View Full Version : Sussex Bushcraft Group: Febuary Meet on 25th/26th

It's time to set up another meet, so I am starting off a new thread. Dates are always hard to choose so I have settled on the 25th/26th of Feb. The usual rules & regs are below:

Location of the Campsite & details of the Venue
Broadstone Warren is a Scout site situated in the Ashdown Forest in the North of Sussex, midway between the South Coast and London. The site which is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) comprises 386 acres of the Ashdown Forest with campsites situated throughout the woodland in many of the glades.

How to get there
http://www.broadstonewarren.org.uk/find_us/ (http://www.broadstonewarren.org.uk/find_us/)

By Road
From the M25 - Leave the M25 at junction 8 following the M23 southbound towards Brighton. Leave the M23 at junction 10, and take the first exit on the roundabout along the A264 towards East Grinstead. When you get into East Grinstead, follow the A22 southbound towards Eastbourne. Remain on the A22, straight through Forest Row. Broadstone Warren is on the left-hand side approximately 2 miles south of Forest Row.

From the South - Follow the A22 northbound crossing the crossroads at Wych Cross (just after the Roebuck Hotel). The main entrance is approximately 500 metres after the junction on the right-hand side.

SAT-NAV - If using Sat-Nav, the postcode for the site is RH18 5JS. As you get close to the site, you need to look out for the signs as the same postcode is used for a number of local properties.

By Rail: The nearest train station is at East Grinstead, which is approximately a fifty minute train journey from London Victoria. When arriving at East Grinstead Broadstone Warren is a bus journey or ten minute taxi ride away.

By Bus: Bus services pass Broadstone Warren from East Grinstead, Uckfield and Haywards Heath.

Times & Booking In
You can stay the Friday night if you want, although the main meet starts on Saturday Morning & normally goes to late afternoon on the Sunday. When you arrive on site, please park in the Rangers' car park and check in at the ranger's office, then go directly to our pitch.

Fees
We have managed to get the discounted day rate of £4.74 (which is £3.95 + VAT). Please note that this is charged on a 24 hour baises , so if you arrive on the Saturday & leave on the Sunday after being there for more than 24 hours then you need to pay for 2 days. Sorry but that is their rules.

Pitch: To be decided. Will probably be D1E again, as most people seem to like that & it's good for the chute

What we do at the meets
This is an opportunity to meet some local(ish) Bushcrafters, camp out with like minded people & practice/learn some skills. We have had a handful of these meets before, some at other venues, but they mostly follow the same pattern. We tend to do as much or as little as you want but try to have a few sessions where anyone can take part if they want; these are usally things like different ways to make fires, carving, tree id etc.. We cook on the shared fire, often having a communal meal & have tea on the go all the time. We have a few beers round the campfire in the evening but tend not to stay up too much past midninght as others are ofetn asleep by then & we tend to get up early when you wake up in the woods, usually round 7 (although some sleep on for a bit).

The other important stuff
WATER: Standpipes are located at various points around the site.
FIREWOOD: There is ample wood for burning lying around the forest. Under NO circumstances is live wood to be cut or damaged. Chain saws are NOT permitted on the site. (NOTE: I have not yet verified the availability of wood, so if you have access to any, it may be worth bringing some wood or charcoal with you)
PITS: Due to the nature of the ground on site NO pits of any type may be dug.
VEHICLES: NO vehicles are to be driven onto the campsites or parked on the rides other than with the Duty Manager’s permission. On arrival you may be allowed to unload your equipment at your site after which you must park your vehicle in the car park allocated. At the end of your stay, after receiving the Duty Manager’s permission, you will be allowed to take your vehicle to your site to load up your equipment.
CYCLES: To comply with the Forestry Commissions Laws and Natural England, cycles are NOT permitted on the site.
DOGS: NO pets of any description are allowed on site. Sorry but that is the site rules.

NOISE / NUISANCE: As the consideration for other users is paramount, music players, radios and the like must not be audible off your own site. Noise must be kept to a bare minimum between 11pm and 7.30am. Unacceptable behaviour by any users on site will not be tolerated. Unacceptable behaviour includes: Bad language; Trespassing; Vandalism; Consumption of alcohol by minors/excessive consumption by adults; Illegal substance use; Setting fires (with the intent to cause damage); Acting in a way that may cause danger to self or others; Verbal, Emotional, Physical or Sexual Abuse
SECURITY: In the interest of security we would recommend that you do not leave any valuables in tents or buildings.
RUBBISH: Recycling facilities for glass, cans and tins are located at Camp Centre. Please clean all glassware, cans and tins before disposal. All combustible rubbish, where practicable should be burned. All other rubbish should be brought to camp centre and placed in the bins provided, or taken home for disposal.
FIRE: Fire is to stay within the main fireplace, unless people are being taught how to make fire under appopriate adult supervision. This is mainly aimed at kids, as we need to be careful where embers land away from the main fire for obvious reasons. This excludes personal hobos, gas cookers which are the owners responsability when operating.

