John Fenna
29-12-2011, 16:07
Looks good - is it an official site or a permission you have organised?
What is the availability of firewood/perm to have fires etc?
I can do early feb:)

Jaymzflood
29-12-2011, 16:12
The pictures provded are inside the brecon beacons, but well out of the way from any civilization/farms/huntsman! ;)

Jaymzflood
29-12-2011, 16:15
But I also know of a free site in Ystrafelte that a river runs next to, this is also inside the beacons but the last time I camped there, there were a few kids up there all doing their thing

John Fenna
29-12-2011, 16:28
My days of camping outside of authorised site (privately negotiated or public campsites) are in the past now as I have no desire to be accused of tresspass or damaging woodlands :)
I know of a cheap, authorised site near there ... but it has no facilities or firewood (BYO) ....

Ive always been careful where I camp, If i think im going to damage or put anything in danger, Ill move on. Having camped here before, and people who regularly camp there, I dont think a couple of experienced craftsmen are going to get a slap on the wrist.

John Fenna

Ive had a fair bit of interest for the Beacons on my inbox, I honestly dont mind tho. Not limited to 1 trip are we :)

John Fenna
31-12-2011, 07:55
That sounds reasonable :)
But before I start anything about a meet at this site I will need to visit the site myself to check it out ... and I am pretty tied up with lots of work, physio and hospital visits at the moment, so it may be a couple of weeks before I get the chance.
Jaymz - As to promoting a wild camp ... I would ask a Mod how that will stand before you do it ... it might put you beyond the site rules ...
I can recommend BNI - if we meet up there folk can check out other sites for future ref and such...

BNI 4th and 5th sounds a runner for me John. Assuming that nothing 'pressing' gets in the way.

I'll see if I could get a few others to join us and bring a large casserole to hang over the fire, assuming I can shoot something in the meantime.

I would be up for a meet but later in the year - I haven't got any four season kit and I don't intend to buy any this year. So the cold weather might put a dampner on it for me in Feb. I will keep an eye on this thread for stuff happening later in the year

I would have liked to Stay Friday and Saturday night and leaving Sunday too, rather than staying Sat and Sun night. Obviously with work this is better,

Sapper, is fires permitted on location? Also theres a river, is fishing allowed? :)

sapper1
05-01-2012, 19:45
fires are allowed, bring firewood there is very little there. As to fishing I have no idea. The stream is very shallow and narrow so I would guess at best you may have a small eel but nothing else.

I don't get many rabbits, there just aren't any around here. I do get a lot of pheasant, and more than the occasional deer mind. We may have to slum it with venison.

That said, if that's the dray bashing weekend I won't be able to make it but I will get there this year. I shall do my best though.

Wadda ya want a tent for?
You cannot see the view from one of them!
I will just be under a tarp in a hammock or even just ground dwelling :)
Ther is lots of room for tents though and as the site is reasonably sheltered even a garden pop up tent has been known to survive there :)

Just got back from an overnighter with Rich at BNI and he's mention the first weekend in Feb. I'll throw it past the boss but may very well be there........if there is room for a small one!

By the way, the good news is the hill road down to the site has been re-surfaced so getting back out is'nt a problem any more.

Good weather, dry and not too cold, roaring fire and good company; the perfect start to a 2012 with more Bushcrafting!

John Fenna
08-01-2012, 14:49
It is a pity I could not join you!
I hope you can make the next one as well as I would love to catch up with you - it has been tooooooo long mate :)
As to the track - with an overladen frontwheel drive van I still struggled - due to the pine duff on the surface of the track ... third time lucky with a bit of sawing at the wheel.... :)
Most vehicles should cope OK though :D
See you soon hopefully :)

It was great, really chilled and the fire was great. That's the first time I've been out with Spencer in nearly 18 months - families getting in the way. It was great mate and I commented on leaving at the lack of trade goods. The dogs had a great time but my setter shivered on me most of the night rather than use the warm bed I made them so I'm knackered.

John I'm happy to get the kit up in my car rather than drag it all up the hill.

James, I was being sarcastic, I saw a venison dealer selling sirloin for £52 per kg.

I'll try to get out a couple of times next weekend, around the beating on Saturday, and then out for an early one the following weekend before a busy weekend but I cannot promise obviously. If I get some venison I'll set a lump to one side.

Welcome to the forum Winston. What part of Wales you from?

And my i edit post and say what a good turnout its going to be for Feb. Ive got 10 names and a dog so far. Fingers crossed most people can make it, if not everyone. 5 or 6 would be great but if everyone comes who has their name down will be excellent.

