I think it will, I go out in the wood on my own and do a bit of stealth camping and it is good to have time on your own in the woods, quiet and reflection.
But I do enjoy siting round a camp fire with others, there is nothing like good company a few drinks and waking up in the woods is what I like. That is just my opinion, we all do bushcraft for our own reasons.

Hi guys,

First off, let me apologise for lack of posts this week.

I also live in Ipswich.
I'll be going to the forest tomorrow, long as my car not playing up. Get pictures and hopefully permission for us all. If we do get permission, we should be able to park cars just outside forest.

As for regards for water, far as I'm aware there's no running water, just a nice size pond. If it rains a lot before hand, the stream might be running but recommend you bring some yourselfs.

I have no problems with bows being bought and used but will check with owner first.

Don't know if the guy from Cambridge is reading this thread now, but his more than welcome to come, if everyone else ok with it?

I've managed to book Fri 27th off work, so I plan on getting there around 2pm hopefully?
I can provide lifts if anyone needs?

I'll provide everyone with pictures and instructions in getting there once I know we allow.

If there's any info I've left off at the mo, feel free to ask or pm me.

This will be my first camping trip this year and first without my dog for company lol. Be
Will be nice to have human company for a change lol

Ben, good to read your words on here again. Hope all is well and the land owner is ok with everything. I can nearly smell the camp fire smoke already.
Looking forward to seeing what has to be said in the next day or two.
Thanks for your time

Have thought this myself so have also started organising a 2nd place. My friend works on a farm with lots of land, so she going to ask for us. Worst comes to worst, we'll have to 'sealth' camp for this time. Done it plenty of times without being bothered.

There is nothing wrong with stealth camping as you say Ben.
Just to ask do people want to meet up for a drink prier to the first camp-out, say next week some time, if folks want to?

Yeah I'll keep you updated about the knife/forge, prob will not happen for a couple of months, I got loads to do down the workshop yet, We only moved in in Nov.... been so busy mending my Discovery, my mates Disco, and a few other landys as well. soon get round to experdition prep'ing my disco.

Great to hear so many people say yes to a meet, may I suggest Tuesday 24th as a starting point, just before the first trip out, and it gives some warning, lol.

Now some where easy for people to find, how about the Beagle Ipswich, 8pm, can be got to from town and just off the A12.

Morning lads.

Pub meet fine with me. Place and time. Mate might be coming with as well, both pub and meet.

As regards to getting permission, I've yet managed to get a hold of the land owners, so thinking of writing a letter, just explaining who we are, what our intentions are, duration of stay and leave contact number, asking them to get in contact with me.
Fingers crossed.

Big Stu 12
18-01-2012, 10:12
I'll leave it to the majority, were the meet is, just wanted to get the ball rolling, just thought of a place, that was easy to get to, with loads of parking, as some will be coming from outside of town, I am centre of town myself, also somewere quite were we can sit and chat, and if some one fancy's a bit to eat cause of time, its all there.

I ve just managed to get the afternoon off of Friday 27th, I hope the woods are not a no go, I am all exited, lol. Has anyone else got any suggestions of other sites that we may use as a fall back.

Hi All

I think the only issues is we are going to be a bit hard pressed to do stealth camping with a such large group, unless we have a large woodland to hied in so I would suggest somewhere like Tunstell, Thetford or the other-side of the Debian river past Woodbridge. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Some sort of stealth camping may the the only way we can do it, if the site we are thinking about doing our first night out, something we can chat about when we meet, the only problem I could see is were do we hid the motors, lol, would rather be somewere we can have a fire and not worry about someone giving us a problem.

Cromm
18-01-2012, 22:17
That's the thing really. If there is 9 of us and we are trying to have a chat and meet up in the woods then go off and hide out I don't think it would work but that's my thinking only.
Shame to have us all there and no fire or big laughs going on. I have out laws family who own some woodland that I may be able to get us on. They are away at the moment but I've left them a message about it. They live near Palgrave.

Hi Stu

Yep we sure did and we had a excellent night, we were asked to leave the wood this morning, as we were seen by the land owner or game keeper.
He made a valued point that they were deer hunting and shooting with high caliber riffles and a miss could be then end of one of us, so we apologised and left.

Other than that it was a good time out and I will now have to scout round for a new spot.

