A few days ago after many repairs to the chip board carcass, our couch gave up the ghost.

My brother and I entered a titanic battle with it from the front room, through the door were it nearly notched up a win against us and out onto the front yard where after many oaths it was finally defeated ( only just).

My brother wiping sweat from his brow casually said " lets take it down to the pile" ( A place on our yard where we burn things). After seeing me look at him as if he were mad he rolled his eyes muttering something about bushcrafters and possibles pouches coming out of somewhere that I didn't quite catch and said he would see me later.

So I proceeded to claim my prize and after an hour and a half of stitch picking and getting speared by staples ( the old thing had a bit more fight in it after all) I ended up with this pile:

So apart from pouches and covers is there anything else you folks make with thinner leather?

atb
Oh yeah I made two sheaths for my splitting axes (blue: Muller red: Ochsenkopf nice price vs quality stuff, the steel is good (which is not always the case with those painted axes, but the bad steel ones are often very cheap) I like the brown sheath on the right.

After watching Chisellers video on my last bucksaw i decided to have another go and change a few things. This one is also made from oak that's been stained and sanded a few times to age it. The windlass doesn't protrude below the cross piece anymore i cut a slot into the cross piece and carved the windlass to sit in it. The windlass was left slightly long on purpose so the the cord pushes it down to stop it popping out.
I carved the runes in and they stand for earth, air, fire and water. I may carve some more in yet. The joints are also tighter in this one and i added leather and antler to the tops of the handles for show. The grips took alot of carving and sanding, they give a good grip with no sharp edges. The long thinner piece of oak is a blade protector. the blade will be held in place by some leather thong and antler toggles.
The blades longer on this one, it was 21 inches on the last one and this time it's a 24 inch bahco peg tooth blade.
I used Lime wood, Mora 120 and 164. I am quite satisfied with the finished spoon (it still needs some oil), but now I realize that it is too straight to use it comfortably. But as this is my first spoon and for sure not the last one there will be enough opportunities for such improvement!
"A specialized art and craft event with a difference, dealing solely in wood. For those with a capacity for wonder it will be a celebration of wood work and wood workers"

It was the first time we'd been and it was fabulous; I've got neck ache from constantly being drawn to look at something new. I can also report that spoon carving was very well represented; and I was quietly pleased to note that a couple of my efforts would not have disgraced the show.

If it is within reach of you and you haven't been then I'd put it in your diary for next year.

Looking around the other day for an idea for a present for a 50th. I've been invited to tomorrow, I gathered up a whole bunch of stuff that's been sitting in the " oh great! I'll use that for something nice " pile.................got a nice stand from a piece of Ivy root and carved a little spoon to fit it from an old bit of Walnut; That'll make a nice present............

Then I remembered a piece of antler I got from Tengu (thankyou), got another piece from the pile and combined them with a nice piece of Yew root I got a year or so ago from an old quarry nearby, to make a little stand for a knife I had a while back from juttle (thankyou).
