View Full Version : N.E.Scotland meet ( Glen Tanar)
Ok thanks to the kind folks up at Glen Tanar allowing us to hold our meet up there we can now get names down, lessons sorted etc.
First off same rules apply as last time.
under are some rules (Pinched from drew as they are a good guide wtih my own bits added) that I would ask you all to follow.
This list isn't exhaustive - common sense applies. If in doubt, Ask!
•Forum members are responsible for themselves, the kit they use and their own actions at the Meet – if you bring along family (or a friend) then you also accept responsibility for them and their actions whilst they are on site.
•Rubbish: you brought it in, you put it in the bag – I will bring some bags along and if we can leave the site better than when we got there it will leave a good impresion and we will more likely to be asked back.
•Responsible drinking of alcohol is ok – drugs are prohibited!
•‘Appropriate’ behaviour: The site can, at any time, decline a booking – they can also ask(tell) us (individually or wholly) to leave during the Meet.
•Fires: are NOT to be left unattended, If you take a turn in watching the group fire or make your own and have to leave it please ask sombody to watch it for you (we are in the woods after all)
•Nobody is to go cutting down any live tree ( please ask if you are unsure)
•Food: you need to bring enough food and water to feed yourself while you are at the Meet.
•Accidents do happen and people will try to help out where they can however bringing your own First aid kit is important.
•If you are visiting someone else’s pitch do not expect to be fed.
•Use the appropriate tools at the appropriate times.
•It would be wise to be carrying a torch before it gets dark! It could also be provident to put markers on your shelter so you can find it in the dark.
•The pitch is suitable for using tents, hammocks and bivvies - use what you have and are comfortable using. There is still ample room to bring/use one type and trial/experiment with another. ( TBC ate the recce)
•If you stick your name down and can no longer make it, please say so. It really helps me keep track of things.
•Please note that, on occassion, the first post will be edited to include better information. Although updates/edits will be posted in the thread, the first post needs to be re-read well in advance of the Meet
•In the highly unlikely event that I need to make use of this ... I reserve the right to stop any individual(s) from attending a Meet. Any individual(s) who I feel endanger our future use of the site will be required to leave the site.
• Please do not leave knives, axes unsheathed/ lying around.
The 'Touchy Subject' bit:
The only people we can't accommodate are those who would, purposely or otherwise, do harm to others. Primarily, this means that if you would be found unfit to adopt or foster a child then you can’t come along – same goes for anyone knowingly under investigation or having had an allegation made against them and is awaiting investigation.
It's fine if you want to:
•be on your own
•lay on your back looking at the sky, clouds, birds flying over etc
•whittle
•practice 'stuff' - except tree felling; the site has strong opinions about that
•practice flora and fauna i.d
•so on and so forth ...
This is, in no way, a bushcraft course and it's for you to make of it what you will.
(Thanks for the guide Drew)
So its really basic common sense. If you cant/wont stick to these rules then please do not come. Also anybody breaking these rules will be asked to leave
Glad thats over with,
many thanks
Craig
Ok lessons planned so far include:
Rope making.
Rope double twist, plaited, whipping.
skinning ( If anybody has a problem with this please let me know).
Slings (I can show you all how to make them on site if i can get enough leather together).
Char cloth.
Camp cooking ( Again it will depend on where we are and what type of soil is there).
Fat into tallow to make a fat lamp.
Birch Bark oil (if we can get enough bark either there or people bringing some with them)
Lye from ash ( If we can get enough hardwood to burn)
raised bed ( Time depending)
Wild food
knots
If anybody can think of anything they would like to try in particular please say so we can sort it out. Also if anybody has something they are willing teach the group it would be appreciated.
All/some of the rules and lessons planned may be changed depending on how the meet with the ranger goes and this page will be ammended accordingly so keep checking.
Dates: Ok the best dates that I think we will get is Fri 27th- Sun 29th April. Now I will be asking the ranger if we can extend that by 2 days so it may be Wed 25th- Sun 29th April.
Again like last time can you put down your name and confirm asap as I will need to know the final head count at least a week before the meet. Also if anybody has any questions or needs help with anything PM me.
Copy and paste the names list please.

Sounds good, I am in.
The birch bark oil should be easy to do, just need the bark for it. I may have some local dead birch that I can scavange from.
I can also go over the needle making and then the net making.
We may as well make a table at the camp, easy to setup and easy to demonstrate.
For the slings I will look out some leather scraps as well and bring them along.
I am sure there are a few other things we can try.

