Tutorial - Making a Honing Strop

I found a great tutorial on making a honing strop, and I wanted to share it with the group - think I'll go and make one myself this weekend!

"Making a strop or hone for your knives and carving tools is simple. You can order a piece of leather from the internet, or just find a leather belt and cut a piece off that is about a foot long. Glue the leather to a piece of wood."

Make two!
Charge one with paste for the first forty swipes, leave the other plain for the second forty stripes.
Scary sharp results!

Better yet, make one as shown and one (or the reverse side to save space and material) with the smooth side of the leather up and extra fine paste for a super smooth polished edge.

Also remember to hold the knife at the same angle as you did on your hone. Don't flip up at the end of the stoke.

Mungo,dont know if this helps but ive worked with the stuff and we called it 'polishing soap'(as aposed to cutting soap which is grey and very abraisive!
i made one of these today backed with a nice bit of mahogany and for paste i used jewelers rouge from the dremmel kit at lidles this week in the UK.i am realy suprised just how good it realy is! you can actually shave hairs of yer arm with my opinel!

Here's a place in NY with all the different compounds. With the current exchange rate these are cheap even in Canada.

Mungo, you are definitely in the Right Place. I buy mine from Canada, from Lee Valley. This is the finest chromium oxide compound I've ever used. It flows smoothly onto a strop and does a heck of a job bringing an edge up to snuff.

This is terrific - I'm going to drop by there after work tomorrow (there's one nearby) and pick some up! Now I just have to find that old belt I put into the basement and get it ready...

Beware the woodworking tools that Lee Valley/Veritas make, after you use one theres no going back.
