View Full Version : someone sent me this beautiful obsidian knife!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/stormbythesea/primitive%20skills/knifefromcharles.jpg
i sent a fellow some gneiss (a metamorphic rock) out of which he wanted to make some knife handles--so he sent me this back.
i'm amazed how polished he got the gneiss, which is a rather grainy rock. i think the blade is green sheen obsidian.
it's perfect...
That is staggeringly gorgeous! How is the blade fitted to the handle?

I first saw an obsidian blade at the wilderness gathering and thought it was a pretty special looking thing but that it just outstanding, pure genius craftmanship. Pretty difficult material to work with as well i believe.
You are a very lucky chappy.
Now that is nice!
A knife to be treasured.

I agree with the others storm.
Whoever knapped that is a veritable artisan and as James said as much as it would be a nice thing to use it would be a shame if if got damaged in use.

Here here.
Its outstanding :Wow:
WOW a stunning piece of fuctional art, who was the craftsman who created that?
I hope you put that image up in the Gallery storm
That is an incredibly beautiful piece of work.
And so generous of the bloke to give you such a stunning gift in return for the rock he needed. A gift like that would just blow me away. Awesome.
It is generosity and the sharing of skills and knowledge like this that attracts me to Bushcraft and this forum.

Very beautiful work.
Truly a work of beauty! :borgsmile
Now that is just stunning. :Wow:
How skillful must the maker be to not only work the obsidian but to do so to such a beautifully balanced shape? :notworthy
Thank you for sharing & do you have photos of other examples? :)

I love obsidian knives they are great to use; it amazes me how efficient they are.
The one in the image is lovely, you must feel privileged to have had it made for you and proud to own it.

Would've posted earlier, but i was too busy drooling.
Wow!
i'll try to answer some of your questions...
the initials on the blade stand for the maker of the piece--Charles Brumbaugh II
he used modern tools to create the blade and handle. i certainly won't be using it--can't chance breaking it. i'm going to include its presentation in my stone age skills programs. all my students will see it.
