View Full Version : Extended Giant Seat Meet In September

Hi Guys
I was talking to a few of the regulars at Giants seat over the weekend, the general consensus` was that the weekend wasn't really long enough to do the things they wanted to do.
So the next giants Seat will be an extended meet from DATES CHANGED to 25th- 30th of September of September, we will be having at least one work day to improve the site and are planning some skills sharing sessions on the other days after the success of Alan's Trauma care session on Saturday of the last meet (thanks Alan)
We are also looking at doing a bring and buy type of event on one of the days where people can bring products that they going spare or have even made themselves to flog on to the other members.
I would like to start a list of people that will be attending below copy and paste as usual.
If you cant make the entire meet that's fine if for example you can only come for the weekend just add the dates that you can make next to your name in the list.
Also if people could put down the things they would like learn i can see who is available with the relevant skills and cajole them into doing a session.
Hopefully as this is a longer meet we might entice some of the people further afield to come and enjoy this fantastic site and join us on some of the workshops.
Please ad your names, dates and preferred topics in the format below
I will try to get all popular topics covered but if we don't have anyone with the skills c`est la vie.
Thanks Dave
Please take a second to read the rules below

About the Site
The site is a functioning scout camp, we are lucky enough to have built a great relationship with the warden and are pretty much given free reign.
There are 10,000 standing Tree’s majority Oak although there are birch and beech on the site as well as a few others.
There is a VERY large field that can be used for tents etc. this is flanked by woods on both sides. Also at the bottom of the field is another wooded area ALL of which is scout land. The boundary on the left (looking down the field with Martin Lodge behind you) is the stream. On the right the boundary is the road that runs towards the garden centre. At the bottom the boundary is where the rail track meet the Motorway. The site as a whole covers 54 acres, so there is no issue with space.
There is a fully functional Shower block with 3 electric showers, sinks, urinals and 5 toilets. There is also access to drinking water on the site.
There are a few rules that need to be followed to allow us all to have a good time without damaging the relationship that we have built Please take a few mins to read through this post to familiarise yourselves as failure to adhere to these rules may mean you being asked to leave the site
Thanks in advance
Dave Bromley

Thanks guys and i look forward to seeing you there
Dave
Dave Bromley - entire meet - friction firelighting, firecraft, sourcing natural materials and map & compass work.
yes I'd like to go to this. Hoping to get a biolite camping stove so that I can charge my phone this time as not having it last time caused all sorts of problems for me on the way home from the site!
Thanks for your well wishes following my being driven into last Sunday. I am recovering well, wish I could say the same about my bike!
When do you think the pictures from the last giant seat meet will be uploaded? I'm looking for them but have terrible problems finding anything on this site, Alan had to find the giant seat meet details for me and therefore as a result I rarely use it.

Hi Theresa
Glad to hear you are feeling better, glad to hear also that nobody was hurt too badly!
The pics from the last meet are here (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94486)
and these dates may have to be amended now as the warden of the site has said we might not be able to stay until the Sunday (despite already approving the dates and confirming by email) I'll keep you updated as i get a reply to my last email
Thanks

RIGHT
This has been rescued, but the dates have changed. The dates are now 25th - 30th of September and as before come for as long or a little as you can.
I am going to speak to some of the members and see of they will be willing to do some skill sharing across the week and when i have more information i will post an itinerary so people can plan their stay around elements that they want to cover.
If anyone is willing to do any skill share sessions please contact me via PM so that we can discuss it further.
Thanks

Hi guys,
I'm fairly new to Bushcraft, but by no means a complete novice. Would there be any issue with me attending this meet, probably from the Thursday or Friday, to the Sunday? It would be great, especially since I know nowhere near me, Fallowfield, that I can practice in.
Thanks,
Matt

Hi,
Enjoyed the BushMoot this year and looking forward to meeting more bushcraft peeps & advancing my knowledge / skills.
Paul Ross - entire meet - map & compass - First Aid - Archery - Wild food forage - Tracking
I'll probably be cycling from Chorlton, but if there is a lift share or people want to cycle together - Great!
Also is it possible to invite non-BCUK members but have an interest in Bushcraft?
DaveBromley
10-09-2012, 17:03
Hi Guys absolutely fine to come along no matter what level of knowledge you have. Guests are also welcome although the member that brings them is responsible for them, If their behavior is unacceptable they will be asked to leave as may you dependent on what they have done and if you could have prevented it. They also need to play an active role, so if they expect to be warmed by the fire they have to help gather the wood etc.

Thanks for the info regarding inviting guests.

