I love taking pictures of how challenged the diet has to be in woodlands ;) Your dutchy stew was a veritable delight, guys! The shot is pre- casseroling

Many hands didn't make LIGHT work as such, but definately effective for an old fashioned way of getting the job done!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/387567_2553139342234_106643869 5_2787436_535355676_n.jpg
The Long Way Though... apparently it was like rock through the heartwood. Long time dead or not, it certainly didn't want to give up its verticality easily!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/379983_2553140102253_106643869 5_2787437_1083736034_n.jpg
Karl looked pleased as punch to have issued the last death throes... if he was out on the savanna with a lion under his foot, he couldn't've looked prouder :)

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/380061_2553140942274_106643869 5_2787438_869897551_n.jpg
Postmortem on a sycamore after it was felled.... really interesting and a delight to be able to learn so much about the tree, the mechanisms of its death and its final fall

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/387865_2553142022301_106643869 5_2787439_296905346_n.jpg
The higher section of trunk was absolutely full of punk wood, we were taking it out by huge handfuls :)

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/389960_2553142942324_106643869 5_2787441_1801183228_n.jpg
Some super wood with burr inclusions on the harder section of trunk that the guys had to chop though! It was interesting to see the triple split damage that the initial damage to the tree had caused, I reckon they go down to the base of the trunk. The opportunity to be shown and described processes of identification the respect to using the wood was fabulous for uz noobs!

Much respect to you all for such an enjoyable meet from a tired and smoky Turbogirl :)

D'ya mean the inclusion thats caused the discolouration? Is there any way to suspect/ know a trunk is 'infected' (if thats the way it happens) externally?

It often happens after the wood dies (but not always)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spalting

Its a fungal infection. Not always easy to spot but the tree will probably be very sick as it affects the outer (sap bearing) layer

Great pics Sally, thanks for sharing! Work and family duties stopped me from going to this one, gutted! On the plus side I survived a group of 14 twelve year olds using knives and cooking on an open fire and building shelters. No Lord Of The Flies on my watch! Looks like it was a great one as always, I miss the SS meets! PM to you tonight, I've found another John Nowill and Sons knife and took some pics and have some questions for you, it's a real beast!

you got the last two the wrong way round i think mate, pete's is the one with the "dancam" smock hanging over the end of the hammock and karl's is the the one with the red groundsheet.

just been looking through these photo's again (i just had a quick glance earlier) and just thought i'd point out my favourite, 5th one up, that shows how it really was. all the big lads and the young lads stood watching whilst the skinny bloke in the background's doing all the hard work goodjob

And of course the female contingent is doing nothing more strenuous than operating a shutter, Stu :)

Looking forward to seeing your knife pix, best get the new keyboard ready as I'm bound to wreck ANOTHER one drooling into it, sasquatch ;) Well done for surviving the weekend under such trying straits!

Spud, gotcha stool, matey, it had run n hid under the passenger seat... I got the set ups wrong too, dinnae feel badly!

Red, thats a fascinating piece, I didn't realise it was a generic name for that kinda inclusion... I've been going through the woodpile inspecting every old bit I got and shrieking at poor HWMBO 'arggghhhhh! DON'T BURN THAT PERFECTLY GOOD LOG!'- he thinks you've all turned me into a reet tree hugging hippy ;)

Love your war face, pete, as long as its not aimed at me... I bet the tree split with nerves in the face of that determination!

I have to go on Urban Dictionary now, no doubt I'll be traumatised for the rest of the night.... XD

He was in and out a fair bit but maybe theres other pictures to come... turning up on saturday meant my shutter missed a lot of the action but he was deep in conversation at the fire all night. He did leave a distinct calling card on the tree pictures, proof that 'Alex Woz Ere' ;)

why do you want to be banned from here Turbogirl ( as you posted on BCL ) thought you were enjoying it on here ?

as karl said, sally's got no intention of being banned from either place, she's just fully aware of the fact that her mouth sometimes works a tad quicker than her mind and can have a tendency to get her into a little bit of trouble (for example, sally's idea of an innocent comment on the other channel led you to ask why she wants to be banned on here). she's a lovely girl really :)

...the fact that her mouth sometimes works a tad quicker than her mind and can have a tendency to get her into a little bit of trouble....