•Food: you need to bring enough food and water to feed yourself while you are at the Meet.
Just need to change this rule to.......Chocolate snacks should be brought to feed everyone else.....and Craig will provide all the food.;)Just kidding by the way, but snacks are welcome. :)
rofl: with the amount of haggis we had last time we could feed the entire bushcraft community.
But I will no doubt be bringing some of the better halfs snacks :)

I would absolutley love to come along, since I missed the last one :(
Unfortunatley I can't plan things very far in advance as I lead a bit of a fluid lifestyle, well where weekends are concerned anyway. I will put my status down for a 'provisional' coming a long if thats ok...
No probs mate as long as I know a week before.

I guess some sort of stew is the easiest thing to make as its a case of chucking it all in a pot and cooking over the fire.

Sounds like a hoot, subject to dates please count me in.
If you are visiting someone else’s pitch do not expect to be fed.
Does that actually happen and if so am I allowed to chase the cheeky sods? :)
Good to have you aboard Bigfoot,
Ok folks update time,
After visiting Glen Tanar last Sat we were able to pick a site and get things underway. I have just had conformation from the Glen Tanar rangers that we have the site booked.
All I need to do now is a bit of paperwork and we are sorted. If you could confirm if your coming asap it would help me a great deal.

Here are some pics of the site, I did this for a trip report for another forum
we reached the car park where we were all meeting up and the skies were blue:

After everybody arrived it was back in the cars so the ranger could show us all the places we have been given permission to use. After a few minutes’ drive, we reach a bend in the river that we can use. Also we are allowed to take brown trout. Our site is behind a ridge on the other side of the river.

Thats a very kind offer thank you. But if travelling by bus I'll be going through Banchory quite late as well. I may well have use of the car - but to be honest sitting on a bus for a couple of hours followed by a bit of a walk is no big deal for me and it also means the missus has the car for the weekend, keeps her happy :) anyway it all depends IF I can actually get away...
kiltedpict
23-02-2012, 11:02
Well, it'd be no probs even to nip out of the camp to come and get ya if it helps. We can discuss it again nearer the time bud.
Ok folks Ive just had the GT camping guidelines back so we have to make sure we stick to both their and our own rules.
Guidelines for Camping at Glen Tanar
These guidelines have been produced for campers using the Bridge o’Ess campsites at Glen Tanar. They follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, and provide information about the resources of the campsite and how to minimise the impact of camps on the local environment. Respect the interests of other people Glen Tanar is visited by a great many people throughout the year; it is a working estate and is also home for many people. Therefore we ask that you:
Keep vehicles off the road during the loading and unloading of camping equipment (there is a bay next to Campsite A) and park in the designated area (refer to map). One car maybe kept at the campsite for emergencies.
Keep any pets on a lead at all times.
Check your camping programme with the Ranger Service in order to minimise potential conflict with other estate activities.
Leave the campsite and the surrounding area as you find it. Leave no Trace.
Care for the Environment
Tents
Tents can be pitched anywhere in campsite A (Grid Ref: NO501970) or B (Grid Ref: NO503969)
Raise ground sheets daily or move tents to allow the underlying grass to breathe.
Do not dig ditches to divert rainwater from your tent.
Disposal of Waste
Plan your disposal of waste in advance, try to reduce the amount of disposable material you bring with you, otherwise, re-use or recycle.
Do not burn or bury plastics or tin cans.
Recycling bins for plastic bottles, food and drink cans, glass bottles, clothing, cardboard and newspaper are available in Aboyne at the back of the Station Square shops, Aboyne Community Centre and at The Boat Inn.
Waste food should be packed and taken out.
Water supply
Water can be taken from the Alt Roy or containers may be filled at the Visitor Centre.
For washing (personal hygiene or dishes), take water and wash away from the river. Dispose of the water away from water courses.
Use biodegradable cleaning agents.
Toilets
Toilet pits must be dug in the area marked on the map.
A latrine trench should be dug with excrement being buried 5-10 cm below the surface. When finished back fill the trench and cover the site with stones.
Chemical toilets: arrange for the disposal of waste off-site in an approved manner or contact the supplier for delivery and uplift of portable toilets.
Sanitary waste must be removed and disposed off site.
Fires
A permanent fire site is provided on each of the campsites. Please do not light fires outside these areas.
Never leave the fire unattended.
At the end of your stay, ensure the fire is extinguished.
Firewood can be collected from the surrounds. Do Not cut down any living trees.
Take Responsibility for your Actions.
This is not a risk free environment and it is up to you to act with due care and attention so that you are able to minimise your impact on the environment and the impact that the environment has on you. Environmental Hazards to be aware of
Sunburn/exposure
Weil’s (Rats) and Lyme’s (Ticks) disease
Steep slopes and deep water
Toxic/allergenic plants
Resident Wildlife in particular snakes (Adder) and biting insects (Cleggs)

