Neck sheath?

I am curious as to why people call the WL sheath with a firesteel loop a neck sheath?

Said design was in use by Native American peoples and Mountain men 100's of years ago and is designed to be worn on a belt with the belt passing over the sheath thus trapping sheath and knife between body and belt - ideally to prevent knife falling out (it really was your life in those days) and to prevent an enemy drawing it during hand to hand combat.

Neck sheaths on the other hand generally are design to hang vertical i.e along the sternum - such designs were common as cleavage knives worn by late medieval ladies and again Native warriors, but these were generally small bladed and of total utility use - not for fighting.

I am too. It's more an "over the shoulder" bladrick style sheath because really the package is too heavy and cumbersome for neck wear.

I'm not sure why "neck" sheaths have become so popular recently. I think in part is is a PC issue - there is a limit to the size of knife you can hang around your neck! No big bowie style knife is gonna be practical that way. Also, a knife on the belt may look more threatening nowadays.

I agree with what you say about it being a PC issue, it is far easier to wear a knife discreetly with a neck sheath. Also, I’m more conscious of where the knife is with a neck sheath and notice straight away the weight difference of it not being in the sheath when I’m using it and hopefully less chance of putting it down and forgetting it. When I did used to wear a relatively small knife in a belt sheath, it has on occasion drawn quite nervous looks from people when I’ve bumped into them in the woods.