* Forum members are responsible for themselves, the kit they use and their own actions (and any non member accompanying them)at the Meet.
* Under 18's must be accompanied by at least one parent (or appointed guardian).
* In the highly unlikely event that I need to make use of this ... I reserve the right to stop any individual(s) from attending a Meet. Any individual(s) who I feel endanger our future use of the site will be required to leave the site; outstanding fees will still be owed. This also applies if the site staff have problems with an indevidual. Nothing like this has ever happened but we need to have the standard disclaimer, like those found at other meets.

Hope to see you round the campfire soon

Good to to see the names being added to the list. Picking a weekend is always difficult but it has to be done. It will be different without a chute but I am sure we will get by.

Neumo
05-02-2012, 23:36
Neil is thinking of us doing a meet where we park some distance away and walk in with less kit than we normally bring, so no ducth ovens on that one. It will be good to make us think a bit more about what we really need to carry for a 1 or 2 nighter. Sounds like fun and will be something a bit different for those who want to take part. Will probably happen in a few months time.

Certainly, as long as you carry the contents (I've got a Bergen you can borrow) ;)

Neil1

We talked about it at the Xmas meet - and decided it would be a little fun. A chance to try a different range of skills (navigation, foraging, etc) and "strip it back" to what it should all be about - carrying less by knowing more!
We could meet at Broadstone on Friday night, then on Saturday take a couple of cars to a start point a few miles away. Then make are way back to Broadstone - but Saturday night you can only use what you have carried in during the day.
We could do it in the warmer months if you like - so you won't have all the extra clothing etc, to carry and could get by with a lighter, smaller sleeping bag. In the summer months this could be done with little more than a bushmans "swag" (tarp, blanket & billycan).
It was just a suggestion and will just be a little "bimble" (not the rigours of "selection" or anything akin to that).

Hmmmm... weren't there only about 5 of you there? I'd be in trouble if we couldn't drive up to D1... ;)

Neil1
06-02-2012, 22:53
Four to be precise! Driving to D1! - I think my point is proved Robin. The only kit that comes up by viechle is my "group-kit" (the chute, table and iron ware), my personal bergen has all the bits in to live quite happily with (and I can fit through a standard sized door while wearing it).

Bear would'nt have a tent!! He'd probably rock with nothing but his "survival thong"!

I did manage to carry everything I took last time in one go (for a short distance) but that included chair, woodburning stove, jerry can, Kelly kettle, large box of kindling, underquilt, extra sleeping bag, bowsaw... none of which I'd need in the summer.

The first time I camped out I walked in but I've grown to love my creature comforts since... ;)

We should think about a group meal again, as that was great fun last time. Maybe if we all bring some meat, veg, potatoes etc.. then we can do a big stew or something. I really want to have a go at that Trash Can Turkey way of cooking, but would probably do it with a large chicken. Want to make some more bread if I can get the yeast to rise. looking forward to this one.

So shall I bring the bin again? Not had a chance to make any more charcoal yet so we'll have to forage some wood.

And the walk in sounds great. How far is the nearest train station? Might make it a bit more of a challenge.

I hope you'll attend bristling with knives, axes & impractical forms of cookware! :)

jackcbr
17-02-2012, 21:25
On the subject of cookware - I've only gone and got myself a Dutch oven. It's only a 4 litre, but thought I might bring it along for a try out and do a lamb stew. Think we've got some home grown neck of lamb in the freezer. Not sure it will feed all of us, but with a trash can chicken too, we might have a meal. Otherwise I can get some chicken thighs and do a chicken casserole in it. Of course you will be taking your life into your own hands as I've never cooked with one before.

Enough innuendo already...

Jackbr: yes if you want to bring the bin that would be good, as I may bring along a large checkin to try cooking in it. It may need a wash before we turn it into an oven. Yes bring your dutch oven along & I will bring mine, as neil wont be there with his mobile kitchen as usual (or the chute).

Looking forward to this one, as may be one of the coldest nights out this year so will be a good test of kit for winter camping.

spandit
20-02-2012, 21:06
Neumo, will your fire grill be coming too? If not, I've got the bottom off an old supermarket trolley I can bring that should do the job nicely

Chicken sounds good as long as we avoid an unpleasant experience that happened to me on a school trip... we were on a sailing boat and the master had his bratty daughter along. A beautiful roast chicken came out of the oven and before I could say anything, the teacher said "my daughter doesn't like the skin" and tossed it into the bin! The best bit! Had to get that off my chest... sorry :)

jackcbr
20-02-2012, 22:49
Cool, trash can it will be! Will try to clean it out, but it is already loaded on the landy and full of logs. Dutch oven too, chicken casserole for as many as I can fit in. I've got a griddle as well, I'm sure we can work a way out to get some heat under it. 2 parallel logs springs to mine.

