    Default source of leather?

Its time I made my knives proper sheaths, but dont know where to get the leather from. The only on-line supplier I have found is http://www.leprevo.co.uk/index.html which seem to be ok for tools but what leather do I need and how much. Will I have to buy 10 square foot?

    Cheers

    hello
I've read that laprevo are good and they are often recommended both here and on british blades as a leather supplier. Apparently they are very helpful if you phone and should be able to help with both advice and smaller amounts to meet your requirements.
If you run a search you wil find a few threads about making your own sheaths or about leatherwork and if you go and check out british blades (there is a link in edged tools) there is a whole section dedicated to leatherwork which is full of useful info.
I haven't done any sheathmaking, yet, so i probably shouldn't even be responding, but i think you want 3 to 4 mm veg tan.
If you run a quick search, i'm sure you will find all you need to know and more.
    cheers and hope this helps

Give Leprevo a call and they will sort you out they are very helpful tell them what you want the leather for and they will get you the right stuff (it should be about 3-4mm thick if I remember).

It might be worth talking to the best London-based supplier of leather as they always have plenty of great stuff in their off-cut bins. Even better if you could get down to their lock-up (near Highbury football ground) and have a rummage yourself. You will be truly amazed at the range of hides they have.

No web site that I know of but contact details as follows:

    J.T. Bachelor & Son
    9 - 10 Culford Mews
    London
    N1

The Identity Store in Northampton sell all of the Tandy gear, it's a great shop if you can get there - but if not they do mail order. There is a website but no online ordering, best to give them a ring and tell them what you're after and they'll sort you out, or request their cataloge and have a look through.

I've just ordered some veggie tan from brisa, they specialise in knife bits so they're ideal, only downside is they're i sweden and charge 10 Euros P&P so its only a good idea if your gonna buy a few bits and bobs aswell. That said they sell the threads and tools needed for sheath making aswell. I only went on there for some leather and a firesteel and spent the best part of £60