ok just had a word back from Eric ( The Ranger) RE the fishing.
He wants to know what fishing techniques we want to use so he can asses and either say yea or nea.
so any ideas???
Ranger's permission given, I'll be bringing fly rods and accoutrements, enough to kit out myself plus one if someone else wants a go.
I was going to try rod and line, unsure of the exact methodology, be it spinning, worm dangling or fly. I don't plan to use any underhand techniques, such as dynamite, nets, tickling etc.
Pandabean
12-03-2012, 13:48
Great that you can come along Eric. :)
I have no experience of fishing but if there is trout i can show how to ponasse it over the open fire if anyone is lucky enough to catch one or two.
Right folks we have been given the ok for the fishing ( fly rods, rods and hand lines). I haven't a clue about fishing so you'll have to take the lead Adze mate if your willing to help anybody who wants to have a go.
Another thing I must mention is we have to park the cars at either of the 2 car parks and not on site. We are however allowed to drive to the site to drop our gear off but must then take the cars to the carpark. I have asked that we be allowed 1 car next to us for emergency and that's been allowed.

As regards fires only in the established fireplaces, does this apply to Kelly Kettles and the like?

not sure i can make the weekend, is this still starting mid week?
Right folks we have been given the ok for the fishing ( fly rods, rods and hand lines). I haven't a clue about fishing so you'll have to take the lead Adze mate if your willing to help anybody who wants to have a go.
It's been a while since I last wet a line but I'm quite happy to lend some kit and give some basic instruction to anyone who is interested.
Nickliv Ill put here what I p'md you mate,
Kelly kettles etc will be ok to use as long as you can get them up of the ground as they don't want any fire scars.
capt.Dunc: A couple of us have to go down on the Thursday to get the site etc sorted but everybody else will be coming down on either the Friday or Saturday so don't worry if you cant make the whole weekend.
Adze: That is great mate , thanks .
For the group meals:
Friday Haggis supper: What exactly do you want with the haggis? Once we sort that out we can start planning who brings what as we nearly died with the amount brought last time LOL.
Saturday stew: Everybody ok with the wagoners stew again ( we can add our own spice ) ?
Oh one thing chaps I don't think Dave's coming so has anybody got a big pot???

Well, for Haggis, surely it's gotta be mashed tatties and neeps?
I have access to a large soup pan we can use- its in the loft just now but if memory serves, it's pretty big!
I trust the Frontier Stove will be ok Craig?

Last time this is what we had for a few of us and there was still plenty left over.

Goodness! I haven't seen tinned haggis in years. Can't get it anywhere in England as far as I know. Where did that lot come from?
Pandabean
20-03-2012, 08:45
We got it from the supermarkets. Plenty of the stuff up here. :)
Although one of the sad reasons may be that the haggis is farmed by these large companies. Poor wee things kept in cages with no mountains to run around. Just imagine a dog chasing it's tail, that is how they have to cope.
Right folks here is the recipe for the wagoners stew :
Like last time if you want to put your name next to an item/s and I will get whats left.
WAGON MASTERS STEW
3lb. Dice beef
1tsp. sugar
½ cup flour
2Tbs. worcestershire sauce
1tsp. salt
½ tsp. Paprika
1tsp. Pepper
11/2 tsp. tobasco
¼ cup olive oil
2 pints hot water
2 bay leaves
15 oz. can kidney beans
1tsp. thyme
corn flour or gravy mix (optional)
1 lb. bag frozen corn
1 lb. bag frozen petite peas
1 lb. bag frozen green beans
Trim excess fat from meat and cut into 1" cubes. In a medium size bowl combine flour, salt, and pepper and stir to mix. Add meat and mix until meat is well coated.
Heat a 12" deep Dutch oven or large pot. Add olive oil then meat and brown meat on all sides. Add onion and garlic and continue cooking until onions are soft and translucent.
Add HOT water, stock cubes, bay leaves, thyme, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, and tobasco. Stir to mix completely. Bring to a boil then add carrots and celery. Return to boil and let cook 15 minutes. Thicken with corn flour or gravy mix if necessary.
Stir in remaining ingredients and bring contents to a boil. Cover and simmer for 30-45 minutes or until vegetables are soft.
Serves: 15-20
1 lb. cubed/diced beef - CBJ
1 lb. cubed/diced beef
1 lb. cubed/diced beef
60ml olive oil
5 carrots
4 stalks celery
6 medium potatoes
1 lb. bag frozen corn
1 lb. bag frozen petite peas
1 lb. bag frozen green beans
15 oz. can kidney beans
Pandabean

We split the meat last time I think so no one has to buy 3lbs of it.
3lbs = 1.36kg
So we can take 4 x 500gs pack of diced meat/stewing beef

Sorry guys, we can't make it. Cameron just brought a letter home from school saying permission for him to off on the Friday is denied due to GCSE committments. It wouldn't be worth driving up on the Saturday then leaving next morning to drive all the way back to Durham again.
We've decided it's Glen Trool during the easter hols instead.