Ohhhh nooooo! I was hoping to be a woodly woman of mystique who people would struggle to understand and theres stu sussing me after a first meeting!!

I am getting on well here but yes, I do make- and have made already- inappropriate comments which I don't realise until a mod has to point them out. When that happens I feel awful about it, especially if it might have hurt someones feelings/ offended and I was worried that having found some bushbuddies, I'd loose that and have to go back to solitary woodland wanderings.

More than anything, I was playing with the smilies as I (uniquely, for me!) couldn't think of what to say in an introduction :) And yes, Karls pretty well hit the nail on the head there for my reasoning too!

Well, dunno if this will work, first attempt at uploading video :)....

If anyone can enlighten me as to how to get the vid to actually play off the comment, I'd be really grateful ;)

Don’t worry about it Sally. Seems to me you are a really nice person without any intention to upset anyone.

Problem is that forums - like emails – are a one way form of communication in that you don’t get instant feedback and people can’t pick up on tone of voice, facial expressions etc. This is how misunderstanding can arise as something like 70% or more of communication is said to be non-verbal ie not based solely on the words used. Just think how many meanings you can get into the word ‘Good’ just by saying it in a different tone/with different gestures.

I remember being on a course ages ago and we did this exercise.

One person was behind a screen and had to tell everyone else how to draw a picture, composed of adjacent geometrical shapes. We couldn’t see him and he couldn’t see us and we weren’t allowed to ask any questions or give any form of feedback eg loud sighs of exasperation. (This was the ‘one way communication’ bit)

We then repeated the exercise but the instructor faced the rest of us and we could ask as many questions as we liked. There was a lot of questioning of the instructor’s lack of clarity along the lines of ‘Well if you meant THAT why didn’t you just say so?’ And questions about his birthright/intelligence level etc. (This was the two way communication part.)

The result?

One way communication was quick and quiet but gave poor results. - like some e-mail/forum discussions when somebody starts to get upset because someone has said something in a way that was open to different interpretations.

Two way took longer, was a lot more noisy but gave much better results (as measured by accuracy of the audience's drawings)

TurboGirl
12-12-2011, 17:40
And the loudest audience members scored the worst feedback for heckling, no doubt :) Thanks for your kind words- My fault for ambiguous comments dual forum :)

Chris/ Elines, are you going to North Wood? I've been looking at your tarpology thread and playing with bits of A4 paper, hubby thinks I've gone mental (again!!!)... Unfortunately the fabric won't come in time so I've bought a cheap n nasty a similar size from Machine Mart to play with in what promises to be a spectacularly windy weekend ;) depending on where you are (i.e at the wood or in a direct path downwind within 20odd miles) you may see me reverse parachuting past you ;)

BTW, someone explained your forum name to me at SS, gosh, made me giggle.... how clever!

Yep, soz the video is 14 seconds of falling, he'd leaped outta shot with the first crack, all SA seem to be sprightly wee beasties ;)

Sorry - can't get a weekend pass - just come back from 5 days in Italy (without Higher Management) sharing an apartment with a young Sicilian woman (the bad news is she has a Sicilian fiance!) so I need to wait a bit before I disappear off for another weekend - I'll also be missing the next RC weekend as have double booked myself for a whiskey evening on the Saturday night

TurboGirl
12-12-2011, 21:22
I'm sure we can all empathise with the draw of the whiskey evening... frankly I'd probably prefer the Scicilians' fiance ;) I will think of you remaining calm and thinking the problems through to remind me not to become a stress bunny like at RC last time! Have a lovely weekend and hope we get you some pictures :)
