Drain holes in leather sheaths

Is there any advantage to putting a drain hole in the bottom of a leather sheath? :?: Every other sheath I have drains water effectively except my leather ones.

Wouldnt the leather just soak it up?
Thats why you should always dry your knife before putting it into your sheath.

Not if the sheath is well impregnated with wax and maintained. That means impregnated on both the inside and outside. I usually leave a bit of room below at the end of the edge rest (if that makes sense), to give moisture a way of escaping. So drilling a small hole would not be a bad idea.

I'm more thinking about rain and getting a soak rather than sheathing a wet knife. But yes, dry a knife before sheathing it.

Oops, sorry for my useless advice Adi!

I always have my knife under a layer of clothing unless it is hot (and rain is unlikely) so my sheath would rarely get wet.

Some norwegian leathersheaths for working knives have a drainhole at the bottom. It works very well for draining water and debris from plants etc
