Neil1

Christmas over and the new year well under way......so how about another???
I'm thinking the last weekend in January (27,28,29), the usual place and hopefully the usual suspects?
Its not restricted to Sussex passports holders - so if you are in Kent and fancy a change of scene - please come along.
Add you names to the list below:

Neil beat me to it as I was going to put up a thread tonight on a January meet, now that the holidays are out of the way. Had great fun last time and the Christmas Dinner on the camp fire was good, considering how it was cooked. I am up for this but my Brother is down to see my sister that weekend, so will probably have to disapper off for a bit on the Saturday.

Booking form has been sent off by mail just now. I did not ask for a specific pitch as deciding on one is not easy as they all have advantages & disadvantages. Perhaps Neil can choose one or I can give them a call in a few days.

Do people have a particular one they want to use? Let us know and we can choose one. Last time we had one behind the chapel, A1 I think, that was quite nice.

Neil1
10-01-2012, 22:29
I think (so far) D1 has been the best. It is certainly easier to get the chute up and vehicle access is easier. The pitches were level and well drained too for the ground dwellers. Its only downside is lack of firewood, but we could bring our own in.
On another note - I have done the recce for the "walk-in", for one of our later meet-ups.

I agree with Neil D1 is a good site. I will be getting there on the Friday, so I can sorce some wood and get a fire going. If the forecast is pants I will get the chute off Neil and get that up. See you all in a few weeks.

Luke

Kepis

. Its only downside is lack of firewood, but we could bring our own in

Could we 'forage' the wood from elsewhere on site?, i have a trolley i use for fishing that we could jury rig to carry timber from elsewhere on site if need be, i think somewhere in the tool store at the lakes i might even have a collapsable wheel barrow that would be a better option - i'll have a look see.

Hugo
11-01-2012, 19:26
If I remember site D13 was a good one, plenty of wood and plenty of good places for ground dwellers and tree huggers.

Kepis
11-01-2012, 20:05
I enjoyed D13 last time i was up there

Neumo
11-01-2012, 23:25
I don't mind. I liked D1 myself, as it is near the facilities, not too noisy from the road & pretty flat.

As for wood, if people can bring some that is always appreciated. If we get a work group together I am sure we can get a pile together especially if Kepis brings his trolley

spandit
12-01-2012, 18:35
I thought A1 looked cosy. Will understand if D1 is chosen again, though. Might even make the Friday night as work schedule been changed

Kepis
12-01-2012, 18:49
As long as it's flat enough for me to put a couple of tents up im happy, we will just have to go "foraging" for fire wood, im up the lakes again this weekend, so i'll have a look at the folding barrow we have up there to see if i can collapse it enough to get it in my car, as both the boys want to come along now and getting the three of us with gear and a barrow into my roller skate could be fun

Simon H
13-01-2012, 11:43
Kepis keep the space for your kids and kit, I have a barrow/trolley thing which I can bring as I'm coming on my own. I should be there Friday afternoon too so we can get some wood gathered before dark.

I have had a booking email back from Broadstone:

Thank you for booking to stay at Broadstone Warren.
I have reserved site A9/11 for your use from 2pm on 27th until 4pm on 29th January 2012.

We can change it if we want, I think

Kepis
13-01-2012, 16:11
Sounds good, can anyone remember what A9 is like?, not seen that pitch myself.

@Simon - okey dokey, saves me a trip as well

Hugo
13-01-2012, 19:24
A9 is behind the main toilet block, follow the main track to the right of it, bare left and it is down on the left way past the small wooden chapel.
The site I mentioned in my earlier post was D3 not D13, It was changed at the last minute to D3 near the road and Ranger car park.
Just thought I'd clear this up.
I'll get there on Friday as well. @ Kepis click this for site map. http://www.broadstonewarren.org.uk/index.php/site_plan/

Rescued along with Simon's car as well, I did offer money but it was refused, they are a nice bunch of guys there.
I might have my new from Hong Kong gas stove to try out, not like yours mind, cannister is on the end of a hose.
I'm still looking for a Colman like yours.