Hi Craig,
Thanks for your reply. Re the dogs, I did see that someone else is bringing theirs. My Holly is very friendly but also submissive i.e. when meeting more dominant dogs she is happy to let them be the boss so, I'm really quite confident about her with other dogs. Of course, if the other owner has any reservations, they asked first so, that's no problem.
As for the list, I would add myself to it but I don't know how sorry. I would be planning on coming up late Friday afternoon and staying through to the Sunday. Would it be ok if my pal comes? She can only manage the Friday evening through to Saturday lunchtime but she is my usual camping buddy and I don't want her to miss out as she will love this.
Cheers,
Taylor

Another use for a parachute: as an indicator of temperature/pressure. In this illustration, showing a low relative pressure within the parachute; as distinct from its evening billow.
Or the frost's weighing it down.

That's not a refugee camp in centre of shot. That was my 'house'
Great to meet you all, thanks to Craig, and Glen Tanar for sorting and allowing the meet. I'm off tomorrow to buy gaffer tape and copper pipe. Or am I?

It's perfectly acceptable to make an improvised bugle to herald your Dutch pheasant (that's not slang; at least, I hope it isn't).
And it's amazing how well a duck tape mute works.

Adze, I think you left your cramp balls behind, we found them whilst we were packing away on Sunday after you left.
No worries Andy - keep 'em or divvy them up and share them around if anyone wants them. I know where there's a few likely spots for them around here and IIRC they're not common up your way.
The good news is I found the Hultafors knife I'd lost. It was, as predicted, at the bottom of my pack covered up by too much paracord ;)
Cheers!
No worries chaps :)
Thanks to you all for coming and making the meet a success. I had a great time.
I will try to get my pics up on the other thread today at some point.
Oh 1 other thing that was found was a thin strap so if anybody has lost one let me know.

I think Fraser or Craig took the Cramp Balls. You are right they are very rare up this way, they seem to favour the warmer climes of down south.
Did you find that other knife of yours? We didn't find one whilst packing up.
Thanks again Craig for organising it......time now to start planning the next one? :)

Certainly did! ;)
Fingers on the mend. Just a fairy princess elastoplast on it now.

I wonder if anyone else following the meet has had the same woodworm problems as KiltedPict noticed in his wooden crate?
I've since had a report from another attendee of a hole in a piece of 4x2 which, measured using a nail, was 18mm deep.
Bugling, for some reason, appears to encourage proliferation.

I can find no evidence of woodworm yet. Although I have had a super-mouse problem in the loft, a massive piece of cylindrical metal was moved.

I appear to have discovered a new strain...

...all I can say is 'POTATOES!' :D
Good shot!
Apart being a little out-of-focus.
HAHAHA those bugle worms are on the increase.
Great stuff

:stretcher: doing just fine now thanks. I'm bidding on a set of chainmail gloves for the next meet.
Blade safety gloves http://www.arco.co.uk/products/14G5600/299115/Skytec%26reg%3B+Ninja+Knight+P alm+Coated+Glove . I went for Kevlar gloves from somewhere else.

Kevlar gloves obtained. I am keen not to test them though.

While protective gear can be a good idea... it's never as good as protective gear and using the tool in the correct manner!
Spot on. Anyone else had a go at the cider?

Is this the point at which I say "a blunt knife is safer than a sharp one"... and sit back and count the posts until someone compares me to [insert dictator of choice]?
And nickliv, it's irresponsible to encourage the mixture of cider and sharps; with or without Kevlar or Dyneema.

No to cider. We did just make nettle soup thickened with pignut, to go with beech/lime/hawthorn/ramson/dandelion salad; but it didn't last long enough to ferment.
Prompted by your question, I've gone and found where Mrs Chance had been hiding last year's, thankfully unexploded, seabuckthornade. Without tasting it (being TT), how can I tell if that's the smell of carbon dioxide or fizzy vinegar?
CO2 being famously acetic in its odour.
Stand the unopened bottle in a bowl with a lit tealight in it, and see if the tealight gutters when you open it?