Also, what is the best way of getting there from fallowfield, or Piccadilly?
DaveBromley
11-09-2012, 16:40
That would be fab if you dont mind matey
The majority of the folks will undoubtedly turn up on the Friday and stay over the weekend, so if we put the skill shares down for the Saturday i think that would be perfect.
Friction Fire lighting is always a boon and i think everyone will enjoy having a go!
Let me know if there is anything i can do to help out
Dave
As always I'm willing to share any knowledge I have.

Right, I'm coming. It's settled!
Hopefully I can put forward some good insights based on what I know, and would be more than happy to give some instruction on paracord uses, including constructing bracelets, and knots.
Does anyone have any tips on getting there from Piccadilly, or fallowfield, and what do people suggest for food, taking into account that I'm a vegetarian?
Cheers

You can get a train from Piccadilly to Kearsley, then down the steps & under the bridge to the bus stop and a bus to the White House at the end of the lane to the site.
Alternatively you can get the tram to Whitefield and take the bus the opposite way to the White House.
AFAIK the Kearsley - Whitefield bus doesn't run Sundays.
Here's a couple of useful links ...

If you use the journey planners, use the postcode M26 1DZ, and the location Greenside Farm, Ringley Road West, which is the nearest bus stop to the site track.

Vegetables.......(sorry couldn't resist)
Depends how long you're coming for, if its only the weekend you can afford to eat as you like. If coming for the entire meet then you will more than likely want to think more carfully due to the weight issue. There is an asda about 10 mins drive away not sure how that translates to walking though.
I will be taking mostly dried and tinned food such as past/rice and tinned veg and meat, i will also be taking a speckling of fresh food i.e. some fruit, veg and some meat like bacon etc

It's not as though Giant's Seat is the trackless wilderness. There's a convenience store or two in Kearsley (abt 2') , there may be one closer, and there's supermarkets in Farnworth (abt 3').

Hi there, I'd really like to come to this meet if you'll have me. I had a great time at the moot (my first one) and would like to practice my campcraft and bushcraft skills some more.
I do a fair bit of camping but I've ended up going fairly heavyweight (eg. van full of milsurp gear), I've been inspired to downsize and hope to rely mostly just on what I can carry.
I'd be happy to do a veggie curry if we're doing group cooking. If anyone is bring a potje I'd quite like to have a go at baking bread.
I do have a some newbie questions about the camp shall I just PM Dave ?
Cheers, Andy

What are your questions? Best to put them on here rather than PM as other may have the same questions as Gary says.

Well the rains kept me in this arvo so here's a few q's. How far is the walk-in, as well as personal kit on my back, I'll bring a canvas tarp and other cooking kit/extra food/water if access from my van is feasible. Re. the fire, what's the crack with wood ? I often bring extra wood 'just in case' when going to unknown camps but again only if near the van. I can bring a chainsaw if needed (have the ticket). Oh yeah I take it we don't share a latrine so will make my own plans ? :-)

Hi chaps
in answer to Cahrlifoxtrot's questions:
* there is a carpark on the site that is about 100 yards fro the woods, however the woods are pretty big and as such the walk can vary. We normally set up quite close to the carpark so not far to take kit etc.
*Wood - there is plenty on dead standing wood about, most can be collected as deadfall. The offer of the chainsaw is nice but without organising with the camp as to which trees can go and which should stay etc. we can't really take anything unless its dangerous to leave it. however if you want to bring your own supply noone will argue lol
*Toilets - there is a toilet block onsite that offers urinals and 5 flushing loo's (also power showers!!) so latrines wont be needed.
Hope this answers your questions
Any others let me know

Hey,
I noticed that on the rules for the July meet it says no ground fires. Does that still stand? Also, seeing as there are toilet facilities and the like, is there access to drinking water too?
Cheers
DaveBromley
20-09-2012, 13:52
Hi Merrygold
Yeah the rules for ground fires still stand, the ground is made up of compacted leaf mold. so all fires need to be off the ground, there are hearths dotted around the place though so these can be used also.
There is also drinking water on the site (tap on the side of the toilet block)
Thanks Dave

Much to my regret I have to bow out of this one at this late stage. :( I am quite disappointed as I was really getting excited about it.
Fortunately it is for a good reason. On Saturday I managed to bag myself an allotment. This allotment hasn't been used in a while and I need to put a lot of work in up front or I could lose it. With the failing light I am reduced to working on it at the weekend, meaning I need this weekend to get a start on it. Some other good news is that we are actually encouraged to have fires on our plots, so I can practise some bow drill and stuff, yay.
So I am afraid it'll be a while before I can catch you guys.