Hi Stu

Yep we sure did and we had a excellent night,

Hi,

That's good, Shame you got spotted , but better then getting shot. oh well sure a new site can be found,

I been busy this morning, Started to get kit together for next Friday, decided that I need a few more stuff sacks , go dragged the sewing machine out, and looked to see what Rip-stop I had in stock, grabbed hold of some green I had, made about three, then had to use black, got carried away and made loads, lol, then then thought perhaps colour coding would help when they are in the ruck sack, so got some red, blue, and purple out red for fire/tinder box, Purple for Plates/eating iron, blue for wash kit, but now got 6 spare in black, lol, in various sizes, so if anyone's interested @ £3 each with out cord and toggle, I'll bring them on Tuesday.

Also thought a Hammock may be of some use as well, had a dig about and pulled out an old Hang Glider cover that I had kicking about, that got cut up and with a quick stitch up and a couple of lengths of cord a Hevey Duty Hammock was made, just got to sort out suspension for it now :-)

Hi everyone.

Bad news. The woodland I used to use was sold and whilst the old owner was nice the new owner is far from. He's some solicitor, who lives in Bently. He doesn't allow anyone on the land. If a dog walker strays from the paths, he chases them out. There is another part owned by Bluegate Farm which I will try asking tomorrow but as it stands, Old Hall Woods is a no go for now.

I had asked couple farmers who do business with my family.
One said there forest is overgrown and boggy so said it probably wouldn't be safe for us.

The other farmer didn't have any woodland on his farm but said he would ask people he knew(other farmers) but think that's been unsuccessful unfortunately.

Now, my brother lives on farm land. No forest but neighbouring farmers might have small woodlands, long as shooting season over, we might be allowed, only problem that's in framlingham. Don't know if that's too far for people.

Have got permission to camp and do anything in another forest but that's quite far, out in Cambridge.

Sorry for only posting all this bit late but been ill over the weekend.

So, don't know what people wanna do? I'm going Friday regardless of permission or not as I've booked it off to go, so nothing going to stop me.

See you at the Pub.

that's not good news, but Framlingham is still in Suffolk, and only s few miles away really, I still want to go out somewhere Friday night we can chat about it tomoz night.

I will ask the farmer when I next see him were I got the workshop , but not been up there for week, Once we have got together we can then start to act as a group, and hopefully work together to sort a regular site for our use, it may even be that we have to offer a camp site fee, each time we use it...... better the getting chased off and it may lead to things like clay ovens being built ect.

Give me dates for next meet. Gonna take a look at this boggy forest, and see if we can get permanent permission for us to use. Will take pictures and let you all decide whether It's suitable for us.

Also, just became a member of GoOutdoors, expensive unless you've got discount card. (getting a £200 gortex coat for £80). So if you wanna use my card, just pm me.

I been doing some research and have found this place emailed the owner to se if they would accept bushcraft, http://www.orchardcampsite.co.uk/ and got a faverable responce, and he says come along and have a chat and a look at the place, I have told him that we have small tents and tarps also would be always cooking over fire, looks like price wise we could do a deal as we would be looking at somthing regualry.

As Far next meet goes how about mid Feb. date and place to be decided, would perfer perhapas a Sat night tho.

Nice one Stu, that site looks pretty good.

It will sometimes be a compromise I guess between a "formal" site like that and doing our own thing but it looks worth a visit.

Well it seems to be the best of the two evils, do we stealth it and risk problems, use a "Camp Site" until we find a "Home", as long as we can do most of what we want then I can see any problems we may have to adjust somethings but better then, not doing at all.

I have also found a Possiblity at the Spinney in Boxford a Scout Campsite, but that would depend on scout usage and also Insurance that would be need for the group, think we could do it later but out of reach at the mo, untill a group is properly formed.

The long and short of it is that everyone will have to keep ears and eyes open for possible places, and take an active part in a group to make things happen, as they say "many hands make light work", and an active group will only be as successful as the amount of input for its members/users.

Couldn't put it better myself.
We always have the possibility of my mates forest in Cambridge? But that's quite far for some, so will keep asking people closer for now.

We may not be able to do everything ee want on the site stu has found but main thing is, It's a place we won't get moved on from and we can have fires without people getting unhappy bout it.

Up for a Feb meet, work every other Sat though. Can book off if I get enough notice

18th Feb is good for me as well, so thats 3 of us, lets do it......

I'll contact orchard and see if i can visit sunday morning to have a look, then if its any good report back, if your about Tony fancy coming, two set of eyes and eards are better, then maybe we could do the 18th there. if not will have to find somewhere else.

Yeah I think it may well be an idea to , but would it mean we would have to be more structured, it may give us an idea how we will have to set up ready for it.

Hi All,
Bit of info on Orchard Campsite.

