keep after handling and sheathing. More on that later.