Hello everyone,

I'd be more than happy to join but it will only be possible for me on Sat 25th in the morning (returning to London on the same day in the evening - I wish I could stay longer). Will it still be ok ? I'll have to come by train since I live in London and don't have a car.
I litterally have almost no bushcraft equipment, is it still possible for me to come (maybe more something like a simple "visitor" :sad6: ? It would be a good introduction for me to Bushcraft since I'm rather a newbie.

Many thks.

p.s. Don't worry when you approach the campsite- everyone will be staring at you. That's because we're nosey. We'll chain Spandit up and you should be ok :lmao:

When you get to Broadstone Warren, go to reception & tell them you're with BCUK. They'll direct you (I presume we're in D1 again which is straight up the hill). Assuming you're coming on Saturday there'll be a few men dressed in a variety of woodland colours sat round a fire with possibly one pretty girl in a pink jacket. Just wander over & say hello. If you can, bring a chair or something to sit on

If i do get there, is there anything else people want me to bring, Bow drill, Net makling gear etc ?, im assuming you will all be up on D1 again, if so do you need another water container or is the water back on now?

Sounds like we will be having quite a busy meet, so am looking forward to this one. Weather should be good by the sound of it, with it only going down to 4C on Saturday night. I have my new hammock to try out, a Warbonnet Blackbird, which should be good; I tried it for an hour last weekend and it looks like it will be the one for me.

Kepis: If you can bring some bow drill or hand rill sets that would be appreciated.

Not sure what we are doing about food but I will probably bring another chicken along as I am liking a roast dinner round the fire these days. Should be along on Saturday morning but might come for the Friday if I can get away.

Am to sure of the pitch as I have been mega busy at work but will call them in the morning & post which one we will be on. If in doubt ask at the office or ask one of the staff.

Looking forward to seeing you round the campfire soon.

Okey dokey, i'll bung a couple of bow drill sets in the car, although it might be more fun to find and make a working set on site?

That would be cool. I'd like to try hand drill too & maybe flint & steel

I'll put my flint & steel in, i have plenty of char cloth made up and have a small amount of Amadou as well, the hand drill is hard work, might be better to leave it until the summer when the ambient conditions would be better suited, ie warm & dry vs. cool & damp, but if you want to try it then i'll bung a few sets in the car.

While i think of it, has anyone got a kettle or do you want me to bring mine (4 pinter)?

Spoken to campsite earlier & we are on D1E as usual; been so busy at work I completely forgot about the paperwork. Will be up in the morning & hope to see you all soon.

I apologised to Jon who said it was all taken care of. Thanks for sorting it out Simon.

Neumo

No the water on D1E is NOT on, so we will have to bring our own containers. I will bring a 5L one & there are usually plenty of others so we will be OK

In honour of Frank Carson: It's a cracker!

We had a great time. Could you please keep the camp fire discussion down to a dull roar next time? Oh, and if you could find another log that is especially shaped to be devoid of any heat at all on my side of the fire that'd be great.

Hugo,

Hope you have warmed up and are okay.

See you all soon.

Sounds like I missed a good laugh on Saturday night although I did enjoy my brief afternoon visit. Good to meet some of you that I hadn't met and some of the new faces too! Will definitely be there for the whole weekend next time.

Another great meet with the usual fine group of people. Learned quite a bit, drank lots of tea, made some forks & a chopping board, so all in all a good weekend. Nice to see a few new faces show up, that will hopefully become regulars. I was pleased that my froe had a busy first proper outing & was going through most things with ease; it needs a new handle but that will be fixed sometime soon. Thanks to everyone for attending & I hope you all had a much fun as I did. Big thanks to Jake for the stew which was good.

We sort of agreed that the next meet will be the last weekend of March, the 24th/25th of March, so I made a provisional booking at the office for & D1E is unfortunately booked that weekend. We can talk about where we want to go when I put the March meet thread up in a bit.

Ditto to all the above. These meets are the highlight of my month. Never known such a friendly atmosphere.

Hugo. I do hope it wasn't the cooking that made you unwell. Kepis, many thanks for the knitting lesson, I'm looking forward to doing some drilling next time.spandit, you truly are one of a kind and for that we are all thankful. And everyone else a big thank you for a top notch weekend. Roll on march (the month, not the walking)

And one final thank you to Our Lord JC. Thank you for providing your bountiful firewood from on high. It did burn bright and hot and consumed the unsplitable log

Thanks Neumo, lucky there wasn't too many of us as my mobile canteen isn't quite up to Neil's standards. But if we all learnt nothing else this weekend, it's that a potato is a vegetable, isn't that right Widu