I have stayed there with my young son, and we quite liked it. The wooded area is smallish, but with well spaced trees. It's towards the bottom of the site by the river (which you can fish at an additional charge). I think it would be possible to swing a hammock or tarp in this area. The ground is quite bare and a little stoney though.

They allow campfires, which is great, but don't allow you to gather your own firewood (at least not in the high season). They charged us £10 for a wheelbarrow full of seasoned firewood. However I also managed to illegally smuggle in a couple of bags of firewood from home in the boot of the car. (You can drive down quite close to the woodland pitches).

We have only been in the summer months, and whilst it was busy, it didn't seem crowded. This time of year I think you'll almost have the place to yourselves.

In short it's not exactly the wilds of Canada or Scandinavia, but for a temporary option not too far away it's probably OK.

BTW, I'm still happy to lay on some Field Archery one Sunday in the Dunwich area.

Thank you for that Info, its sound ok just for a fill in untill the members of the group get a perm "home", but hey you never know, Hopefully with a regular meet there my well get a better deal, espaicaly in low season, for stuff like the real deep in the woods stuff I can see a couple of trips coming about...

No doubt when we are up and runnig as a gruop will will take you up on your kind offer of some feild archery

Thats good news, I went to Orchards this morning, it looks OK, the woods are not that large, the owner was not there so could not chat to him, the place was empty and covered in snow, I did phone his mobile, he did say that the camp-site was water logged, it felt ok to me, just a bit hard and frozen, lol.

As has been said on here I feel that it would be ok just to get away, and have a night out, for a group as long as it was not too big, lol. I will email him and see what he will charge us but he will not move on the wood cost's.

Well I am trying to get it dow as low as possible , bearing a in mind he has NO one else there, then it depends on if he wants us or not, I am aiming for £4 each, still got no email answer yet....

OK its not quite the wilds but at least its somewere we can use as a base and not get hassle, untill we sorted with a proper woods, also ok when we are the only ones there, as it get busy there will be to mant people about.

Great night last night, after trying Orchards out, OK not out in the wilds but, hey it out amongst the trees, had a bit of trouble getting the fire going due to damp logs, but got it going, after a bit of work with my Hat,

When we arrived and looked for the water we found none of the taps worked, and the loos locked.......... we started to set up, and sort out the Tarps and the Hammocks.

So we waited till the the camp site owner appeared, he told us go round the bag of the house the tap is there so is the loo.... thank good nes we got water.....:) kettle was put on, did some food, after the we finished it off with cheese, oatcakes and a drop of Port...... the just chated till bed time.

Got up this morning there had been a frost, opened my flask that I had made last night, built the fire which I lit no prob this time, cooked breakfast, the just cleared up the site, paid the money and left.

Tony took some pics which hopefully will go up later, all in all yes its not the wilds but as a quick weekender I can see out of season its a good place for somewhere to go, and will be returning again.

I have just let Orchards know that we will require a spot on the 24th March, I have also suggested that theymay be one or two that may ask to stay on the 23rd, and make it a 2 nighter.

I am working on the same prices as last time, I will get these confirmed nearer the time, but I can see no reason why they can not stand.

Yeah lil clear up probably be needed in order to set up, don't want to be to close to river. I might be down the yard this weekend with my brother, doing more chopping of trees, I'll see If I can leave a small pile for us to use, so we'll have some ready to hand. Won't be camping there to the following week at the earliest as I'm working this Saturday. I'll get more pictures as well.
Fishing isn't permitted from the other side of river and my brother got a long stretch so will be the only ones who can fish. Shame the whole 8 acres isn't woodland, otherwise we'd be sorted.

I'm still trying to talk to a few farmers down near capel st mary, see if we can get permission there as one farmer got bout 6 bits of big woodland down there.

Hi Ben and Stu

Let me know when you are up for camping and I will come along.

About the wayfaier food I don't think they are to bad, but that is just my opinion.

each unit is £3.99 you have choice of about 18 meals and 3 afters
I like the all day breakfast
The also do a hot food kit for £5.49 ( re in an emergence do fire cant cook still have hot food.

As I said I am going to order some but any order over £50.00 gets ship free so that is about 12.5 units worth, any takers?

Oh yeah, forgot to mention stu, it is possible to set up without a clear up but think its a bit boggy atm due to the excessive rain last few days. Hopefully dry soon. Can either have a stealth camp in woods following Saturday If a few wanna go but if it's me you and rum we could test by the river.

If weather not good next week then I suggest Forrest.

Its Ok, Quite a cosy site, with some deep water ponds and a river quite a slope to the camp site down to the rive small arera of trees, the loo we had to use was in an out house to the main house as theother were shut, quite wet under foot apart from inbetween the trees, apart from that not much could be said we were the only ones there, shop was not open and the owner was not there for most of the time we were.