OK, clarity please-

How many surefire attendees please? Can do lots of lamb (as requested by one), less of beef; less of chicken; trout is no problem as long as I can catch them (no guaruntee). Cannot, sorry, will not in the future, bring anything if the pee is taken. Rabbits are doable if I stalk the cats but they wouldn't like that and I like them, best left be unless summer. Anything I bring would be tougher cuts for stewing (sorry, first meet, not bringing the best meat to the first meet and you'd have to be an exceptional buch of folk for me to bring steak anyway, no offence ;)) from the sound of it, a big pot is more welcome anyway so stewing is good, just make sure lots of carrot, onion, garlic and celery etc are there; herbs I can do but any additions welcome.

I intend getting there late morning/early pm on friday.
I will leave my van (white peugot expert with home made roofbars) on the junction to help folk who have not been before see where they need to turn down to the bridge.
People will need to bring firewood as there is none left on site. Unless you have superior water purification (although the site is on the river the farm house and farm buildings are upstream) you will want to bring drinking water - and there are no toilets either so think about your field hygiene as well

I'm looking to visit the place below next week as a Newbie trial run.

This is where I was planning before I came across this thread. It may be of use.
It has a basic campsite but also has 18 acres of woodland where you can camp.

People will need to bring firewood as there is none left on site.

I could probably fill your van if we're sharing a lift, 'tis hedge laying/tree harvesting season and we've just taken down a couple ash trees that won't even need seasoning.

GYM is a good spot, no wood at all left there now, picked clean and it is very very muddy down by the river in places so forget your boots and take wellies; still a nice spot though.

There are drier parts but you slog through mud to get there. Remember that your in the base of a valley, a natural cold spot with the river next to you so the temp at night tends to be colder than up on the main campsite. You can bivvy there but make sure you have a really warm sleeping bag with you. Its a great spot and Ian the owner will make you welcome...then you meet one of life's real characters, Ted who again will welcome you.

I had the honour of meeting Ted today. I missed Ian (but only by inches on the drive out :D).

I booked in for some woodland camping tonight but had to cut it short for domestic reasons :(.

Anyway, the woodland is knee deep in mud and it's a job making your way through it. They have horses within the woodland which only adds to the problems! Trying to find a patch mud-free and manure-free was beyond me!
As well as horses and quad bikes churning up the ground, there are quite a few springs running down to the river so I would guess it's wet most of the year. Judging by the litchen on the trees, I would say that sunshine is rare within the valley too.

When I go back it's defo a hammock for me.

rik_uk3
24-01-2012, 06:50
Its over a year since I've been and I thought back then the way Ian was cutting everything down he was turning it over to quad bikers...shame.

Thanks for the info guys, its a shame about that farm It sounded perfect at first I could have walked in an dout as well, but not as appealing any more gutted its only up the road from me, I was hoping to make somewhere like that my base for practising when I got spare days here and there. Any where else worth a look close-ish to me (Neath), where I could get some good practise In.

That was my intention too.
If it's just up the road then give it a go anyway. I got the impression from Ian and Ted that the horses were only there in the winter and I imagine it's a much nicer place to be when the mud isn't ankle deep.

It is 18 acres in all so maybe I would have found it better the further down the track I went. Waders would be needed though!

Into_the_wild
24-01-2012, 18:58
Yes, I will pop up there soon and have a nose, if the guy is as nice as everyone says, he should be ok with me having a good look around to see what areas are any good for me to camp in. Will I seriously need waders to have a good scout around, wellies wont do?

Horses + winter rain + mud = +++++ mud.

You go down a track to reach the river site, at the bottom of the track on the left as you reach the river is a spot that should be OK in drier months.

Turn right and there is a small spot within a few metres and a further two spots if you walk down the river; again should be OK in drier periods. The last spot at the end of the site is a little higher and subject to no more tree's been cut, be fine for tents and hammocks.

I have a reasonable amount of canadian slow grown spruce (stuff they make log cabins from). They are 3mtr lengths of 34mm thick stuff and i've cut up a good few lengths.

I bought the Coleman Aviorx3. The x2 looked too small for me and some kit so thought I would supersize it (in a small way).
It's taken the weight from 2.1kg to 3kg but what the hell.

Can't wait till next week too. Should be a blast. There's will be plenty of entertainment just watching me pitch my hammock/tent/whatever!

We should try and get an updated list of who's still coming and how long they're there for.
From the original list I think there are 14 coming.

I'll be arriving on Saturday morning and staying until Sunday afternoon/evening.

As for firewood, I think we will be fine. I'll fill my boot up (estate car) and that should last for a bit depending on how many fires we end up having.
If we're struggling by Sunday morning (and peeps are staying over Sunday night) then we will just have to go-a-hunting to re-stock.

the waterfalls are amazing, fished, camped and jumped off the lot of em as a kid. Lots of interesting stuff in Ystradfelte. Theres a huge standing rock in the middle of a field on its own, about 10 ft high, and its said that king Arthur was riding across ystradfelte when a stone was bothering him in his boot. He picked it out, tossed it over his shoulder and it started growing. Load of crap...but it was interesting when the school took us there at about 7 years old.

