    Default Most unusual place.

Now heres a question for you all. What is the most unusual place you have camped or hammocked, without been seen?
The places I.m thinking of is a small copse in middle of golf course, golfers all around but not knowing your there. A wooded area in the middle of a park. That sort of thing.
At the moment I am thinking about a large ,heavily wooded roundabout near me. Its about a 1/4--1/3 mile across. Haven't done a recce yet, hardest thing will be getting onto it without been seen.
Just fancy something offbeat, a bit of a laugh.
Heres were I get shot down in flames for being irresponsible.

Theres a guy that lives in a gypsy caravan in Cornwall who spends a lot of time on a roundabout.

I slept under a blanket on top of Mount Warning in Australia - does that count?!?

The idea was that we'd be the first to see the sun rise in Oz that day (highest, most easterly point) What we didnt count on was the amount of shooting stars we'd see - literally hundreds. Got a bit boring after 50 or so!!

Not irresponsible i travel around a lot and have often looked at roundabouts and wooded areas on the side of the road and wondered if i could get away with setting up my hammock.

also there are some lovely copses on the gallops at Newmarket race course and i dare say you could get away with a night there without being seen

Okay, Mod hat on here guys.

I'm Scottish, to us there's no problem with what you are suggesting (apart from how desperate must you be to need to camp on a roundabout ) but I suspect that in England, Wales, etc., then what you are proposing is illegal and as such BcUK can not be seen to condone the practice of wild camping on private land.

Please take this post as it is intended and keep the thread responsible.

strangly enough my son "Lost" a radio controled plane in a park just over a mile away from the centre of Bromley , and deep in a small thicket of trees and brush we found a long abandoned "camp" with the remains of a poly tarp , sleeping bag , old clothes and dozens of old empty cans mostly beer ! Thought then how easy it would be to just disapear Ilan

hmmm... I don't think I've ever camped anywhere weird like that.
I did, however, camp in my friend's back garden once though. None of them knew, so it was a bit of a shock for his mother when she came out in the morning to put out the washing and I was in her back garden making toast over a fire. And for the record, there was a spot in their garden where they frequently had barbeques and such, I didn't go messin' up the flowerbed
All will rise again for a better day; earth, green, with waterfalls where eagles hunt their prey

    Default In a lion park

    I kid you not.

When I was a child we lived in Namibia (then South West Africa) for a few years, and we often used to take the car and car camp everywhere. Well, we wanted to see a famous painting of something called the "White Lady," which is a painting of a seemingly white woman holding something that looks much like a wineglass, painted by a people then called bushmen.

On the way there we stopped at this fantastic site out in the middle of nowhere, and I remember watching the moon come up over the mountains and thinking the place was magical.

The next morning a ranger came by asking if we were all right - we were actually not allowed to camp in the area because lions roamed there.

My brothers say there were actually tracks very near where we were but I don't remember seeing them.

Needless to say, we packed up promptly.

The weirdest place i have camped has to be the old ww2 airbase we have just up the road .Its one of those haunted places and i am the only person i know off that has spent the whole night there !! Won the bet mind you .
Not sure about anywhere else , legalitys aside , i would be too worryied about drunk drivers taking shortcuts on a roundabout !

Camping down the Gare Loch just past the Rhu narrows there's a triangular patch of shingle beside an old MOD base. My Dad, my brother & his friend and me. Big old Niger tent. I woke up about 2.30 in the morning and my Dad was sitting on an old bollard, smoking his pipe, watching a mirror calm tide line creep closer and closer to the tent guylines. The dory wasn't even moving on it's tether it was so still. Checked the almanac; an hour and a quarter to the Spring tide turn....hmmmm.
We quietly rolled up the tent sides. When the water hit the guylines we rolled up the tarp over the other Toddy and Jim and gently nudged them to the back of the tent.....still sound asleep. Brewed up the primus, had tea and a choc digestive .
The tide line stopped dead centre in the middle of our tent, left a soft line of seaweedy gunk and gently slid back out again. We rolled down the tarp, complete with the boys still asleep, tied down the tent sides and went back to bed. Seaweed is surprisingly comfortable to sleep on

In Scotland it's fine; responsible access, courtesy and all that goes with it. Respect farmland, riparian interests, etc.,

I don't know about South of the border. I believe a lot of the foreshore is Crown Estates though.

There must be someone on the forum who is really up on land use, or knows of a good clear link to the necessary legal information.

Fishing rights, from netting to angling and farming. I think it also covers things like reed beds for harvesting too in some areas.

Overnight in a disused police station and five nights in an old coastal fort. Like Cap'n Badger "the joy of youth".

    Default dead weird PLACE!

Over two nights in a pile of lorry tyres, while waiting for a pal to drive down to Cornwall with a spare head for my bike. The tyres were stacked end to end and formed a tube. I put a cardboard box across the gaps and slept there for two nights in the pouring rain, snug as a bug. Twas dry and warm as well, but I could not get any of the local ladies to join me though.... funny that.

Sandsnakes... oh the joys of youth!

Riparian rights basically cover who owns the shore line and river banks, ownership of a river bank usally goes to half way out into the river. Riparian ownership goes back to Roman law and covers such problems as - if Marcus' top soil washes away and is dumped on your land does it belong to you or Marcus?

    yadda yadda

I think the most unusual place I ever slept was in a reastraunt - I'm not sure how it happened.

How does that deal with river transport or passage? Up here I can canoe/ sail pretty much anywhere and can put in or take out, again responsibly, etc., the same.
Is that different too from England and Wales & Ireland?

The strangest place I`ve had my hammock up is in a Trolley point at Cribbs shopping centre carpark in Bristol, my 6 year old nephew and I camped overnight waiting for the first Harry Potter book to come out a few years back. The trolley park signs made excellent substitutes for trees - although the security gaurds didn`t think so ! They drew the line at open fires though so we had to ring my sis-inlaw to bring down my coleman stove.
