    Default GPS fun and learning

    Hi Folks,

    I just found this site...

    http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache...8-5453186faa06

Basically, if you have a GPS it is a way of doing a treasure hunt...A container such as an AMMO BOX is buried with a log book in it...The co-ordinates are then published on a website and members have to go find the cache...small items can be left in the tin like a business card...you then fill in the log book with details about yourself...A good way of learning to use your system and a fun day out with all the family...

I have noted that this has been mentioned by others in various forums going back over 12 months...but didn't see any links or descriptions...so sorry if this is a repeat...LS

Top stuff, thats a great idea (personally I prefer the old map and compass but like you say, it would teach you how to use it).

Does anyone remember the map and compass challenge on Dartmoor (I think). You basically had the same idea as mentioned above. A gold coin or similar was placed in an ammo box and buried on Dartmoor, you got a map from a local shop and then had to follow point to point to locate the said box. The challenge was very diffiuclt as there were no features to relate to, you had to pace everything out abd be very exact. I can never recall anyone finding it when I was based down that way.

More than you could possibly want to know about Letterboxes on Dartmoor. Geocaching is similar, but without a map it's not unusual to find yourself just yards away from a cache, but on the wrong side of a cliff/river etc (not that I'm talking from personal experience your understand ). There are things I don't like about geocaching, but one good thing about it is that if you are staying in a new area it gets you out and about, often exploring places you wouldn't otherwise know to seek out.

Thats the carrot....but I remember something to do with the Queens prize (hence the gold coin etc), maybe I have imagined it??

There was also the "masquerade" book, with the "Golden Hare" as the prize...