Well next Sunday is my birthday so a night out would be great... yeah a camp somewere would be good or a night by the river. we could go back to were Tony, Nick and I went if wanted as well as that was not a bad clearing, easy to get to.

Saying all that the Loos and showers looked like there was a lot of work being done up. the guy is plesent enough tho, you realy need to speak to someone that has been there when the site is fully open.

Sorry to hear that rum. Hope it's better?

I'll be heading to the woods this afternoon, it's the only place I can go. Haven't got any money to head anywhere else unfortunately, payday next Friday.

It does require a lil walk to it. You could probably park car at St. Mary's church, Belstead and walk from there which is bout 5mins away from woods.

Also gotta bring my dog as the missus ain't about to look after him, so if your afraid of big dogs, might be best not to come? Although he will be staked to ground at all times and can bring mussel if it helps.

I'll be at Belstead church( St. Marys ) at 4 if anyone is wanting to come.

Let me know and I'll give you better directions on how to get there.

I'm hiking from chantry to get there myself.

I'll recheck forum in couple hours.

Hi all,
Been trying to find kit but I am not sure what to get. I've placed some archery gear that I don't use on here for swaps for gear. But not to sure what to go for as I've had a load of people say yes please to the items.
I was thinking tent as that is what I have used in the past but kind of like the idea of hammock and tarp, but not to sure. I've had a little read to see what I think I may need but you can never tell.
All the help I can get would be great

From my experience, a tarp is great, in a tent you more removed from the natural world, and I love the hammock, your off the floor, and I find it very comfortable.
I love waking up and being able to see whats around you with out getting out the pit,

I have got a DD travel hammock with i like, and a DD 3x3 tarp but would say go for the XL Tarp due to the size of it would suit me better.

What other kit do you have at the mo.

Cromm
20-03-2012, 22:11
Hi Stu,
I had a few bits but they all seem to have gone walk about..
So what I am left with is;
A Markill stove head to put onto a gas bottle.
A Markill lamp again to put onto a gas bottle.
Gas bottles for above.
One sleeping bag.
One bottle and pouch.
Knife,Axe, Folding sa.
Clothing, hats and boots.
Torch......
And that looks about it.

Would you say your hammock, tarp and sleeping kit is a light as a tent and sleeping bag?

I will happily do the 15th April 2 days any ideas where?

Cromm you mite look on the forum for group byes as I saw one resonantly for DD hammocks and tarps, it keeps the cost down a bit?

Re weight this depends on summer or winter my kite weight can drop by just under half, as winter you need more kit, my tarp and hammock are less than 3 Kg and that is about the weight of my colman tent, not including sleeping bag.
As my sleeping bag is part of a system Got-ex bad, sleeping bag and flees liner but during summer I only use Got-ex bag and flees liner, I hope this helps.

You got the majority that would be needed, The Tapr and Hammock weighs about 1.7Kgs if i remmeber right. This time of year you still need a sleeping bag in a hammock and put the Mat under you to insulate the underside of the hammock.

The Suffolk group is in its first couple of it meets, its just that as its a possible two night it would be good to get lost in a large wood, rather then moving on each day

Good time out in the woods, with Rum, thank you for your company, the laughs, and boy did we laugh.....

Got there in just enough time to get the Tarps up and find some wood for a fire before the night drew in, and the temp to drop enough to make your breath show. so I put on the kettle and made some food, then time to go to bed, slept with the tarp open.

got up the next day to gather some more wood, find some nice fat wood. then tapped a couple of Birch's for some sap, then sat down and decided to try to carve my first spoon........

we thought we would have a quite weekend getting away from noise and an the hustle and bustle of life...... yeah like hell, all we heard was car racing going on at the next door airstrip until about 5 o'clock... the it went quite until the load raver music started early evening... AAARRRGHHHH.... but we had to chuckle at it.

After a good night sleep believe it or not, think it was due to the fact of tiredness more then anything else. I closed up the tarp as the wind was getting up, but i like to see the woods when i wake up, but hey better then a draught waking you up. we got up and decided to leave at mid moring,

Hello all -- I've posted a public introduction & I thought I'd post a local introduction too... I'm Tim from Bury St. Edmunds. I like to cycle & walk. I don't drive. My family situation means I can't spend any nights away from home at the moment.

I've skimmed through the thread and looked at the pics' -- Looks very interesting. I look forward to seeing you lot in action.

