    Default Sami and RM

Please dont come down on me like a ton of bricks because its a what was ray wearing type of question.

On boxing day i was watching a ray mears dvd with my mother.
It was one where Ray was with the sami tribe and he was also fishing through an ice hole.

    Here comes the question.

My mother liked the artic coat he was wearing whilst filming that episode and requested me to find out where she could get one?

    Here comes my reasoning.

My father passed away at the begining of this present year at the young age of just over 50
he owned his own woodland and brought me along with what was called fieldcraft in his day.
He met ray a few times on certain forays in the woodland and admired ray very much and i belive my mother holds ray mears in high regard because of my fathers interests.

Well i best cut it short because i do tend to ramble.
If anyone can help me with what coat it was or where i can purchase one then i would be forever greatfull as i would love to get my mother this coat before the anniversary of my fathers death.

If by any remote possiblity some one has one for swaps then please let me know what you would like for it.

Sorry for the slighty rambling post but ive spent all day searching for this via google etc.

    Once again sorry and thanks.

I can't help, but have you tried e-mailing Woodlore directly? They may be able to help.

In his bushcraft book, next to a photo of that jacket he says:
My own windproof outer layers are made of ventile - A single-layer fabric trouser and a double-layer anorak with a fur hood.
maybe check out westwinds / snowsled ?
...are you sure I only need 1 ?

Cheers for all your help on this guys

Ive emailed woodlore to see if they can help and ive checked out westwinds and snowsled and its not in there range.

Im starting to get the feeling that it may be a one off specially made for ray.

It might be a 'one off' but it looks like its made along the lines of a traditional Sami parka (to me anyway)

Its the braid around the bottom edge I suppose

One of those should be easy enough to knock up. The braid around the cuffs and the bottom is tablet weaving. Anyone competent at making Viking living history clothes should be able to make one easily.

I've just had a good look around, and the nearest I can find for you is these.

First one is The Arctic Anorak
and the second one is The Permafrost Parka

Neither is exactly what you are looking for, so I suspect Ray had his made for him.

    Thankyou Eric

Its very kind of you to help with the links like that.
They are the closest to rays coat that ive come accross so far.
Maybe i am going to have to get as many pictures of him wearing that coat as possible and get someone to make one for my mother although i cant see it being cheap.

I would also like to say thanks to everyone else who has contributed to this thread and contcted me via pm.

This site is full of lovely people.

You know, I'm sure I've heard something about him wearing Snowsled Ventile for cold weather. I know people have checked and said they don't do the right one but perhaps it's a now discontinued item? He does tend to hang on to the same kit for years (much like all of us I s'pose )

Put snowsled into the search function and loads comes up. Somebody asked Ray where he got the jacket from and he said he was told that he had it made especially for him. A lot of info comes up on it.

just email him via his website. explaine why you are trying to get one of the jackets, knowing ray he wont get one of his minion to email you he will prob do it himself. another option which is what i would do is to send a letter to him via his company address again explain about your dad etc, think you will be pleasantly suprised. you have nothing to loose.

Hi Still Waters, my thoughts are with both you and your Mum at this sad time. I lost a couple of uncles last year and its those things that people said and the thoughts I that they left me with that helped me get through. I for one would like to read your poem.
    Peace,
    jon

My sincere thanks to everyone who has tried to help or given kind words in this thread.

Tonight i set a fire in the firepit in the garden and toasted my dads life with a few drinks.
It was kind of fulfilling sat by the fire in torrential rain.

From this point on i will no longer be mourning and longing for my dad but celebrating the fact i managed to have time with a great man and its now my turn to pass his teachings on to other people and grow as he would have wanted me too.

    RIP DAD

    Death is nothing at all

I have only slipped away into the next room

I am I and you are you

Whatever we were to each other

    That we are still

Call me by my old familiar name

Speak to me in the easy way you always used

Put no difference into your tone

Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow

    Laugh as we always laughed

At the little jokes we always enjoyed together

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me

Let my name be ever the household word that it always was

Let it be spoken without effort

Without the ghost of a shadow in it

Life means all that it ever meant

It is the same as it ever was

    There is absolute unbroken continuity

What is death but a negligible accident?

Why should I be out of mind

Because I am out of sight?

I am waiting for you for an interval

    Somewhere very near

    Just around the corner

    All is well.

Nothing is past; nothing is lost

One brief moment and all will be as it was before

How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

You are welcome, I lost my dad 7 years ago, my dad, my mentore, my friend, it is hard but I never forget him, when I light a fire and have a beer, he is in my thoughts and my memories flood back at him being with me doing the same. I never know,, he could be doing the same thing somewhere else...
