Recently i have moved over from day shifts to night shifts
this has presented me with more idle time when at work as once the job lists are done and between my quarter hour checks on the folk who live here i am free to do as i please as long as i stay awake,
obviously i spend a fair while mooching around the internet on forums and so on but i have decided to make the most of the free time and do some projects that have been on hold since the birth of my son(nearly a year old now where does the time go once you become a parent?)
most of my projects are leather based so i decided to put together a travel leather working tool kit
and here it is

pouch i traded for
two Awls one from tandy and the other my great great grandfathers
stitch marker and different spaced wheels plus ickle screwdriver to replace them
groove cutter
block of wax
black shotgun cartridge case holds glovers needles and saddlemaker needles it also holds the removeable parts of the other tools and the ickle screw driver
small pliers to grip needles with
white shotgun cartrdige case holds some artificial sinew and braided cord both wrapped around match stick reels and the needles i am currently using

this pouch could easily be transferred from wandering to work to lurking in my pack for longer trips where i may wish or need to be able to do some leather work

I have a very old Awl it belonged to my great great grandfather who was an expert cobbler.
unfortunately it is starting to look its age (aren't we all) and has developed a massive split in the wooden handle (its always had this split as long as i have had it.)
i don't want to retire it as i get a certain satisfaction using a tool that has a family history with it but i would like to repair the handle
here are some pics of the damage

the split is on both sides

Has anyone got any suggestions as to ways i can repair the Awl so it can still be used?
Thanks in advance

I have 26 of them and have uploaded them to my youtube page here bushblades youtube I've not seen them available anywhere else, its a shame as I feel they are some of his best tv work, and I dare say started a lot of us off on the bushcraft path back in the early 90's.
For some reason I was not able to post in the origional threads so I started this new thread.

Hi folks,on my other post http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=91048 i was asked if i would do a tutorial for these things. So i thought i would give it a go.

Well what you will need is a slender Willow shoot of about 80cms long and a knife, which you don't really need to use,as you could just use your thumb nails instead, and tape measure, but again not really necessary.

Now you take the shoot, and split it from the thin end.

Once the split is started, lay down your knife and grab the shoot, like the pic below.
As you pull the two parts apart, one side will want to run off, getting thinner as it moves down the shoot, until it becomes so thin that it tapers out.
So the secret to keep the split in the centre is to watch the split, and if it starts to go off centre, all you do is bend the thicker side more, and then the split will re-centre itself. I hope thats clearer than mud.

Split the shoot all the way down, but leave about 4cms intact.

Now turn the split shoot on its side.

Now we start to make the figure.

So,we bend the unsplit end down, this will be the figures back leg.

Then measure about 5cms along from the back leg, this will be the spine of the figure. Next take the uppermost split and bend it down to start the front leg.

Now measure up with your eye and bend this split,(making sure that its the same length as the back leg), back up on itself, bark facing out,to finish off the front leg. You will now have the split sticking up vertical. This we will use later.

Next we will create the body by using the other piece of the split, which will be sticking out horizontally. Now bend this part of the split around the front leg,all the way to the back.

Keep on wraping around to create the body. If you run out of the split then simply push the loose end into the previous row to secure. But most of the time you will have some of the split left, what to do then,is take it back around the front leg,and wrap it up around the body.

Keep wraping, then fold the loose end into the body.

Then trim any loose ends.

Well thats the body complete. This is what it should look like.

Now its time to turn our attention to making the neck and head.

Taking the vertical split measure about 4cms from the shoulder, then bend the split back down.

Then fold it under the body and bring it back up onto the other side. Here we have got the neck made.

So now we make the head. With the split now at the top of the neck,we create a figure 4,which gives us the head shape.

Now bring the split back around the neck, and start to wrap around the figure 4 to fill in the head.

Wrap all the way up the head, then around the neck. Then just push the last piece of the split into the neck to secure.

Last of all trim to make neat.

And now the finished product.

Well i hope that makes some sense, and is of help to some folk.
Thanks for looking Stuart.

Well I've recently managed to find who is responsible for looking after and maintaing my local woodland as detailed in my hiking post. After browsing their website I enquires about volunteering to be a countryside manager which just involves keeping local trails in good order and helping to remove fallen trees etc.

I was wondering if anyone else works or volunteers ina similar capacity that can give me some advice on doing this from their experiences.

I have my induction next Thursday and upon clearance of CRB and qualifying criteria I will be able to say I have an official capacity in keeping my local woodland and trails maintained.

Id like to hear of anymore experiences.

The cut out in the cap/dome or whatever the technical term is came about, because the wood was very soft and brittle. It just broke away when i was carving it.But i think it gives a more natural look. The wood that i used was a peice of birch.
