    Default Calling

I'd be interested to hear of folks experiences of calling wild animals/birds.

i recently bought a roe call and a CD (figuring that I now have 4 months to practice before the rut ). I saw a video of one in use on a recent course and was mightily impressed. The roebuck came charging in, and very close.

Even more impressive, I understand some people can make their own roe calls, and the very highly skilled can use a leaf.

I've seen buzzards come closer to my son as he tries to imitate their mewing.

Fox calling seems effective too - I'm getting advice from a friend on this one.

Anyone had any luck making/using calls? For any species? Any recommended makes?

I started a small feature on this some months ago but wanted to present it as something for everyone; as in "calling" for the simple enjoyment of watching wildlife as distinct from shooting. This entailed producing a different set of "in the field" pictures that didn’t show a whole lot of dead critters in the foreground so it won’t now be done for a while.

I'm not up on roe calling but for sika the Sceery cow elk models are good and are used by many FCS Rangers throughout the Highlands. Find them here:

“Rattling” for fallow throughout the rut works very well and is great fun!

For foxes you can’t go wrong with this: http://www.burnhambrothers.com/produ...roductID=18642
But then it won’t just be foxes you bring in but all the corvides, owls, green woodpecker, hawks, cows and much more besides including the bl--dy farm dog, which can be a real pain!

Then there are custom calls from the US which can become something of an obsession!

    Happy squalling!

You can confuse cock pheasants by blowing on a blade of grass held between your thumbs. It oftens sets them off until the woods are ringing with their calls. I've also learned to mimick a black bird's call...it's not the big league is it?

That’s right but not so much with sheep or even horses although the latter most certainly have a good look in the general direction. Peacocks sometimes reply too if I hit a bum note! Speaking of which they are one critter that should be fitted with a sound moderator and especially at 03-30hrs on a summers morning!

    Cheers

When I was in Orlando, Florida a couple of years ago I went into a Massive Outdoor World store that had a heavy emphasis on hunting and fishing.

This place is as big than most Tesco stores, and they had a whole aisle given over to animal calls.

The array of kit in the bowhunting section was pretty impressive as well.

Like this kind of thing http://www.shootingbags.co.uk/products_callers_fx5.html at $700!
    I still want one though

    Cheers

Mr Fox is quite a critter! One day a feather fell from the sky. A hawk saw it fall, a deer heard it fall and a badger later smelt it. But only the fox saw, heard and smelt the feather.
