Right chaps

Following on from the gauge the interest thread, I have been up to Giants seat today, IT IS MASSIVE!!!!! There is the main field which can hold over 500 tents apparently and then woodland all around. It is the perfect venue for a regular meet, with several streams and the river irwell running through it.

This is a google map of the place (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=53.540129,-2.342534&hl=en&num=1&t=h&vpsrc=0&z=16)

SO i have booked us in for the 17th -19th of Feb, you can arrive any time after 12noon on the Friday and should leave sight by 3pm on Sunday. We are cleared to camp anywhere on the main field or in the woods, we are allowed raised fires.

I know i dont need to say this but will anyway, we need to make a really good impression here so that we will be invited back again so lets all make sure that our common sense gets packed with the rest of out kit!!

Camp Fees are £5 per person per night, there is no wood pile but there is literally a TON of standing dead wood that we have been cleared to use as well as loads of logs that are lying around all over the place

This is the perfect site for any type of camping whether thats hammocking, tenting, or bivvying.

So if you want to come along add you name to the list!!

Well done for checking it out. Some decent dry weather and there's so much to do with so much varied space. Last time i was there the trees were quite well placed for tarps and hammocks..... :-)

Hi, Shaggystu

If you're travelling by train to Manchester, your best bet is to get the train to Picadilly station, and from there get the Metrolink (tram) to Whitefield. It's quicker, and the trams run every 10 - 15 minutes. Whitefield is on the Bury line - make sure you get on the right tram or you could end up very lost.

From Whitefield busses run along Ringley Road West to Outwood about every 20 minutes. Some pass the entrance to the site, but some turn off at the Hare and Hounds, which is about 20minutes walk from the site.

Hope this helps

Hi, Stuart

Sorry, but I put a wrong road name in the directions. I've corrected it now. That's what happens when I try to think, talk, and type all at the same time.

There's a good travel planner for the Greater Manchester area here. (http://www.traveline-northwest.co.uk/journeyplanner/enterJourneyPlan.do?hss=JhklF5 7212765)

This is shaping up to be a great meet!!!

Would anyone be interested in doing any skills share workshops or the like?

I myself would be really interested in

Friction Firelighting
Compass and Map Work (anything as i'm a complete novice)
First Aid (Trauma care etc)
Camp Cooking Tutorials

Just an idea, if people just want to chill out thats fine too lol

Would anyone mind if i were to move the dates to the weekend following the 17-19th? The only reason is that i've just had a job landed on me by work over that weekend, If it means that anyone else can't go i will just have to miss it.

So would it be inconvenient for anyone if the dates were changed to 24th - 26th of feb instead?

Thanks Dave

Count me in please.

MerryGold85 I'll probably be driving from south manchester - should be ok to give you guys a lift. Perhaps closer to the date everyone should try to figure out who we can transport, leave no trace etc should probably extend to 'lets not create a massive car park' eh?

DaveBromley

Glad to see that this seems to be taking off, i think car sharing where possible is a great idea not only to lessen our impact but can create good friendships too!

Hi Dave, I've been digging through my old stuff to see what I've got, some of its from when I was it the RAF, some from when I did re enacting and some stuff I have used when normal camping etc

HM Forces issue tarp, budge cords, tent pegs etc
small groundsheet
self inflating kip mat
HM Forces Sleeping bag
Belgian army bivvy bag

are there plenty of trees for putting the tarp up or will I need poles ?
what about water, is there a tap on site or will I need to bring water with me ?

I haven't got an axe or a saw but presume there will be plenty of dead wood lying about ?

cooker - got an old tiny primus stove or a hexiblock cooker or a meths burner type stove ........not sure what would be best !
lighting - got a UCO 9 hour Candle Lantern, led head torch, couple of hurricane lamps ........not sure what would be best !
pots and pans - various pans, mess tins, crusader cup, spork, kettle etc.........probably just bring the mess tins and crusader cup

clothing ......lots of warm stuff !!!! is it ok to wear DPM waterproofs etc ...I'm not a 'wannabe soldier' honest but the gortex stuff I normally wear for hillwalking cost a bloody fortune and I dont want to knacker it, got some old DPM stuff that's pretty disposable

anything else obvious that I might need !

cheers Martin

Hey Martin,

I don't think we're gonna be too bothered about DPM etc, a fire and a brew are essential - fashion is not on the top of the list.... or I'm stuffed anyway!

the rules are that its no surface fires - is anyone else thinking something like this from Clas Ohlson? http://www.clasohlson.co.uk/Product/Product.aspx?id=167399686

The Ratcatcher

Hi, Martin

The basha and sleeping kit will be fine, and there's hundreds of trees. There's dead wood, but all fires must be off the ground as the leaf mould is several metres deep in places and behaves like peat if it catches fire. A candle lantern and a head torch will be OK, and none of us will say anything about DPM (unless they want to know where you got it from!)

Theres a water point at the toilet block, which also has showers. See you there.

Alan

Hi folks,

I've just been up to Giants Seat this afternoon for another look around, and had a talk with one of the comittee.

We can use any dead wood we find, and there's lots of it, from twigs to full logs. There are a couple of half oil drums in usable condition, and a few brick fire bases in the woodland area which will need clearing out before we use them. Apparently they've not been used for years, so bring some sort of digging tool if you have one.

There will be a tap available for water, and we will have access to the toilets and showers.

The area is a bit wet at the moment, with some snow still lying in the woods, but there are plenty of dry(ish) places for ground dwellers. You might need to be a bit careful when moving around in the dark, as there are some slippery/boggy patches. Other than that the place is OK.

There may be other groups on the site, so we need to make a good impression if we want to use the site again. If you're coming in a vehicle, please be careful when parking as there is only a limited amount of parking space.

The entrance can be hard to spot, especially in the dark. It's on a bend next to a white house called Milestone House. There's a sign for the scout camp which is hard to see if you're coming from Whitefield, but there's a cluster of "For Sale" signs right next to it. Follow the surfaced track to the end then take the left hand gate on to the rough track and follow that to the camp site. Be warned, there's a steep drop on the left as you're coming in towards the site.

This is an open site, as it's far too big to fence off, and a public footpath runs through the area. I will have a map of the area with me for anybody who's interested.

See you all there

Alan