Neil1
13-01-2012, 20:11
D1 would still be my favourite, it certainly was the best place for putting the chute up and is fairly central for the facilities.
Hugo - it was my coleman stove, very good bit of kit if they still do them.
John and the boys at Broadstone are very obliging if there is a problem it has to be said. The location is stunning too (I can see why Woodlore use it so much).

14-01-2012, 13:05
Sounds like D1 is the most popular so far, so i will phone them up on Monday to get it changed.

Hugo
14-01-2012, 13:35
I'll go for D1 as well. if I remember right the A9 in further down the hill and it is a wet area, the stream is closer than the last time and it is on a bit of a slope.
Just my observation chaps.

I can bring 25ltr jerry cans, which could be filled & driven up to D1. A9 its going to be difficult to get a chute up to the height we would need for a large group.

It's been a while.... :)

'real life' financial, house and personal issues meant we didnt get out again last year after June! But although we may not be able to make the Jan meet, we are hoping to get back on the scene and into the woods soon.
So, so pleased to see the group still running: thanks Neumo and Neil! Xx

Hugo
23-01-2012, 19:00
Hi nova&Pinky, glad to see you are taking an interest again.
Sit closer and cosier, I was so close to the fire that Dave informed me that my boots were on fire and I was still cold.
A great bunch of blokes to camp out with.
As for wood at A9, what was burned was wood and charcoal that was taken along by simon and me and Jack kindly dropped the dustbin full of charcoal off for us all.
Many thanks for that Jack.
I'll be a water carrier as well as Neil, some of you guys never touch the stuff anyway. ha ha.

D1 or D3 FOR ME please. A nice flat area.

Kepis
23-01-2012, 19:08
Wasnt A9 the one that was boggy, sloping and devoid of fire wood? Personally id rather go to a pitch like D1 or D3 as i have two tents to erect this time, I can bring a 20L MOD water can along if need be?

F7144
23-01-2012, 19:13
I have 2 army jerrycans, which I can bring. Water discipline is a good experience for those who have not had to do it before. Shelter may well be the priority, depending on the forecast. We need the chute fairly high to allow for a bigger fire to keep the group warm, we have quite a few people coming. Can we top up the jerrycans at the office? If we do go for D1, think about what food you bring as washing up water may become an issue. If we all bring some personal drinking water that would help off set the jerrycans that myself and Neil bring.

Luke

F7144
23-01-2012, 19:20
Just remembered I also have a large clear plastic water container, so i can bring approx 70L of water. Kepis has 20L, Neil has access to four 20L jerrycans (think thats right). We should be ok if everyone can bring a few litres for brewing up.

spandit

Neil1

Remember it's currently forecast 0c and below for the weekend. Don't fully top up ANY water containers!
Ohh - Snow perhaps!!!
I think I have access to plenty of water containers, I'll put three in my car and fill them at the office. If we are in for some cold weather, then Luke is right about the fire (and having the gear to maintain it), I'll make sure I have my bow saw and a large axe for splitting in too.
Small wood will be usefull for cooking heat and getting water boiled in a hurry, so if anyone wants to bring kindling sized stuff along that would be very helpfull.
I'll bring lanterns for light, but they will be just hurricane lamps as I have'nt had the time to get the vapalux ones sorted yet. So if anyone has a lamp they can bring along too that would be great.

Hugo
24-01-2012, 09:57

They have a few UK suppliers.

I was looking for a high quality down bag. An Alpkit is £190 for a bag that is 400 grams heavier - not massive but they are never in stock. All other brands I have looked at are either too heavy (subjective I know but over 1.3kg for -3c to -5c bag is too much) or the price is near enough the same - +/- £40.

Other bags I looked at are....