The Bluestones have been proven to have come from Carn Meini in the Preceli Hills. There's lots of interesting bumf about a 13,12,5 pythagorean triangle connecting the site with Stonehenge but it is just that- bumf, the actual triangle lands a few miles away on a flat map but the Earth aint flat either; I've lost entire weekends on this stuff before.

There is hardly any wood around (apart from the trees) so firewood taken onto site would be a bonus. Rich brought a bag of coal the other week and that really helped so, if anyone has any coal, it may be an ide to bring that along as well. I'll be there with Jack and Alfie approx midday Saturday until the same time Sunday. It all depends if John beats me to death with the Rum again! It was'nt very muddy around the site itself the other week and, remembering the wet Winter we had should be a good thing. The river was quite full and, if anyone fancies Mole for dinner there are plenty of hills around. It's just trapping them!

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. I have my inlaws visiting for the weekend So i'll be going anyway. I would rather camp out in a blizzard than spend the weekend with the mother-in-law.

A Jock eh?
I'll be at Cardiff a week Sunday whatching our boys give your boys a kicking (typo: Nearly published that as "licking").

We're playing Ireland this Sunday and it's 3pm kick off which is an inconvenient time for me. I've contacted the Welsh and Irish team but they won't move it to fit in with our camp out. Very rude!

I'm still up for coming how many of you are going? to be honest looking at the news it's going to be -10 in that area so i will be taking my tipi and a bag of coal for the fire inside and not a poncho. I travelled around Scotland in feb 2008 some spots around ratagan and Ullapool were -17 and if I never had the tipi I'd have frozen. Even tempted to take my camper. Oh and as for a cooking pot I got a Dutch oven if you want me to bring?

Met office show positive temp's for the entire weekend. We certainly don't want you to freeze to death, but we don't want you to asphyxiate either. I'm sure you know what your doing though. I'll bring enough wood to last out so there shouldn't be any fatalities!

When you are on the road to the farm you will eventually come to a left turn that goes sharply downhill, turn down there and at the bottom there is a car parking area on the left.Walk over the bridge and go through the gate on the right (watch your step) and you're in the site.
The farmer will find you for payment.

I may be able to make the Friday night:)

It was a great time but way too short
Lovely spot so thanks to you all for the heads up on that I will be back to do some exploring
I think Rich will put up some photos of our super shelter which we slept in and no doubt his new bird !!
We actually set up our tent and tarp/hammock but like the real cowboys we are didn't sleep in them
What the photos wont show is that once the snow stopped it started to get really quite windy and sleety Rich slept like a baby after his special nightcap while I battened down the hatches
I took a walk up the hill sat afternoon but headed back when ;for the first time in my life I thought "snow goggles would be a useful bit of kit"
Brokeback Brecon lol
Rich and I are planning a canoe kayak thing on the Avon in the spring and I might be able to get us use of a riverside field for a base camp
I have some photos too which I may post when I get them sorted out but as Rich is a photographer I suspect his will be better

Well it didn't go according to plan in many ways but I agree with all the comments so far. I did manage to twist my already damaged knee so ended up in a fair amount of pain for the rest of the trip (the Disarano was entirely medicinal you see). I have a few photos I'll share shortly but it was so cold, the lens cover on my campact froze closed and every time I switched on my video camera I was greated with "Mositure detected...shutting down". I ended up with half a dozen images and no more. I didn't take my SLR's as the idea was to get away from my usual life so NO Steve, my photos won't be any better than anyone elses I'm happy to report. Time was short and I would have loved to stay another night but we did have a good laugh for the short time we were all there. I think we would have all got on well especially considering the amount of beer we had with us! We all made a few promises of getting together again soon and It would be good to see that happen. As Steve said, we're planning some canoeing trips and I'll be cycling past his front door soon on my way to cycling the Ridgeway in Wiltshire soon. Let's get another Spring meet planned soon. I had a gelert solo and so did Redandshane. Mine was underneath a tarp but steve's was right in the thick of the snow.

Mine is the new version, handlesd the cold amazingly, i was really toasty but was just uncomfortable because of the roll mat I had. Pleased with it, but I just want some more space now so im looking to get rid of mine. I dont suffer with claustrophobia but this was a little too small for me, plus im 6ft 1".

Yep that's my Solo AKA the coffin It coped fine bone dry inside but that was with just some kit in it as we slept in a shelter by the fire
If I had used it I reckon the getting in and out would have been a right faff and snow melt from my clothes and gear would have left it damp
If I had used it I would have hung the brown tarp which is the back of the shelter over it to form canopy or porch
The tent itself has been used in most conditions and copes very well especially with wind its the sheer lack of space that is the problem in wet weather
Usually requires some imaginative ways to get round
James used the newer version under a tarp the previous night

Jaymzflood
06-02-2012, 20:13
If anything tho, the older version is probably better as Ive heard gelerts are going for the cheaper option for maufacture these days so the quality build isnt as good.