Among the things I'd like to learn is how to set-up my dutch army poncho as a tarp. Knots (the only knot I really understand is the thumb knot, and I'm not totally sure about that one!). Caring for sharps would also be handy. And keeping pots & pans / eating utensils clean over multi-night trips.

Welcome to the thread, most of the time we are over Ipswich way as Tony (Rumcelt) and I live that way, we are yet to get more then two of us at a meet, so have been using local to us, we were going over to Thetford for the weekend as I was not seeing the kids on the 15th but decided not to in the end, and went to Rendelsham area. we found it just about right for lightthe a mount left and let us set up with out rushing, after work

Next month we will be going down to the sussex mob to visit them but hopefuly get another night out before then.

I dont know about action..... but hey its time out, and something to do, while having a go at new things, as far as trying new knots just look them up o the tinternet and have a go i just use what i feel at the time.

I use a 3m x 3m DD Tarp and a DD travel Hamock, with a homemade Underquilt at the mo, but will be upsizzing to a XL tarp from DD befor long, as i find the smaller on too small for what i want, it works but hey you can always have more toys, lol.

I am just about to make a camp grill , hlafway through a kife, and going to make some whoppie slings for my hammock soon, hopefully picking up the dyneema this week. so there is loads for you to do off site of a camp as well.

Hi all, I have been following the threads for a few weeks, I have a DD tarp and Frontier hammock with loads of my old army bits and bobs, just not manger to get out yet. Big Stu and Rumcelt I would like to meet up as I live in Colchester, I think I will join you at Sussex meet, but it would be good to test my kit out before hand if you are doing anything at weekends.
I am also a landy fan, sold my modded Disco 300tdi before Xmas, hoping to get a 90 soon, was a member of Essex Landover club but that expired.
Hope to meet up soon.

Hi Roman,

It would be good to meet up with you before the Sussex meet, Tony (Rumcelt) have spoken about another meet before the sussex one, I was going to suggest a one nighter to him , maybe Fri 11th May at our normal area, prob at a different spot tho, as we move around. Better got to teh workshop to make that grill, lol

was going to go upto norwich meet but now cant make it as little one wants to go to her party on the 12th.....

Tony will be by soon to say yeah or nay...

I got a 300tdi, lifted, snorkel, breathers, EGR'd, Cat'd, few other bits, and it does me well, as well as being a good bus for doing the busy thing, I am a member of Suffolk Landrover Owners Club.

As far as Sussex is concerned we are going on the Friday morn to make the most of it, lol.

Speaking of underquilts ifound this guide http://gear-report.com/how-to-make-a-diy-camping-hammock-underquilt-from-a-sleeping-bag/ it looks simple, I have a old square fishing sleeping bag to have a go with. I'd be interested to see how Stu did yours

Big Stu 12

more or less the same, two lops at each end , the made sure there was not an opening at each end by putting a cord on each end to gather it up, this should stop any air trapped between the bag and the hammock getting out.

Hi guys,
I'm Marc, although my username scopey is what everyone has called me since I was 18.
New to the forum, posted an intro in the introductions section - i'm ex army ,now a police officer and just love anything to do with the outdoors. Im currently finishing my ML course so up in the mountains as much as I can, also big into mountain biking, trail running and just getting out in the forest - often with my dog, an Alaskan Malamute called Dakota.
I live in Brandon and my house backs out onto the forest , so still Suffolk but maybe a bit of distance from the rest of you guys - you all Ipswich way?
Anyway if there is room for one more i'm game - more into the outdoors/wilderness survival side of bushcraft with its practical applications than any arty carving stuff etc.
Getting away at weekends can be hard as a shift worker but be good to get out and make new mates!

Hi Scopey

Being an ex-climber myself, I think anyone who can complete the ML course already knows quite a bit about survival training and can probably show us one or two things.
I look forward to exchanging info.

Hi Roman-Soldier

Just something to add into the mix, under quilt's do have there uses but they do add bulk to your kit?
When it gets cold and my definition of cold is anything below 1 or 2 degrees C. I will use a thermo rest and a self inflating thermo and go to ground and drop my tarp as low as possible this reduces windchill factor, just a thought.

Not been to the brecons for years, went to Mid Wales last Nove to do a bit of off roading, for a long weekend but that was staying in a lodge, looking to may be sept time doing a few days north to south wales off road and wild camping.

Yeah spent far too much of my life living in the outdoors in Brecon and surrounding areas - know it VERY well thanks to the army... And spent at least one weekend a month in snowdonia during 2009 on the build up to an unsupported trek to Everest basecamp.
Looking forward to getting away for a few days away:)