Rab Neutrino 400 (not as warm as the Western Mountaineering)
http://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/index.cfm/product/rab-neutrino-400/fuseaction/products.detail/code/81410034/id_colour/157/group/239/level/3

Rab Ascent 700 (to heavy really)
http://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/index.cfm/product/rab-ascent-700/fuseaction/products.detail/code/81510068/id_colour/106/group/239/level/3

RAB Apline 600
http://www.ultralightoutdoorgear.co.u k/rab_alpine_600_down_sleeping_b ag.html

My two hobbies are in bi-polar opposites to each other - Photography / Walking & Camping

Photography - the more you spend the heavier it seem to get (glass doesn't come in lightweight)
Camping - the more you spend the lighter it becomes

So one has to offset the other!! :)

costs £145
Performance rating: 4 Season
Packed size: 25 x 25 x 45 cm (equivalent to 22 litres)
Unrolled length: approximately 181 cm (from top of zip to feet) plus head room
Internal length: 200 cm approx.
Width at shoulders: 82 cm
Weight: 2.3 kg
Minimum comfort temperature: -25 °C
Minimum extreme temperature: -35 °C
I will be arriving friday morning, are we on D1? I will get the parachute off Neil and get it set up if possible.

Nice bags, but a little heavy for me and the pack size is way to big for my bag.

Thanks for the idea though...

Hi everyone, I have had a word with the site manager at Broadstone Warren and asked for pitch D1 and he said it was OK to have that one. So it will be D1 that we will be camping on.
As you know the water tap is turn off at this area but there are other places we can get water from on site.
The purpose for asking for D1 was people who do know the site area know this is a good level area for pitching the large parachute for a group shelter ( cheers to Neil 1 for that ) also the floor is soft under foot so has better drainage for this time of year.
I look forward to seeing all you guys and girls this weekend at pitch D1. I'll be there some time on Friday but have business on the way there so not sure exactly what time.

Looks like my sleeping bag should arrive in time. Its set for a "by noon delivery" for tomorrow.

Noob questions (first meet and all) -

- Do I need to bring food or money for food? If so what is needed?

- I know when I was a scout that Broadstone Warren was a dry site, does that still apply for adults and a couple of cans? (leave no trace of course)

Bring food. There is a small Tesco down the road but someone would have to drive you. There might be a hotplate over the fire to fry stuff but can't remember who brings it & if they're coming.

Bring some cash to pay for the stay (£5 per 24 hour period)

Drink is fine. The times I've been it hasn't been a major factor but it's certainly not prohibited

Don't forget a chair/something to sit on by the fire!

Update - It looked like my new bag would arrive in time, but I have an email now that says not only did they not post it today (no it wont be here tomorrow) but due to a stock issue they have the wrong size.

So NO SLEEPING BAG! :(

Gonna have to bail on this as I dont want to be cold and I don't trust my current bag if the temp drops.

Might see you Saturday arvo though.

Sorry again.

Mike

I have a 58 pattern bag you can borrow if you want, which lives in boot in winter so I will have it with me. Not the best in sub 0 temps but this one is not too bad if you want to give it a go.

Pitch D1 is fine if we can get it & is my preferance (apart from the firewood). Not sure if I can make Friday, as it will be a last minute call but will be there Saturday if not. Looking forward to this one as it should be bigger.

Great meet with great perople. Another relaxed get togeather under the chute, with the fire always burning & the converstaion interesting. It was good to see some new faces as well as those that are now becoming regulars. I had a chat with Neil aboutthe next one & it will probably be posted in the next week or so. The middle to end of the month seems to be the most popular, so we will look at dates around then. Thanks to all those who made it for another marvelous weekend.

Hugo so do I,problem is had a back problem for 3 years, had facet joint injections and was on Tramadol for the pain, came of them June 2010,had problems with side effects so I thought, fatigue, nausea, dizzine ss/confusion,headaches and breathlessness.Went to doctors in September last year been having various tests since,at first they thought I had had a minor stroke, but all tests come back negative so its not that.Thought it could be Marfan syndrome, but waiting to see a Geneticist.Thing is cant do anything without getting badly out of breath and fatigued, saw gp last week, and he now thinking it could be Celiacs,so had another blood test, should get results next week, and hopefully will get to the bottom of it.Just missing getting out,and was so enjoying the meets, and there are so many new faces now,:(
